: Confused about EGT when towing Fiver compared to TT
BassinRVer 05-09-2005, 03:11 PM I just bought a 1998 34-5Y Wilderness, 36' footer, triple slide fiver. It weights 10,500 LBS dry so it should be around 12,000 loaded. I used to have a 2002 bumper pull Wildcat 30BHSS that weighted 7600 LBS dry so about 9000 LBS loaded. So the difference is about 3000 LBS. Pulling with the old bumper pull, I would hit 1200 degrees easy going up some hills and then it would down shift into fourth and the EGT would lower a bit. Pulled the fiver this weekend to go camping and I would barely hit mid 800's. On the hills that it would down shift, the temps were about 850 and it would downshift. I do not understand this at all. The fiver pulls 10X better than the bumber pull. Fiver's are suppost to pull better than bumper pull's do, but this does not explain the difference in EGT to me.
I have gone this same route camping over a hundred times. I have been fishing this lake since 1993. I take the same route everytime so I familar with certain hills. There is one hill that I always take at 55 MPH and it is one that always makes the EGT rise fast with the old bumper pull. This same hill I only hit about 870 or so.
I have thought that maybe my J/A probe may be bad. I just remembered that a have a brand new never used probe at home. I will replace it before the next trip to see if the old probe is bad.

my hunch is you have pretty well nailed the problem ... all else being equal, there is no way the EGT's should drop when you add that much weight (not to mention wind resistance from the higher profile of a 5er)

Max Power 05-09-2005, 03:42 PM That is a big drop for sure but it wouldn't surprise me if the wind drag is a bit less on the 5er over the TT due to the 5er being closer to the truck. Not 300-400 degrees in EGT's less though.
wwpiga 05-09-2005, 03:55 PM How was you MPG. Temp is a function of fuel burned. If you got better MPG that you should get lower EGT. If you used the same amount of fuel then you have a problem with the probe.
Max Power 05-09-2005, 03:59 PM Maybe someone slipped a big turbo under the hood since the last time you towed. :D

Maybe Eric gave me a visit.
Seriously though, does anyone have experience towing a trailer trailer compared to a fiver?
I towed a 25 foot Prowler for a year and the truck never knew it was back there. I now tow a 38 foot 5ver toyhauler and it took some getting used to. The bumper dragger would follow behind and make every turn the same as the truck. The 5ver does not turn as good and you have to make sure of heights on bridges and such as my 5ver sits 13 feet high. The 5ver is more stable when towing on interstates then the TT. You also have to judge stopping distances a bit differently. I didn't have guages with the TT but with my 5ver I get upward of 1000 degrees post turbo when pulling hills and usually around 700-800 when running on the flat. 5ver weighs 15K when loaded.
CMDMAX 05-09-2005, 05:28 PM Check the depth of the probe in the manifold. Mine worked it's way out and came out completely. As it did the temps lowered slowly till it finally came out. I have the old J/A probe.

I'll check that too.
LanduytG 05-10-2005, 08:26 AM I pull a 26ft Carri Lite 5th wheel and my GCVW is about 15K. I can asure you that something is wrong with the EGT prob or guage. I can hit 1300* on big pull very easy. Also my trailer is only 12 feet high so I don't have the resistance you do. The fact that you a pulling 3K pounds more and have a lot of extra wind resistance is not going to produce less EGT.
Greg
I tow a 36 foot Carriage and it weighs 15000 lbs. I get the same temps as you, 850-1000 towing in the 90 hp setting. Your numbers are about right. When it downshifts to fourth I can't get it to go higher than 1100, usually cruises at 800-900 at 65 in OD.
MaxRock 05-10-2005, 11:49 AM I've got a question for you BRV...how in the world did you get a 5er to hitch to that tall truck of yours? Are you able to get the 5er to sit level?
Good luck with the new toy and I hope you get the EGT gremlin figured out.

rightstuff 05-10-2005, 09:48 PM 1822 (& bassin) -- I seriously suggest looking at your EGT gauge and /or probe. I tow a 15k 5th wheel over the passes of the Sierras and Rockies and noticed my EGT readings were gettting lower and lower. Initally I was getting 1300 degrees foot to the floor with the Juice in Level 2. When that started dropping I called Edge who said the early style probes sometimes would slide out of the bushing and read low. Sure enough, when I replaced it with the later type probe, the readings came back up to 1300.
I don't know if your probe/gauge is funny, but it's worth checking out.
BassinRVer 05-11-2005, 11:12 AM It was the probe!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This morning I started to hear an exhaust leak and when I got home the probe was all the way out.
MaxRock,
The rear of my truck has three inch blocks. My fiver is only off kilter alittle. The fiver has bigger tires from the previous owner.
Brad97 05-12-2005, 04:25 PM I'm wondering if your temp. probe is installed in the passenger ex. man. as mine is. I pull a 37' triumph that is about the same weight. When the engine was dead stock I was reaching temps as high as 1400 wound up in third on a steep hill. After upgrading the intake and exhaust the temp dropped down to 1250. Something under a 1000 on a steep hill sounds a little fishy to me. I'd re-check everything to make sure nothing has moved.
Cheers,
Brad
