: size matters
dillinghamandcheese 07-09-2009, 11:55 PM right now im running 305-75-16 tires with a four inch lift. i hate the way this looks and i am going to crank the t bars up about 1.5-2 inches and get 3.5or 4 inch blocks for the back. i would like to know what size tire i could run that would look big enough for this. i have a really long truck so i think that that makes everything look smaller. would 35s look like my 305s when i rais the truck some more. also i would like to keep the tires in the wheel well as much as possible. the ones i have now stick out alot and i hate the way that it looks. thank you for you input. Ryan
LMM_Guy 07-10-2009, 09:59 AM 315/70/17's (34.5 x12.4) have been fit without ANY lift at all other than leveling the truck. The key of course is getting wheels with the proper offset to keep them tucked under the truck. When they get spaced out enough to stick out of the fender, you'll start having interference problems when you turn the wheel.
Lets back up a step, what wheels are you running? Wheel size and offset will determine what size tire you can run more so than the amount of lift.

:exactly:
I've been running 315's on the past few trucks with no aftermarket lift and running wheels with factory offsets and haven't had issues. Check garage for pics.
dillinghamandcheese 07-10-2009, 12:03 PM is there a stamp on my wheels that will tell the offset. this is great info, thank you. i will check the off set. also if i got new wheels what should i look for as far as the offset so that the tires wouldnt stick out that much.
LMM_Guy 07-10-2009, 04:03 PM H2 wheels are pretty much the benchmark as far as fitment goes. They are 8.5" wide with +18mm of offset.
For a primer on wheel offset take a look at this link: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=101
You need positive offset wheels, not negative. Just looking at your single picture of your truck in your garage I can tell you have negative offset.
dillinghamandcheese 07-10-2009, 06:06 PM thank you again. i wanted to go with the h2 wheels just for the price i could get some for. so that makes me happy about that. any idea what size tire i could go with if i raise the truck about two more inches with the H2 wheels. thanks again.
LMM_Guy 07-10-2009, 11:56 PM In my personal opinion I wouldn't crank the torsion bars for tire clearance. For two reasons:
First the clearance you gain will only come in effect at resting ride height. Try to take your truck off road or even enter a steep drive and the tires will be rubbing. You only change your resting ride height not where your tires are able to go.
Second, the increased CV angle and increased angle on your tie rods is just not worth it. You'll wear stuff out twice a quick, and you may end up with vibrations at high speeds while in 4x4.
The good news is that you can easily clear 315/70/17's (34.5" x 12.4") you could clear a full 35x12.50 pretty easily. You may need to do some triming on the front valence and tie back the inner liner at the back of the wheel well. If you get real serious on the trimming you may even be able to go bigger than a 35" tire.
marksrt43 07-11-2009, 01:21 AM when I tried to just crank the torsion bars the ride was really bad, since there was not much more upward travel left, so I went with a lift kit with 35's instead....
sledog 07-11-2009, 02:48 AM My 05' CC D/A SWB would have never been able to run 315's without serious mods to the fender. But my 06' and current 08' have no problems. Maybe it was a 05' thing...
dillinghamandcheese 07-11-2009, 07:47 AM right now my tbars are almost at a negitive angle. so i dont think that cranking them up some will be that bad. also im not trying to get the absolute biggest tires i can wedge in there, just wondering if something bigger then a 35 would easily fit. like maybe a 325 or something.
marksrt43 07-11-2009, 12:22 PM it would hit if you turned sharper, especially if hitting bump at same time as turning...
LMM_Guy 07-11-2009, 04:38 PM Dilling,
A 325/70/17 is basically a 35x12.7 so it would most likely clear with some trimming. I'm not exactly sure what you are refering to when you say your torsion bars are at a negative angle. I'm talking about the axle shafts being above level by very much causes problems. Again I don't think gaining clearance by adjusting your resting ride height is a good idea unless you just want to tool around the walfart parking lot.
Check out this thread I posted about clearing 285's on a LMM, it will illustrate what needs to be modified on the inner fender to clear bigger tires. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304610

If i may, Dillingham already has a 4'' lift, but wants to be at 6'', so instead of buying a 6'' he wants to crank his bars to achieve basically 6'' of lift.:)
LMM_Guy 07-11-2009, 09:54 PM I hear what your saying Tim, but I guess the point I'm trying to make is that a 4" lift with the torsion bars adjusted to achieve 6" of lift is not the same thing as a 6" lift nor will it achieve the same kind of tire clearance. If you look at the maximum up travel limit of each lift the 6" lift will keep the tires 2" further away from the fender.....this is what you need to clear bigger tires under moderate driving conditions.
If your goal is to clear the bigger tires while tooling around town and plan on keeping the wheel strait while off roading then adjusting the torsion bars to clear the tires is an option.

Yep, I totally agree with you, I dont reccomend cranking the bars to get lift, but if your trying to save cash i understand.;)
But you end up suffering from poor ride and faster wear out of parts.
Im not a fan of lifts that require cranking to acheive lift( Like a rancho 4'' i see sold as a 6'' kit) . Flat CV's are the name of the game.
dillinghamandcheese 07-12-2009, 08:30 AM when i called trailmaster i asked them what parts where diffrent between the 4 inch and 6 inch lift. the only diffrence that he said was bigger blocks in the back. so if figure that people who have been running there "6" lift have the same stuff as me. i dont want to go the full six inches. i was going to raise the front either 1 or 1.5 inchese and replace the rear block that is 2 inches now with one that is 3.5 inches. im not that concerned with ride quality its a pick up. im writing this because with the 305s on my truck with the lift looks so ridiculous. so i would like to know what size tire you all think that i could use that wouldnt look so stupid. again im not going to try and cram the biggest one in there, just want something that looks good. thank you again.

Might as well try it, cant hurt and will prob give you the look you want.
Be sure to post pics!
dillinghamandcheese 07-12-2009, 10:27 AM i am going to try it and as far as pics go, it will probably be a while. i need to save some $$$$ for tires and wheels. thanks again for the input. so i guess i will try to find someone close by with 35s so i can bolt them on and see what they look like. that was the problem when i first got the lift. i had no idea how the tires would fit, and what they would look like. i guess i learned from my mistakes.

WEe understand, this is why ive asked around and looked for months before i bought my lift.
Its tough to make a decision!
