Folks,

Does anyone have an idea on how to reduce the turbo whine sound inside the cab? It doesn't bother me but gives my other half a very bad headache when we tow.

With the turbo being such a high frequency, I don't think there is anything that is going to reduce the whine inside the truck short of adding more insulation in the firewall. Not trying to be a smarta$$, but my wife complains about it now that I got an AFE intake and I told her if she didn't like it that she might want to try a set of earplugs. It doesn't give her a headache though. I just turn the radio up a little more, and that helps.

Good Luck!

Buy your wife some earplugs

seriously though
If you have an aftermarket intake try removing it and putting a high flow in the stock location. You could try buying Dynamat and installing it under the hood and on the inside-side of the firewall

I kinda wish I had more whine in the turbo. Its too quiet. But I guess you got to please the women. Or find one that likes loud turbos and exhaust, but they are hard to find.):h

the turbo in my dads 2005 Dodge-:t is quiet. Other than that, JHNZ71 is right, not much you can do.

Put a stock paper filter in it may help. Open exhaust also affects the sound under the hood. It may well be the low frequency that gets to her.

Folks,

Thanks for the ideas. We only use the truck to pull the 5er so we'll have to try a few of the things to see if they'll help.

As far as the wife and divorce, maybe y'all should read our bio. Other half doesn't always mean a wife....

MORE TURBO WHINE!!! LESS WIFE WHINE!!!

If she rides in the back, :) She will probably appreciate the turbo whine more.

Just kidding.

Trade the diesel dually in for an 8.1 ltr gas dually. Probably get money back and no more whining! or whining? Oh this English language - same word, different meaning........

I would say man up and deal with it or start removing stuff like the intake and exhaust. At least it doesn't have a horrible clatter like the other brands...

Or slap a big rainbow sticker over the intake inlet, that should help...):h Seriously, you cannot get much quieter than a stock LB7. You did buy a TURBO diesel, even the diesel VW Beetle that your "other half" probably drives has turbo whine. It is a side effect of power.

I know exactly what truck I have and what is associated with it. I grew up on a horse farm with diesel dually's. I think we bought the absolute best truck we could ever want. The Edge EZ and MBRP Exhaust have been really fun...<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We are going to try using ear plugs for the whine. It really is a problem, not just an inconvenience. If anyone has ever had a migraine headache you would understand. That is what the whine is causing. Hopefully the ear plugs will stop the high pitch that is causing this.

As for the rude comments, guess some of us still haven't left middle school yet.

DuallyDads,

Unfortunately every post objecting to the turbo whine degenerates the way this one has. I'm in the same boat as you towing a 5th wheel, and when pulling the trailer the engine often sits right in the "sweet spot" for producing the whine constantly. Gives me a headache, too.

Do you have a boost gauge? In my rig the whine is emitted when the boost is about 2 PSI. Above or below that, it's not there. I found that you can eliminate the whine partially or totally by propping open the wastegate a little, at the cost of lost power, of course. In stock form my maximum boost is about 22 psi. An empty 0-60 run takes 10 seconds. With the wastegate slightly opened (about 1/8 inch travel at the end of the lever arm) to produce a maximum 18 PSI boost, the whine is significantly reduced in amplitude and the "sweet spot" is moved to where it doesn't occur as much. The 0-60 time, as closely as I can measure, is unchanged. Opening the wastegate more, to get 12 PSI maximum boost, the whine is 100% eliminated, and 0-60 time is increased to 11 seconds.

I'm going eventually try settings between the 12 and 18 PSI max boost to see how high I can go with 100% whine elimination. I'm using a gadget that I made clamped to the wastegate actuator rod to hold it open. The high pressure of the wastegate spring makes precise adjustments difficult. I found that pushing 30 to 40 PSI of compressed air into the wastegate servo makes things a lot easier to work with.

Seems that a few people have problems and it dosnt appear normal or you guys have ears like bats. IMO yank all the perf stuff and take her to the dealer. Take a tech for a ride in it with it doing what you describe. Or try to get someone with a simmilar truck to take a ride in yours or you ride in thiers to see if your just ultra sensitive or if its the truck.

BTDT. Dealer says it's "normal turbo whine". A fellow Diesel Place member traded rides with me. Trying hard, he could hear my turbo whine. Doesn't bother him. He has a metal intake tube on his truck and the whine is even louder. Doesn't bother him.

This could very well be an individual thing. I dumped my Quantum hard disk for a Seagate Barracuda because of the whine that doesn't seem to bother other people. And we know from the door chimes that everybody who designs these trucks at GM must be half deaf.

What is the sweet spot?

I was using the term "sweet spot" to describe the operating condition that results in turbo whine. Before installing a boost gauge the description was about 1700 to 1900 RPM and under light acceleration. With the trailer attached the descrition was unfortunately holding a steady highway speed. With the boost gauge, it's simply about 2 psi of boost to generate the whine.

I never thought i would see a thread topic like this. All us nuts wanna make the turbo as loud as possible. Like someone said you could use extra insulation but who knows how much that will even work. Mine is fairly loud now after a few mods. The thought of it hurting your ears has never even crossed my mind. What are you people bats??

I had the same issue with a very high pitched whine on my LB7 last time I towed my 20ft enclosed car trailer. Was very anoying after a while. Fast forward a few weeks to when I changed the oil in my truck and I notice that the "filter minder" is sucked down about 1/3 of the way. According to this it doesn't need to be replaced (only 25K miles on it) but I go ahead and order a new AC delco 1618 for it (no one in my town of over 140K people carries the AC Delco, only the POS off brand stuff). Week later it comes in and I put the new one in. The next week I hook up the same trailer and go for a 200 mile run north. Along the way I notice that the trubo whine is almost non-existant now :)

So it got me to thinking that the whine may be related to the fact that the turbo is not able to get the entire amount of air that it needs and that the leading edges of the intake side turbine wheel are starting to "cavitate" a bit causing the very high pitched whine I was hearing. Anyway, that's the only variable that I can point to that got rid of it for me so I thought I would pass it along.

Good Luck

Yeah which air filter will make it whine louder?

Wayne Dohnal
06-23-2005, 08:53 PM
Searay90,

Thanks for the info. Early on I did try a new air filter and it made no difference at all with the whine. However, one time when I changed my oil the whine went away until I got a few hundred miles on the new oil. As luck would have it I had an appointment set up for the dealer to listen to the whine and then innocently changed the oil not thinking it could affect it. I rescheduled the appointment. The oil change affected it only that one time, however.

For those that want to make the whine louder, a metal intake tube with a K&N filter would be a good start.

I got the AFE 2, and promptly got rid of it due to the fact that sound gave me a SPLITTING headache. Then I read those posts about the stock paper, and realized I did the right thing.

I just put a K&N filter set and the whine I can barely here it.
the only time I hear it is when the windows are down and the radio is off.

Has the windshield been replaced? Some aftermarket windshields aren't as thick as the factory ones which will give you less insulation. My Brotherinlaw has a '99 Dodge w/ the Cummins, used to never hear the turbo. He recently had his windshield replaced and now the turbo whine seems loud inside the truck. He likes it.
