Just wanted to see how many of us have dual citizenship by vehicle. I'm on my third TDI waiting for the new Jetta TDI I ordered to arrive. Currently have a 2005 Jetta Wagon GLS TDI.

2005 Beetle/TDI/5 speed.........loaded GLS with XM, Zenon's etc.

So far I am avg's 39-42 mpg and it has only 3700 miles........once it hits 10K miles it chould loosen up and go into the 45+ mpg range.

Great car, the wife loves it..........;)

2002 Golf TDI 5 speed w/ 50 K miles. Great power train, handling, suspension, seats & mileage - averages around 45 MPG. Runs happily on biodiesel:ro) . Great little cruiser. I have one beef: the electronics are really annoying. Lots of CELs / trips to the dealer, radio conks out intermittently, car seems too computerized for me. But it is a great commuting and road trip car.

The TDI Club web site is very helpful: www.tdiclub.com/ (http://www.tdiclub.com/)

We had a 2003 Beetle TDI after the first Jetta, never did get the mileage of the Jetta's. Must be the shape. My wife is the primary driver and she loves them too. Good Beetle and previous truck were combined to become my GMC.

02 Jetta with 38k on it.......5 speed with bigger injectors, waiting for even bigger injectors/turbo or a light tune.......

Averages 48-9 mpg.

I like it.

Wife had an 02 Jetta TDI ...commuted 100 miles/day up until 110,000 ...sold and bought a new 2004 NB PD TDI. It hasn't proven to be the car the the 02 was ...just had a brand new motor installed at 27K :( as it was using over 1 quart/oil every 500 miles. Ironically this started at 20K miles after 2 glow plugs (#1 & #3) were replaced. My theory is the tech overtighted a glow plug, cracked it and the pieces munched the head and cylinder wall. #3 cylinder was scored beyond repair. It took 2 months and the car on an oil monitoring program before VW would do anything about it. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing the rest of the way. Still have a bad taste in my mouth from the latest go around with VW over the motor replacement and quality of service.

Here's her lemon (no pun intended) :)

I have a 99 "new" Jetta, white 5spd, 91,000 mi, straight piped, Rocketchip euro stage 3 chip, Awe Tuning boost gauge and colunm pod, boostvalve set at 22lbs and I will be adding some Kerma pp520 injectors soon. I commute 60 mi one way to work M-Fri and sometime Sat. I average anywhere between 47-53 depending on how I drive it. I do do alot of city driving too.

THE GOOD: I have a 2003 Jetta TDI 5 speed with about 42K miles. I lbought the car for the engine. The handling is tight, brakes are great, mileage is sick. Get about 51 MPG doing 75 - 80 mph up and down the turnpike. Nobody believes me when I tell them that.

THE BAD: Reliability is only so so though. Been to the dealer a number of times and they are 100% useless. A bunch of uninformed, unaccomidating idiots. They are only good for oil changes and I even hear they manage to screw that up
I had an upsolute chip in it but when the dealer changed the ecm, that was lost. Didn't feel it was a good idea to mention it to them
:badidea: Now the car is slooooooow. Rocketchip stage II, injectors, and clutch are in the plans :)

THE CONCLUSION: Overall it's a great little car that is more than I expected.

Wife used to get 45-50 mpg every tank with her 2002 Jetta. With the 04 TDI I think the best she has ever got is 45 mpg and more typically around 40 mpg ...all freeway. Personally I think the non-PD is a better motor and more reliable.

Now have in the family a 2003 Jetta TDI and 1999 NB TDI. Use to have a 1999 Jetta TDI but the boy decided to sell after he got my old 95 6.5TD. The 99 NB was mine but my duather and son-in-law now have it.

Nice car but would probably upgrade to Jetta if traded.
Dealer so-so 20K service $275  Jesse James is still alive.
Three years till retirement can't decide whether to trade one more time or just ride it out.

I agree. The TDI does my light duty commuting and long distance trips while the truck is for man stuff

Aren't many other choices in this country for diesel lovers. I first looked into diesel cars because of trips to Europe. Wondered why everyone had one. Rented one and thought it was pretty cool. Fun to drive a little car with a stick. With the mileage, I was sold.

My wife has a 2001 Jetta TDI. She loves it. She averages 45mpg. The thing I like best is I can run at 95mph+ and still get over 40mpg. Problem is it's just to small for me. She has a round trip of 90 miles every day and I do 130-150 miles a day. Needless to say our fuel bill is very large. Diesels are awesome. I can't even imagine driving a gasser anymore.

I got an 05 Jetta Wagon TDI/auto GLS last October. 15,000 miles later I have a lifetime average of 46.5mpg. Has seen the dealer once for the free first oil change. I use it as my small truck--haul anything that will fit in it. It just amazes me to drive over 650 miles between fill ups, then only put 14-15 gallons in. Sad part is I never seem to drive the Dmax anymore, I just run the wheels off the VW.

03 Golf TDI, 5spd ,bought new when I lived in Canada,42k on the odo., runs great on bio diesel, awesome economy esp on highway .thinking about chipping, Only complaint is the a.m portion radio which the dealer still needs to address otherwise trouble free. CAT fuel filter in place of VW OE filter. Nice car, tight and bought right in Canada on the good exchange rate.

I resemble that remark except for the corolla part. That is why we are getting the new one. Would have liked to get the Passat but they only have autos, no fun. I'm going to drive one of the new DSG 6 speeds this weeekend. It is suppose to be an auto clutch manual tranny. Might change my mind if Ilike the tranny. Wish they would put a 6-speed in the current one.

jmariano,

I have a good bit of experience with the older ones. Been driving them for 10 years now. My first was an '84 Rabbit.

Just got my first TDI

1999 Golf 5 speed. 162k miles. Runs and drives like new. Don't know mileage yet. I used to get 49 mpg in my '91 Jetta if I took it easy. Of course that only happened once just to see what I could get, then the hammer went down. I don't know what it got with the hammer down. I fill up at home.

05 TDI...getting about 43 on highways running 75-80. I love the car. I can take 8% grades at 85 MPH with the A/C on and the car doesn't downshift. Try doing that in a Toyota Camry/Honda Accord. I, too, agree that the VW customer service is the worst thing about owning a VW. I'm waiting for other manufacturers to put out a diesel car. I'm hoping for a baby duramax/powerstroke/cummins in a sedan.

Thanks. Glad to be here. I'm used to speaking in air-cooled terms, so I hope all will overlook.
This is pretty funny, now remember, I own and drive a 67' Beetle. While I was looking to purchase my 00' Beetle, I asked the sales guy "lets have a look in the trunk", and I walked to the front of the car. So I'm standing in the front, and he's standing at the rear. So, for about 3 seconds we just stand there looking at each other, both thinking, "what the hell are you doing?" (for those who don't know, the old Beetle had the trunk in the front).
Now, on to figuring out this TDi thing.

I went with RC as well. RC has just about any flavor tune you could ever want. I did the relatively tame stage 1+ which is a stage 1 HP and stage 2 TQ. I'm very happy with it and within a year or so I'll throw some guages on it and upgrade to a stage 2+.

One other thing to consider. As long as you don't get tuned in person, in other words you overnight the ECU, RC can give you a virtual EGR delete that works without any fault lights (CELs). He can also provide your ECU immobilizer login in code which is almost impossible to get from any VW dealer.

I should add... I have a 2004 Jetta TDI/Tip

I'm rolling up several thousand miles a month with my new job and looking to get a used Jetta TDI to save the ol' DMax. The way I figure it, a $10k car is easier to replace after 200k+ miles than a $45k truck with same.

Not in a big hurry as we have to wait till the new house is finished before we take on any other expenses, but I'm curious what to look for in a used Jetta TDI?

Timing belt replacement around 100k, right?

Proper oil is crucial, from what I've read.

What else?

Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Just checkin' in on being a dual diesel family. My wife has a '00 Jetta TDI. She commutes around 100mi rt a day. She's been avg 47mpg, 620-630mi on a tank. We bought the car as a cert pre owned, and we used every bit of the warranty that came w/it. After countless trips to dealer, and around $5000 in warranty work later, her car is just like new. After one oil change, my wife brought the car home and I inspected it. I found an oil rag laying on the exhaust in the eng compartment, and missing bolts on the eng shield. If it wasn't for the service part, VW has a good thing.

The tdiclub.com site has a lot of info that could be useful in your search for a tdi. Good luck. It seems like if you find a good one it's a tank and almost indestructable. The bad ones nickel and dime ya, in VW case, multiple Franklin, not a lot of in between w/ VW.When all is said, we love our Jetta, it's a really fun car to drive.

VW dealers are horrible.....

I was actually relieved when my warranty was up. ):h
manntranny---it actually scared me when the warranty exp, it meant the repair bill was coming out of my pocket. It is nice not putting up w/the dealer but its always in the back of my mind how much the next repair will cost.

Timing belt replacement around 100k, right?

Proper oil is crucial, from what I've read.

Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Timing belt changes on the newer TDIs are 100k miles.

The newer PD injector rollers need 505.01 oil which is expensive but can go up to 10k between changes.

If you want to play with bioD, for now VW only approves B5 bioD. Rumor has it the PDs are a bit more finicky with bioD.

Pre-PDs (90hp) are reported to get a bit more fuel economy than the 100hp PD.
