: Is it ok to drive truck with only downpipe on
LovetheDirtyMax 07-05-2009, 02:05 PM I think its called a down pipe? I got a silverline exhaust and none of the system is able to hang on a hanger so its resting on a metal bar. I removed everything except for the 1st piece that comes off the hanger.
I downloaded my NON DPF tunes and am about to go install them. Would I be able to drive the truck 8-10 miles to an exhaust shop so they can weld hangers on?
Or should I not drive the truck at all with only that one piece on?
tampa1020 07-05-2009, 03:21 PM I want to say that you should be fine, it might be a little louder than normal but you should have no problems especially in only 8-10 miles.
snifer 07-05-2009, 03:23 PM My first ? is why did the exhaust system you bought have no hangers.
This is news to me, every system I have put on had hangers, some uses u-bolt style you can put them wherever.
On driving with only the down pipe and no support for it, I would suggest NO.
If you still have the cat/doc on the downpipe will be even heavier and could crack around the connection at the engine from not being supported.
But again I have never been in your situation, I have always had everything on hand for the complete install.

It did come with hangers but from the length of the piping the clamps w/ hangers will not connect to the rubber hangers.
The aftermarket downpipe is on and completly supported just by being clamped on to the turbo pipe.
Mike_S 07-05-2009, 03:44 PM first of all, that isn't the down pipe. what you have installed is the frontpipe. The downpipe connects directly to the turbine outlet. As long as you have everything supported well, and the codes tuned out for the missing emissions equipment, the engine wouldn't care if the whole exhaust was missing. You will be fine.

If the downpipe is supported then you should be OK, just wear some ear plugs and watch out for cops.

Its confusing between Ford & GM
Fords is called downpipe from the turbo outlet, to mid pipe and so on.
Just so I can understand exhaust for the GM`s better, the downpipe is the short pipe that reduces and the front pipe connects to it, for the rest of the exhaust out. "Correct"
Thanks in advance.
DURAtotheMAX 07-05-2009, 10:50 PM its fine. The new trucks with VVT's are so quiet that even with no front pipe installed, they are still quieter than a 24valve cummins WITH the exhaust ON!

the "downpipe" connects to the turbine outlet. The "frontpipe" connects to the downpipe. The "intermediate pipe" connects to the frontpipe. The "tailpipe" connects to the intermediate pipe and goes out the back end.

stump_breaker 07-30-2009, 10:11 PM I ran mine for a day with the down pipe, extension and then the tip turned down in front of the rear axle. Everything went fine except it was loud as hell!
