normally means the encoder is acting up(real common on 03's). Mine has been doing the same thing for the last 6,000 miles or so and other than a nuisance it doesn't seem to be causing any ill effects. However, a quick scan at the dealership is needed to properly diagnose, most handheld scanners do not have the capability to read the codes stored for it.

Anyone know what an off warranty encoder install would cost ...part/labour?

Thanks,
Paul

Early-on I used to get the "Service 4X4" and some "ABS" messages. I have not had one in over a year now.

I only have ~18K miles on the truck now and it's an '03; town is only three miles away. My point is that the Batteries do not have a chance to "Charge Back Up".

The OEM batteries are dismal at Best; then we put High Current pre start duties on them, (Glow Plug and Intake Heater), then the Starter Load. Over time it is a disaster waiting to happen.

I have done Three things I believe have helped me.

First: Installed Optima Yellow Top deep cycle batteries. More appropriate for the application and more CCA.

Second: I wait for the Odometer to be displayed in the DIC. All the on-board computers have completed their Hand Shake's and are on the Same Page.

Third: I charge my batteries two or three time per year, depending on miles driven.

(Ol' rule of thumb, non diesel environment; you have to drive ten miles to re-charge the battery for Each start event. It will be Much more for our trucks.)

'Bout thirty cents worth (corrected for inflation). Worked for me.

yeah, after spending a week in Canada kissing some customer Censored I just haven't found a time to reschedule a trip down to see you. That and the fact it's been two wheeler season(so I probably won't need my 4x4 soon).

You guys have saturday hours???

Has anyone traced this encoder sensor fault to actual damage to any component if it's ignored? Or is it just another sensor to ignore untill you get around to replacing?

Mines been doing it for around 7500 miles or so and the 4x4 still works when I engage it so I'm thinking it's a no damage thing. However, I have heard reports of peoples trucks locking into 4x4 or 4x4 lo cruising down the road which could be a frightening experience. This has not happened to me though.
