Hello everybody, I have a 1984 cucv army truck and the rear end is leaking. The leak is coming from the seal were the axle tube meets the pumkin. My??? is can I take the axle tube off and replace a seal or can I take the diff cover off and get to the seal that way.If any body can help that would be great.

I don't believe there is a seal at that location. I'm not familiar with the CUCVs in particular but if the axle is like a regular GM corporate 14 bolt the axle tubes are pressed into the center section and plug welded in place. If the axle is leaking at that joint I would suspect that the axle may be bent. I have seen some off-roaders run a weld bead all the way around the axle tube where it meets the center section but that is generally frowned on by axle builders since it would likely distort the axle. If the axle is already bent though you really don't have anything to lose. You might also just try to clean up the area real good with a wire brush or sandpaper and run a bead of silicone sealer around the joint.

Hey, thank you very much, I realized that I posted this in the wrong forum and tried to erase it and move it.My diff cover has a huge dent from some one backing in to something I don't believe there is a seal at that location. Check vent first, clogged vent can push lube out of the weirdest places. MJB has the best answers for this, there is no seal at that place, press fit with plug welds. If you're worried about dent in cover then pop it off and check for ring gear rubbing on it,if it is then use a hammer to knock dent out, reseal with RTV (black preferably) if no gasket is available

I have "Peen Weld (cold weld)" different Tube leaks in the past. Very tedious.
