A search turned up one post that might be related but that was from 2004.

At 1000 rpms - and I mean exactly 1000 rpm's - I get a very audible squeak sound, almost like a bearing. My wife says it sounds like a bird chirping but if you have ever heard a bearing going out, it's a similar sound. I noticed it when I bought the truck and it is noticable from the outside and inside. It also sounds like it is coming from the turbo or in the general area.

As I mentioned it happens only at 1000 rpms and mostly upon deceleration. If it holds at 1000 rpms for a few seconds it will sound like a bearing going out but the second it goes 100 rpm's above or below, it stops. It will not do it at any other rpm's.

Does this happen to anyone else's truck?

idler pully would be my guess. i went through 3 or 4 of them within a month. that is if you really think its a bearing. if you think it could be a belt then try a goodyear gatorback belt they quiet ththe little squeeks and chirps these trucks make very well.

X2...it sounds like a pulley. Have you tried listening for it with the hood open and someone else bringing the RPMs up? Or, is it only when driving/load on the engine?

To distinguish the noise between the serp and a bearing, you can put a few drops of water on the belt as it is up to RPM. If the noise persists, you have a bearing - most likely an idler - in need of attention.

If you determine it's the belt by the noise ceasing or getting worse, look at the tensioner and be sure the single notch falls between the two. If it does not, your belt has stretched beyond the capacity of the tensioner and needs replacement. As mentioned, go Gatorback if it comes in your size. They eliminate a lot of chirp otherwise caused by slightly misaligned pulleys.

Unfortunately for me, they don't make the 142" that my unit takes...:(

I'll check that out.

It's not belts or pulleys as those are easy to distinguish. This is on the back of the engine from around the turbo somewhere and I can't find it. Stupid drive by wire won't let me idle up the D-Max from under the hood. It also only does it after the engine warms up. I'm not exaggerating when I say it only "chirps" or "squeaks" at 1000 rpm's on the dot. As the truck idles down you hear the turbo spool down and then "chirp" and that's it. Rev it up and let it fall back down and you will get a quick little "chirp" every time. I'm going to try and get a recording today.

Well, I have a good sound clip of the 1000 rpm chirp but apparently putfile.com is down so now I need to find another host site. *sigh*

See if this site works. I'm going through the parking lot and rev to about 1500 rpm's then let off and let it spool down. It happens 4 times and the chirp is at 1000 rpm's on the dot.

BTW, I don't know anything about "filedropper". Non of my adware, spyware or virus detectors hit on anything when I went in and downloaded the file so AFAIK it's safe. I use F-Secure and Spybot - Search and Destroy.

Stump ,

thread doesn't work but I'm real interested to hear what yours sounds like. Mine happens all the time whether crossing 1300 RPM going up or going down. I can actually drive back roads and make it do it for 10 seconds or so.

Got another clue this evening. It chirped when I shut it down and chirped when I started it. Thinking it is an idler now.

Thing that is throwing me is it is a chirp- whirring that never changes pitch with engine speed. Never heard any belt or pulley whine only at one speed and never, ever change pitch.

Try and have wife get it chirping while I'm somehow listening.

Upload your clip to youtube.

My 06 had a "chirp" and it was a pwr steering bracket issue....might want to check into that.

Upload your clip to youtube.
I'll check but it's a sound file and I don't know if youtube allows just a sound clip. Normally I host off my "Myspace" page but they do not allow sound clips either. I will try youtube tonight as I am Websensed at work and "Big Brother" does not allow me access.

My 6 month hunt for the chirp was found to be the weather strip under the hood along the window! it had a "fold" in it around the center and after cleaning & gluing it back into its clips/track its finally quiet!

Very specific RPM that it made the sound for me ~1400 RPM... now gone for 3 months and counting!

Bad design for sure.

hope it helps.

Mine is getting worse but is now happening when I shut the truck down so I'm a little bit more relieved that it is a belt or pulley issue.

I finally figured out how to get it to work and uploaded to YouTube. Nobody take's audio clips anymore.

Lot of background noise but that doesn't sound anything like mine. Does yours slightly mimick a squeeling tire? Is that what I'm hearing. Nice Guns!

The background noise is the truck for the most part but I think there were some guys working on the concrete that day as well. I'm holding the recorder up and cruising through the parking lot about 15 mph or so. I rev the truck up to 1500 rpm's and let it spool down. It happens 4 times and each squeak or chirp you hear is at exactly 1000 rpm's.
Almost sounds like a cricket.

Evryone,
First time on the site. The squeak sounds like the same thing I went through just resently. My sound could be heard at approx. 1200 RPM's. I had the truck checked at the dealer which turned up nothing. After another week of this sound I finaly found the issue on my truck. On the passenger side exhaust there is a flange connection with a cracked tack weld. If you craul under the truck on the passenger side and hit the exhaust pipe with the palm of your hand just ahead of the cat in different directions you may be able to zero in on it. I found this issue with my truck and welded the crack with a Mig Welder. Haven't heard it since. Hope this helps.

I have a 2007 Classic and it has the same cricket sound at 1300-1400 RPM's. Did anyone figure out what it is???

Yes all these are posible! I printed them so I can give them to the Chevy garage this week. I have 28k so I am still under warranty.

He said they can't find out what causes it until it will do it in park. The sound only appears under load at 1300 RPM. It will not do it in park and rev up to 1300???
Dealer said to keep driving it until it does it all the time??? What great advise!

My 2005 Duramax makes what I believe to be the same noise at exactly 1400 RPM. I've owned the truck since new and the noise started around 60,000 miles. I changed the serpentine belt with a GM replacement with absolutely no change in noise.
It's about to drive me nuts! Jack
