: A-pillar and other gauges illegal?

My son went through Delaware inspection last week with his truck. He was informed that his A-pillar gauges (normal aftermarket stuff) and the two or three gauges on top of the dash (previous owner install with the backs exposed) are illegal and that DE cops might ticket him. Something about federal regs. The truck was passed.

Anyone hear this BS before or get hassled by cops fot it?

I know this is not a strictly 6.5TD subject, but could not figure out where to stick this as a generic query.

I moved this into Interior to hopefully get some more coverage.

As for the question at hand, if that were so? I am sure there would be a whole lot of pissed off car and truck owners! As I understand, anything mounted on the dash and A-pillar must not obstruct the drivers view. I am unsure of your state, but Fed reg.s do not restrict the use of gauges. Maybe they were confused, but in some states they are making drivers take GPS units off the dash. I am sure Garmin loved that new law! :p:

The obstruction of view is a joke.

The A-pillar gauges block view of the A-pillar and the-A pillar only and the top of dash mounted gauges block the view of the top of the dash. So unless I were a midget at eye level with the top of dash I don't lose seeing anything.

Just another potentially useful regulation enforced by people who make too much money being totally unnecessary pain in the ass to others.

The 2-3 gauges on top of the dash, I can see as a big no no . . .

But the A-Piller? . . . HA! My little HHR SS came with a pillar pod and boost gauge stock! . . .

Why? No one's view is obstructed.

chevy's pillier design obstructs my view regardless. I bet thats why the never installed a handle there to clime in and out of the truck. Instead use your steering wheel, and if your over 250lbs your steering wheel will be bent in a matter of years.

I think that depends on how high the hind quarters reach when stepping in, i.e. your height. I am 6'2" 300 lbs (big bones) and my steering wheel is quite safe despite the height of the truck.

My 5'9" so unit has been demanding steps for a number of years, but not on my truck!

It is an obstruction to your forward view, maybe not to you but it is. But that is just an opinion.

I've never heard of this problem before, but I'm willing to bet I'm going to get hassled with my 8" power dome hood :D along with my ten additional gauges.

I'd like to see someone pull up the Delaware laws on stuff like this... a bug deflector obstructs your view more.

Well, I know this much - a custom hood cannot be over four inches higher than stock in DE. Saw that on the vehicle inspection section of the DE DMV website.

I just moved to DE, so I am still getting used to it. The truck in question passed NJ inspection last year without any comments.
