: 01's really that bad?
chevy_9465 05-08-2005, 08:22 PM They sold the 02 i was wanting so i got to looking again and found an 01 CC dually 6 speed at a local dealer. About a month ago a guy at the dealership told us that they had just got in a 6 speed on a trade and it was still in the shop, so i went back last friday and the guy says it was still in the shop with the engine tore down, i just cant figure out what would be taking so long, hes supposed to give me a call when its done, we went back and looked at it but the guys that went with us didnt have a clue what was wrong with it. Should i be scared of this truck or with 84,000 miles is it worth the 24,9 their asking.
Anybody got a crew cab dually that doesnt like it, i like the way it looks but it looks like it might be kinda hard to get around in
JhnZ71 05-08-2005, 09:05 PM honestly it varies by the truck, I know a couple guys with 01's and they love them, they got all 8 injectors replaced with the origional recal and havent had a problem with them. one has 190k on it and i think the other is at almost 250k. It really depends on the truck, my 03' is giving me trouble and its got just over 31k on it.
TheBac 05-08-2005, 09:05 PM Try to get the VIN, and ask the techs here to run it, they will give you a really nice piece of info on the truck. Ask them if they see anything out of whack....

RickDLance 05-08-2005, 09:56 PM Out of the 6 Duramax's I've had I liked my 01 best.
duramaxdiesel 05-08-2005, 10:12 PM I love my '01. But that's just me. Sure, there were a few issues like the cold air on the passenger side and injectors but GM covered it. Let us know why the Dmax is being torn down. Maybe the injectors are being done?
blnagel 05-08-2005, 10:31 PM I know several other people that have had 0 problems with their 01s. Cottonwoodblues is one that I know and he likes his ALOT! The price seems a bit steep IMO.

Tel9000 05-08-2005, 11:24 PM I love my '01. It is not cost neutral to trade or sell vehicles because of excessive repairs and maintenance. New vehicles need just as many repairs as vehicles with 200k miles. It is not until the warranty runs out, that we actually admit it.
Mike Mac 05-09-2005, 12:45 AM OK guys, please don't blast me for this, but I think the build detail on the 01s are better than the rest. I have noticed this since late 01 that the newer ones were kind of sloppy (casting flash, on aluminum, attention to insulation detail, just a few little things here and there.) I'm a cabinet maker so I'm tuned into detail, parts allignment fit and finish etc. and I wouldn't trade my 01 for any of the other years unless this one gets wrecked, knock on wood. No pun intended.I keep the under side as clean as the top ( living in Phoenix its easy ta do) and my 4yr. old truck and 5yr. old Tahoe both look almost new. Just my 2 cents.
Victory Red 05-09-2005, 07:36 AM There's no real reason to 'fear it' more than any other vehicle. My 03 has needed a BCM at 4000, injectors at 25,000, water pump at 39,000 and now the dreaded "service 4x4" msg. Not sure why one vehicle has problems and another one doesn't. In any case, the biggest issue early one was injectors and 01's are covered for 7yr/200,000 miles.
harleycb 05-09-2005, 11:01 AM While I've only had my '01 for 15 months, the only problems I've had is to replace the rear rotors and some front end work. The engine purrs along just fine with 81k on it - still with the original injectors. Getting nearly 18 mpg on #2, wishing for more, but better than others. Has more than enough power for the loads I pull.
I have to agree with others - There are a lot of good '01's out there!
JEBar 05-09-2005, 11:59 AM purchased our '02 in October of '01 so it has the first generation injectors and is pretty much identical to '01's ... she should turn over 88,000 within a week or so and to date hasn't been back in the shope for any engine/transmission issues.. that most certainly could change the next time I crank her but we are scheduled to leave June 1st on a 69 day cross country trip towing an 11,000+ pound camper and have no reason to believe she won't do well

Kennedy 05-09-2005, 12:36 PM I'd be more afraid of the 6 speed/dual mass than the 01 Dmax, BUT the 2001's seem to besomewhat more common to have head gasket leaks ofr injector/cup issues. These issues are easily fixed in most cases, and still can happen to the later models.
chevy_9465 05-09-2005, 01:03 PM [QUOTE=Kennedy]I'd be more afraid of the 6 speed/dual mass than the 01 Dmax,
My friend had his replaced with a newer version and said that it was supposed to last longer, that would be one of my first mods aftermarket clutch, flywheel pressureplate, the whole deal, so im not gonna let that hold me back cause im really wantin the 6 speed. If they dont call me back by the end of the week im gonna go back over there and see if i can find out some more about it, i wish i had the vin # so i could check it
Jonathan G 05-09-2005, 07:13 PM I love my 2001. I have 112k on her and she drives like a new truck!!
chevy_9465 05-09-2005, 11:30 PM i got this pic somewhere on here but i cant remember who the owner, im wantin to find out tire size and stuff like that i really like the way it looks
acehi 05-10-2005, 01:15 AM I'm an 01 owner as well and love it. I don't like the looks of the newer models, don't care much for the avalance style front end. My dad as the newer model and so far he likes it. I am still running on original injectors and the only work done on the transmission is the NSBU switch... I have 70K miles on her now and runs like new. Well, better then new with some attitude. :)
stretch 05-10-2005, 05:59 AM I too have an '01 and so far its been great. Only warrenty work done was a fuel leak repair. It still has its original injectors and NSBU. I get 20 mpg highway with ease and 17 mpg local if I don't romp on it too much. Wit the "juice" on it for the last few years, its been a ton of fun to drive.:D

The 2001 doesn't scare me, the 84,000mi doesn't scare me, the $24,900 doesn't scare me, the engine being torn down does.
Think about it. At 84k the engine is under warranty. The owner can have it fixed for free. He trades it in busted??? Sounds like the previous owner was unhappy with the truck. I know if I have a warranteed vehicle, I'd get fixed before trading it in. Maybe that's just me.
Kennedy 05-10-2005, 10:32 AM I too was wondering why a guy would want a truck that presently has the engine in pieces.
Duramax Dually 05-10-2005, 03:39 PM Adding to the list,
I have a very early 01, have 109K hard miles. Had injectors done at 100K mark or so. No Problemo's. Truck is excellent. Wife asked if I we should consider a new truck since miles were getting high, said "NOPE". I will replace the motor before I buy a new truck. Cheaper to repair then spend 60K on new one. I have friends with newer models that have had more problems at less than 50K miles.
luvthesmellofdiesel 05-10-2005, 05:14 PM Same thing I told my wife. When the motor goes, it gets rebuilt or replaced. No more new trucks for me.

chevy_9465 05-10-2005, 09:37 PM Ok i went down there today and looked at it again and this time asked a few more questions, apparently the dealership only has one diesel mechanic b/c the salesman i talked to said the truck was tore down for injectors and the guy had to stop working on it to work on some of their customers vehicles he said that why its taking so long when i asked when he thought it would be done he said he wasnt sure b/c every time he would ask they would say it should be sometime in the next few days so evidently their pretty behind. when we were their a while back i talked to the same salesman and he said the guy traded it in for a gasser b/c his wife didnt like the smell of diesel, so either he was really whipped or he was just wanting a new truck and decided to go with a gasser, or maybe he was having a lot of toruble with it, just wish i had of got the vin number. the truck is in great shape its the LS package but i still think 24'995 is a little high but the truck is really starting to grow on me. P.S. anybody know what kind of warranties gm offers on used vehicles
Tel9000 05-11-2005, 08:35 AM I'm with you guys. I do not want another truck. After trading trucks every couple of years, trying to find the one I really liked, I finally got this one. When the motor goes, I will replace it. When the tranny goes, I will replace it. I am now convinced that you can literally drive a vehicle forever as long as you maintain it correctly. I will no longer take the buttkicking on depreciation when trading at the dealership. I will no longer pay their ridiculous prices. I will no longer pay a huge sum in taxes every time a new vehicle is purchased. I will never finance a vehicle again, and be a slave to the bank. My '01 is paid for, and I love it. I have now won the vehicle game.
DmaxPhil 05-11-2005, 09:20 AM Amen to that Tel9000!! I hope to be there one day. :D
Back to topic....
I think you should be able to find quite a few trucks you like for around $25k.
McRat 05-11-2005, 09:26 AM Ok i went down there today and looked at it again and this time asked a few more questions, apparently the dealership only has one diesel mechanic b/c the salesman i talked to said the truck was tore down for injectors and the guy had to stop working on it to work on some of their customers vehicles he said that why its taking so long when i asked when he thought it would be done he said he wasnt sure b/c every time he would ask they would say it should be sometime in the next few days so evidently their pretty behind. when we were their a while back i talked to the same salesman and he said the guy traded it in for a gasser b/c his wife didnt like the smell of diesel, so either he was really whipped or he was just wanting a new truck and decided to go with a gasser, or maybe he was having a lot of toruble with it, just wish i had of got the vin number. the truck is in great shape its the LS package but i still think 24'995 is a little high but the truck is really starting to grow on me. Please don't tell me that you believe anything a salesman says about why a vehicle was traded in. He's not going to tell you, "The previous owner thought it was a POS."
Get the VIN. Do a Carfax on it. But I'd look around some more.
Kirby 05-15-2005, 11:48 AM Bought my 01 last year and "LOVE THAT TRUCK"
wtman 05-15-2005, 01:35 PM i have a 01 dmax dually, injectors replaced at around 105k, injector pump rplaced around 32k by previous owner under warranty. I absolutely love the truck. I had all the updates put into the computer and it runs like a champ. I have no complaints at all about the truck. It has 112k on it now and holds the road and drives as well as any new truck i have ever bought or owned.
chevy_9465 05-17-2005, 10:56 PM went back today and talked to the mechanic thats working on it and he said it will be done tomm. afternoon, but i gues well see, anyways he said that it was the injector but it also blew a headgasket, so i dunno, im waitin for a vin check now
chevy_9465 05-18-2005, 03:05 PM here it is,anybdy see any probelms.

Chevysrus 05-18-2005, 06:47 PM I don't know, it says all 8 injectors were replaced Oct 2004 so why is it back in for injector replacement? Those should have been the new and improved injector replacements and a very early failure if they are doing them again in May of '05 - 6 -7 months later.
If I was the previous owner and went through all that stuff, I would trade that puppy myself I think.
You would think that with all that work done it should be in really good shape now, but here it is back in the shop "again".
I would keep looking if I were you and pass on this puppy. Just doesn't feel right to me.
But on the other hand makes for some great negotiation leverage to get that price down.
I have an early '01 and it must have been a hand built prototype....very little issues for me, NSB switch on the tranny, Fuel pressure valve, battery leaked, not much to complain about and yes I still have the original injectors, but still under 50K as well. Truck was built Oct 2000 and I bought it May 2001. In 2 weeks the truck has a birthday and will be 4 years old, I don't drive it much in the winter, but in the summer it's a weekend warrior for sure, plus lots of towing trips some big an some small.
I do love the truck and I keep adding stuff to make it better. Recently added '05 OEM power extending towing mirrors. I really like them too. I have overkilled the maintenance, because it's fun to do all the cool stuff to the truck and still keep it stock (no power add-on's). What I don't know won't kill me, so just stock is fast enough for now. Someday maybe, just for kicks.
Anyway, if you can find a good '01 or '02 they have the best warranty and you will be pleased. Later models are OK as well and some of the features are better if you like the steering wheel controls or the Info center etc etc. If you are going to move up then go all the way to the LLY engine and skip all the LB-7 stuff alltogehter, but that will cost more to do.
Good luck
Grod3max 05-19-2005, 12:44 AM Owned my 01' since 8 miles on o.d. Now with just 80k only work was injectors at 45k. Better milage the more miles added. Motor runs cooler and milage has improved. Wouldn't want a newer model for free trade. I like the old body style.
