I have been reading this site for about a year and have really come to enjoy all the good inputs and ideas. This is my first post, so please bare with me!

I have an 04 LLY and tow about 7k a couple times a month (maybe more in the summer) and would like to have a little more power. I am trying to decide between the Edge/Attitude and the Edge EZ. I know the Edge/Attitude gives you more features, but the EZ sounds more suited for towing. I really doubt that I would use any of the power settings above level two, and I am really not interested in upgrading the tranny or exhaust. On the other hand, I am debating if I really need all the features that come with the Attitude. With that in mind, I had a couple of questions:

1) How much HP and TQ will the Allison handle before she begins to break? I want to keep the truck a long time, thus I don't really want to wear out the tranny prematurely.

2) Regarding EGT's, what would be the "danger zone" that I should be aware of? Don't want to melt anything.

3) I thought I read somewhere that the Edge/Attitude can be set to defuel during shifts, but the EZ does not have this option. Is it necessary to defuel and what are the benefits of doing so?

4) Finally, what kind of issues should I be aware of while running one of these products? Any success or horror stories?

Thanks in advance for any info!

1) Sorry, don't know exact figure but I'm sure someone else will.
2) 1350 seems to be the agreed apon figure. Short bursts into higher egt's don't seem to hurt much, but a long hill with a load causing a 1400 egt will definitely give you problems. Any more than that and the turbo fries.
3) I have the edge/attitude and I really like the shift defuel option. I don't know much about the EZ, but I leave the option turned on on my attitude. If it did not defuel during a locked shift the engine would try to stay the same speed, but the input shaft of the transmission would slow down. this would force slippage either in the torque converter clutch or in the clutch bands (whichever gives first) I prefer to keep slippage to a minimum. SLippage=heat=premature wear.
4) Anytime you add power I would suggest you monitor your boost and egt. nothing worse than not preventing serious damage by letting off the pedal because you aren't even aware of a problem. I love my j/a. Best upgrade i have gottten. I have heard of oothers with problems, but I am yet to have one (knock on wood). I run levels 1 and 2 95% of the time, run 3 rarely, and almost never use 4/5. ggod luck.

1) The Allison typically does not "break" it just begins to hold less and less power as you go past it's limits.

2) The old rule of thumb used to be 1250°f pre-turbo. This has increased with time, and many use 1350°f even 1400°f sustained as a max. Many completely stock trucks will see 1400°f+

3) The EZ has the shift defuel function, just not the selectivity to turn it off. It also has the same slip protection.

Essentially, the EZ is a Juice levels 1,2, and 3 without the Attitude/adjustable parameter capabilities, and with manual levelselection. The EZ still has plenty of power to approach the Allison's holding capabilities.

Heard EZ is a great product.....

does it smoke much while towing?

Have the EZ almost a month now no smoke unless you stomp on it. Hav'nt towed with it yet but any time you run more fuel into the system your going to get a little more smoke than normal. Ran the predator before the EZ but wanted the tranny protection.Good luck and welcome to the forum!:ro)

Almost forgot, no problems yet with EZ, very good product!

The EZ has tranny protection.Page 12 in the EZ manual tells you this.

I stand corrected. So much for listening to the local salesman.

What is the price difference between the EZ and Attitude?

Why don't you try John's site? The price should be pretty close. However, the service and knowledge is 100% better.

I have the EZ and it is easy to install and my truck runs better, didn't think that was possible. I pulled a 13,000 # trailer in the city on level 1 and there was no big difference over stock that I could see/feel. Mileage is up! At least 2MPG on level 2, no level 3 until I install EGT

first post for me.a while back someone asked if anyone installed the EZ without any other mods.I did about 3 weeks ago while in Rapid City SD.I have the 2001 D/A with 76k miles at this time.no troubles so far.I tow a 15k 5th wheel everywhere.i run right at max GCVWR 22k +/- .after installing the EZ I took truck on easy trip thru the blakc hills.first 200 miles got 22.3 mpg.was suprised at extra power.very much faster than stock.i thought i had power before.hooked up and headed east for michigan.havent been in big mountains yet, will be next fall.what hills there was we ran up with ease and it doesnt downshift as often and also upshifts sooner than before.(always in towhaul)milage was 9.7 to 11(with tail wind) mpg.the only thing that happened was when going uphill and it drpooed into 4th RPMs jumped to 2500 (from 1800)and the SES light comes on until it shifts back up to 5th.stays on for about 30 seconds in 5th then goes back out.????I tow in level 1 and drive empty in 3.2 is for light towing and i dont do that.will spend about 3 months in michigan and will repost results then.also when i get back out west in the mountains will post results of heavy towing there.no trouble with injectors yet.:)thanks for listening. also boost is running slightly higher and egt is about the same. jeff cull

Thanks for all of the replies and info. After much debate, I think I'll go with the Edge/Attitude combo. I really like all the features, especially the ability to set the EGT's. I probably will only use levels 1 and 2 when towing. My next question is, do I need to upgrade the exhaust to accomodate the EGT's for these levels or will the stock exhaust do ok?

Decisions...decisions....

Sounds like the EZ has worked well for a couple people. If I just went with the EZ and kept it set on levels 1 or 2, would i still need to install and EGT gage? Running on those levels with a load, would the temps get high enough to do any damage?

I would like to know the answer to this question too, as I am considering the EZ... Bump to the top. Anyone?

As I understand it, in levels 1 & 2 an exhaust system is desireable but not necessary. Kennedy 's dyno tests show the lower EGT's. http://www.kennedydiesel.com/ , then Gallery, then dyno. An exhaust system also means you can get more power before reaching your EGT limit.

IMO, you don't NEED to have an EGT gauge, but how else are you going to know if you're overtemping the turbo?? I find the EGT limiting feature of Attitude an valuable feature when towing in the mountains.

i have an EZ on my LB7 and a buddy on a LLY. Had it for about three months and love the power it produces. I mostly use 1 only two if I'm towing my car hauler ( 9000 lbs loaded ) With the stock exhaust and no cat the EGT temps rarely went above 1050 pulling a hill. Usually see about 1000 degrees and 23psi when pulling a long grade.

my 2 cents, great product safe and not as temping as having the j/a

I too did not go with a new exhaust system and only wanted a modest increase in power but decided on the Edge/Attitude strictly for the monitoring and limiting features. I really think it's important to know where you stand on EGT's. Going with the EZ and then adding guages and mounts...... well cost difference wasn't all that bad. Now that I have it I love it. Good luck!!:grd:

My opinion is that IF you tow you need an EGT guage even running stock power levels. My LB7 is stock and I can put the thing into the yellow (1100-1200F pre turbo) running unloaded getting onto the freeway. Pulling my 20ft enclosed trailer can put it into the red (1300F+ going up a grade if I keep it to the floor. So putting a power adder on (even juiced level 1 or 2) will just get you into the yellow/red that much easier.

Again this is MY OPINION, your mileage may vary. I'm a quad A, :o: so I have to know what my truck is doing when I'm towing with it.
