: turbo question... not vac related
jeeprocks86 07-07-2009, 11:22 PM so I was figuring that my vac system was bad.
today I finally pulled the lines after seeing black smoke after I stomped on it.
I'm getting what I think is good pressure at the suction line at the Wastegate solenoid (I think that's what it is, it has 2 suction lines, one in from the pump, one out to the turbo, and it has an electrical connector to it as well).
The suction going to the turbo wastegate is a lot less.
Where I think my problem is either in the turbo WG itself. I can move the WG actuator with no vac line connected (won't move with it connected).
When the vac line is disconnected, I can move the WG actuator rod and nothing changes. Also when I move the rod, the actuator seems to squeak and pop.
My question is, since I can move the WG actuator rod and nothing changes with the sound of the engine at idle, does this mean my WG is bad?
I do not have any gauges, but I do plan on ordering a set this week.
Thanks.
Green Machine 07-08-2009, 12:11 AM At idle or revving while in park, you won't hear much of a difference in engine sound.
With everything hooked up and the truck running, can you move the wastegate actuator rod? If you can move it when the truck is running then something is not working correctly.
May also want to check This Thread (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39368) out.

Cannot "think" you have good pressure (vacuum), got to be measured with a vac gauge, 25 for new, will work with 15, but barely, and you will probably get smoke about then.

OK there.

means nothing at idle, everything seems OK, but get a vac gauge and check your vacuum at the vac pump, after the WG solenoid and at the actuator.
jeeprocks86 07-08-2009, 08:04 AM ok. What should the levels be at each spot?
briley 07-08-2009, 10:03 AM Jeeprocks, I sent you a PM and can send you the diagnostic procedure from the shop manual.

jeeprocks86 07-13-2009, 01:49 PM today I finally put a vac gauge on it.
at the turbo with everything hooked up I have 17 inHg which it is supposed to be above 15
with the electrical 2 wire plug disconnected at the WG solenoid, I'm still getting the same reading.
I'm assuming this means that the solenoid is bad?
I can get a WG solenoid for around $51 from the "Stealership"
I've found them online for about $30 and for $40 online plus shipping.
Would it be worth the extra money to get a turbomaster?
what would be the benefits of the turbomaster over the factory stuff?
what would the benefit of added boost?
RCpullerdude 07-13-2009, 01:52 PM Does the black smoke clear up as the RPM's come up, or is it very thick, black, constant, and totally gutless?
jeeprocks86 07-13-2009, 03:14 PM the black smoke is at start up and also at hard accelerations when the transmission down shifts.
jeeprocks86 07-14-2009, 10:21 AM any suggestions or ideas?
jeeprocks86 07-20-2009, 11:30 PM well today i installed a new WG solenoid.
also took the piece off of the top of the intake (sensor of some sort) and screwed in a vac gauge from harbor freight. I had boost. Under hard acceleration, it pegged out at 10psi. put the old WG solenoid back on and it still read 10 psi. also the vac gauge still reads the same as it did.
also still have black smoke with the new WG solenoid as well as the old one.
also to add insult to injury... Suburban 1 Cell Phone 0
RCpullerdude 07-20-2009, 11:43 PM I will ask again...
When you punch it, does the smoke clear up at all, or does it smoke, smoke, and smoke some more.
jeeprocks86 07-20-2009, 11:46 PM it's black and then it goes away.
still black at start up.
It doesn't bother me, i just thought the black smoke was bad and meant something was wrong especially with my 36 code.
RCpullerdude 07-20-2009, 11:48 PM There is absolutly NOTHING wrong with your turbo system, just as I had suspected. You see, these turbos have to spool up. If you punch it, you're pouring in fuel before the turbo spools, resulting in a puff of black that clears up as the turbo spools. Your 36 also has NOTHING to do with the turbo system, but rather the injection system.
DangerousDave 07-20-2009, 11:50 PM Your black smoke sounds normal for a stocker as in your sig.
Mine did the same until I made the TM. Don't do it 'til you get a gauge, you can blow it up.
Per my sig. "homegrown mods: $15 TM set to 12psi max, boost gauge,... , Cool air intake to S&B filter, Vac Pump delete, straight through exhaust,"
These all added up to ENOUGH air to match the fuel, so it all burns well = more power, less smoke.
Don't think you need a chip reflash for a '95.
jeeprocks86 07-20-2009, 11:53 PM ok what about the black smoke at start up?
jeeprocks86 07-21-2009, 12:04 AM so do you think the 36 could be the PMD?
DangerousDave 07-21-2009, 09:24 AM ok what about the black smoke at start up? so do you think the 36 could be the PMD?
1. Normal start smoke.
2. DTC 36 - Injection Pulse Width Error (Time Long)
"It is helpful to the diagnostic process to know when codes are setting, particularly if there is more than one. Hence, clearing the codes is something you may wish to do. Clearing the codes may be accomplished by simultaneously depressing the brake and accelerator pedals fully while the PCM is in diagnostic mode (terminals A and B connected). It will not appear that you have cleared the codes until the next time you power up in diagnostic mode, however. "
Green Machine 07-21-2009, 09:30 AM A puff of black smoke on a warm start is fine. No worries there, if you look at almost any other diesel you will see some black smoke come out of the exhaust... I may put up a video later today of how mine warm starts.
I had an injector code a long time ago (can't remember which one) I just cleared codes and never came back again.
jeeprocks86 07-21-2009, 01:36 PM ok well I will clear the codes after I leave school today.
so far i've gotten 36 43 and 48
36 is the impulse as stated
43 is a low fuel temp (bad glow plugs/ i'm missing one)
48 was the low intake temp (I removed the sensor for my boost gauge)
Thanks for all the help. They wouldn't let me return my part at the Stealership, so I have a spare WG solenoid/ one for sale now...
I have no problem with black smoke since it's a diesel. I just thought that this was not supposed to happen with the 6.5
now that my problems have been figured out, I need to boost some power. Hope to build an intake this weekend first. Going to take the cone air filter off of my jeep and build a new one for that. Then exhaust and some other things.
jeeprocks86 07-21-2009, 11:49 PM cleared the codes... both the 36 and 43 came back. my new pmd and cooler should be her from 8-10 days, hopefully it will get here before I leave on a trip.
