: Nicktane Questions
JhnZ71 05-09-2005, 02:04 PM Im about ready to change the first filer on my Nicktane kit, would the AMSOIL/HASTINGS equivalent of the CAT filter be okay? Where can you get the cat filters online cheap? Also, any tips on how to change them, I dont wanna have to bleed everything again that was a B*&^h to do.
Diesel Dually 05-09-2005, 03:16 PM I have not changed mine yet, but I would think that putting a little diesel in the filter wont hurt, and I am not certain about the filter change, but if it is the equivalent...there should not be a problem.

understood ;) I got tired of having to use the OEM fuel filter pump to bleed the lines on mine and installed one of John Kennedy's lift pumps ... now all it takes is to push a button for a few seconds

Bill Gisse 05-09-2005, 06:23 PM Fill the hew filters before putting them on, saves a lot of priming. Don't see why any filter identified as a sub wouldn't work, just be sure its a 2 micron. Any reason you don't want to stay with the CAT brand, they are excellent filters.
JhnZ71 05-09-2005, 10:47 PM no, i just usually order everything from amsoil. where can i get those filters online?
g.corral 05-10-2005, 01:00 AM Jhnz71-if you live in long beach,ca.. i got a place... i changed mine(cat0749) with 10,000 miles,very dirty!!!!
BigdaddyG 05-10-2005, 01:45 AM I pick mine up at a local CAT dealer for $17.00 each. Just buy a couple extra and you'll be set for a while.
Diesel Power 05-10-2005, 02:00 AM you won't have to prime it if you pre-fill it. just make sure you fill it all the way up. if its used post oem i wouldn't pre-fill it but if you run it the way the kit does you can pre-fill it as you still have the OEM filter after it. i don't know of anyone else who sells cat filters online besides me, but you could probably do a google search for 1r-0749 and come up with something. local cat dealers are usually 17-20 and they are everywhere.
Bigwheel 05-11-2005, 10:19 PM Question,
Other than Kennedy's lift pump set-up, are there any other's out there, I have not seen any of them, I have all the parts to install the Cat filter with the 1R-750 filter, but I want this filter post oem, maybe nick could describe to me the difference if this is set-up pre-oem vs post oem, I'm using the new updated revised oem dual pleat fuel filter, and with that having dual filtering, would'nt it be better to have the cat post oem?? Thanks for the info! :thankyou2
hotrent1 05-11-2005, 10:46 PM kennedys is the best for the money, post oem might have warranty issues, install it how it was designed and add kennedys pump post cat and pre oem. makes a clean professional install. IMHO
Diesel Power 05-12-2005, 02:47 AM bigwheel,
there are several lift pump setups out there. some poeple use a standayne fm100. some use a 6.5L lift pump. some use a carter. some use the small hot water home recirculating ones. some use a holley blue, black, or red. some use aeromotive a1000's. there are lots of choices
super diesel currently offers a nice lift-pump setup. i've tested it with my kit and it works fine. however unless you're trying to make a ton of horsepower any lift pump rated for diesel will work fine. if you keep your truck i'd get the 6.5L lift pump as its cheap, not too loud and will keep you from having any air issues should you use a post-oem setup located inside the PS front fenderwell.
Bigwheel 05-12-2005, 09:32 PM Sounds good, what about the statement about warranty issues if I install the cat filter post oem vs installing it pre oem?? I understand your kit is pre-oem, but I was not sure. I would like to think with the newly designed dual pleat oem fuel filter, it would be just common sence to have the cat filter after the engine fuel filter, but I'm sure it get's into preference or opinions. Lastly what micron rating is the 1R-749 & 1R-750?? Thanks !!
Diesel Power 05-13-2005, 03:36 AM yes my kit is pre-oem. if i were designing the fuel system, yes a more coarse filter could go first. however it sure doesn't hurt anything to have the big cat filter first. after all, its cheaper than the OEM filter, so if you look at it from a $$ standpoint you can run 40k+ on your oem filter and 15-20k on the cat. its also VERY easy to service in the pre-oem location. put one knee on the ground, grab the filter with your right hand (with a wrench if you need it) and spin it off. no panels to remove, etc.
i mentioned the post oem as some people have made their own setups using a cat that go post oem. the 0749 and 0750 have the same micron rating- 2.

Bigwheel 05-16-2005, 02:34 AM Yea, I figured it was a-lot cheaper to buy more of the cat filters and ease of removal, very true point, thanks for the advice!.
