I have just replace the glow plugs the 2nd time in the last couple of months. When I took it into the mechanic he claims I burned them out.It is a maual switch there is no light to indicate when plugs have cycled.I press button to provide power to plugs then turn it over.I knew i was having a problem after 6-7x times.i thought it may have been the relay but this is ok.They mechanics states that I was holding button in to long.I was holding it in for 10 sec max.He states that 3-5sec should do it.I think the only way to solve this is to plug block heater in and start this way .I live in NY what is going be like in Winter when truck has to go to work plowing snow. The primary reason I bought it for.I have put a cra...p load of money in this truck and i am thinking I am wasting money, time and energy that could all be put somewhere more constructive.I am not even done repairing it.Any ideas with this problems thought on truck itself.Just about every mechanic said dump it the 6.2 is junk.DAVE

6.2's not junk.
It, like the 6.5, just needs a mechanic that understands it and how it functions and its limits. Sounds like your mechanic understands none of the above.
Get a set of Bosch Duraterm Glowplugs. part number 80034. These are self regulating plugs and won't burn out with longer glow times. Just make sure you've got a good relay(get a ford starter solenoid that moutns on the fender) for the glow plug control.
This will allow the push button you've got to control that relay which is turn will put power to the glow plugs when the solenoid/relay is turned on.

the 6.2 is an amazing engine, now powerhouse but reliable, and easy to work on, which i would question your mechanic if he says its junk. X2 what Iamdave0887 says with the glow plugs and the push button, as for time, 3-5 seconds isn't going to be enough, the 10 seconds you were doing is correct.

you can also try AC delco 60G glow plugs theire self limiting. as for the 6.2 IT IS FAR FROM JUNK!!! these engines are trail blazers bringing the diesel scene back from the terror of the 5.7 mistake

I've had a few 6.2's and they were all great. No power, but great trucks and engines. Don't get all revved up by what others say, just get some 60 g's or whatever and be done with it. Good luck man.

X2 to of the above.
You MUST put self-limiting plugs in Delco 60G or the Bosch plugs - 10 seconds on the pushbutton with those is enough for temps down to about 3 degrees C...when it's freesing, then 15-20 seconds on on the button is fine too.
And CHANGE YOUR MECHANIC - he sounds like a total doofus!
