: Drain water?

Hey yall, I have a 2000 6.5L. This is my first diesel truck and I use it for work. Anyway I just started using the PowerService Diesel-Kleen with cetane boost because of advise I got here about the ULSD. This is the second tank of fuel and the Water in Fuel light has been commin on a lot lately. With the truck running I opened the t-handle drain near the t-stat housing to drain the water form the filter and only an ounce or two of water came out and then stopped. Thats all I ever get from it, I'm thinking maybe change the filter and look for a plugged drain. BUT this got me wondering...shouldnt that drain hose continue dumping water then fuel until the drain is closed? Is my Lift Pump failing?

It should only be a little of water mix with fuel. Only that much can kill your engine. May want to change out the filter.

If you don't have anything coming out, then LP is failing. May be the water kills the LP also.

You likely have water in your fuel tank. Might be worth driving until it's low and syphoning out the contents into a transparent container and let sit to separate to see how much water you had.

If you don't have anythiing coming out of the t-handle drain hose, it might also mean that the bottom of the filter and/or the hose leading from the filter to the t-handle valve is plugged. This hose is easy to change without taking anything (like the intake manifold) apart.

I changed the fuel filter today and cleaned out the bowl it was really nasty. I cleared the plugged drain line too. Good news is LP is good! :) Truck even sounds and starts better.

I just got this truck a couple months ago. guess I should prolly change the GP's before it gets cold out.

Changing the glows wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd go with Bosch Duraterm's but i'm a bit biased after seeing how well they work. :D

Also when changing them a little bit of anti-seize on the threads of the new GPs will help if you've ever got to pull the out again.

Yes, I just bought the Duraterms and wow!...80$ worth of plugs, wasnt ready for that one... and I got some copper anti-seize too. I'm wondering how much crap is in my tanks after seeing that fuel filter tho, The rear transfer tank fuel pump was replaced just before I got the truck.

I just went through the same thing last fall. Thought I'd have crud in the tank so I dropped it as I had to replace the sender too. It was clean as a whistle.

I figure I will run a couple tanks thru this new filter and change it again before I consider dropping a tank. I'll wait and see what it looks like.

i'd drain some fuel from the water drain into a clear container if you haven't and let it sit for a tad to see if water does ineed settle out to the bottom. Any water at all is bad.

If there is indeed water in your fuel your IP won't last long. The IP is lubricated by the fuel.

water = not a lubricant

Water can also can cause rust inside the IP.(ask me how i know. :()

Well...I am happy to report the fuel sample I took using my acquired sacrificial mason jar has been sitting here since 4:30 ish (approx 4 hrs now) and shows absolutely no signs of water :D as for the jar Ill take the heat
