: Am I Nuts?
EricJD 07-03-2009, 10:23 PM I posted this same question posed differently in the intro thread but time is tight so please forgive me. I have a deposit on an 02 crew cab sb with 9500 original miles. Price tag is 26k. Is it too risky being the first generation duramax with the injector concerns? Please let me know what you think, I've got to sh* or get off the pot on Monday. Don't worry about sparing my feelings, 26K is pretty much like novacaine.:o: BTW, I would buy a four year bumper to bumper warrantee for under 2k on top of the purchase price in this deal.
paoutdoorsman 07-03-2009, 10:42 PM I think that's a question only you can answer. If injectors is the only thing making you second guess your decision, I wouldn't let that hold me back. I got 112K out of my original 02 injectors. If the 02 you're considering does anything close to that, you've got a long time before you have to worry about that particular problem.
TIM Z 07-03-2009, 11:09 PM Yes, your nuts:D
26K for an 02? It better be a magazine cover truck . But its your money!
9500 original miles? What, did grandpa only drive it to the store and back?
Make sure your extended warranty covers the injectors. My non-GM extended warranty does not cover the injectors for some reason.
My truck has 173k miles and no injectors replaced. I may be showing signs of failure but thats another topic.
If they do go, I'll be calling Mr. Obama for a bailout to help pay for new ones.
EricJD 07-03-2009, 11:17 PM Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate the fact that all things hold varying values from person to person but I'm polling the expertise and experience of the readers/members here with this thread. I guess I'm interested to hear what you (all) have to say on this particular year truck considering this one's 26K dollar price is 4K above any book value while simultaneously factoring in it having only 9,500 miles and being like new condition wise. So here's another way of framing the question, If any of you were truckless and came across this particular duramax what might pass through your minds on the positive/negative sides of the ledger? Thanks again, your input is really appreciated as this would be a huge money step for me.
okierzr 07-03-2009, 11:28 PM If i buy another dmax it will be a lb7.I love mine it get better fuel mileage than any of my friends newer dmaxs.Maybe it the EFI LIVE.:rocking:
emerson 07-03-2009, 11:30 PM I won't buy another LB7. $26k is way too much.
fight like hell for 20-22k with warranty. 26k seems kinda high even though it supposed 9500(1600miles a year??)as far as the lb7...i have an 06 3500 lbz as well as truck in sig.....my lb7 with a small ppe tune and 127k will walk all over my lbz.both are excellent trucks but the lb7 doesnt have emissions.i have had the injector failure and while next time itll be my dime, i wont sell the truck...it runs too well!!!
Charlie B 07-04-2009, 08:51 AM I would really check this truck out. You do not say if it is a private or dealer sale, does the truck have options, fog lights, leather, power everything. The truck has been sitting somewhere for most of its life, moisture builds in the most unlikely places , look under the dash , under the seats , under the truck for excessive rust and corrosion. Was the truck in an accident, maybe in a flood or hurricane. I would make sure the extended warranty covered all electronics, including the radio. Change all fluids & filters. Find out where the truck was purchased and any related repairs that were done. I would try to get a more reasonable price with the warranty. Its your dime so just make a good educated decision, your the one that has to live with it . just my thoughts again Charlie
Tolliwacker 07-04-2009, 09:19 AM I would be highly suspicious, but then again, I bet it is a truck on a lot somewhere that a person traded in because they did not drive it, and the person who traded it is the same TYPE of person as EricJD is, does not care to much about the money side, and the person who traded it took it in the pants as well. EricJD has stumbled across this truck on the lot, and a salesman has said how this is a $45,000 truck that only has 26K miles on it, for HALF PRICE! Even though the dealer got the truck for probably 12-14K and they are making the high fives all the way to the bank. Now I always say, it is only worth what someone is willing to pay, so if it is worth it to YOU, and you do your homework, ie.... Checking out the truck and all, and it is what you want, what you are willing to pay, I say go for it.
I would not be paying that for that truck though.........16-18K is more in the range for me, and that is ONLY because it is low milage, I would go all over that truck with a fine tooth comb though.
The LB7 has proven very reliable for me! 189K and counting..........
keith_2500hd 07-04-2009, 10:14 AM X2 on tolliwacker, don't throw money away. get vin and run it in vin section and call your insurance agent to check vin in his data base. carfax sometimes doesn't have all the facts, insurance companies do and may refuse or charge extra coverage of vehicle.
OC_DMAX 07-04-2009, 11:52 AM Way to much money for an '02, I don't care how many miles it has on it.
Paul Clancy 07-04-2009, 07:43 PM Ya, 26k should be lbz territory.
LS1POWERED 07-05-2009, 02:43 PM seems a little expensive for an 02. Does it look like it has 9k on it? Its very easy to change the guage cluster on those trucks, i would be worried about odomiter fraud.
DieselDemon18 07-05-2009, 04:03 PM great find on the truck however 26k is a bit much id just go for 20k at most but like everyone else says give the truck a through inspection
EricJD 07-09-2009, 02:58 PM I appreciate your thoughts about this question and your honest opinions. In the end I opted out as I found reason and believe it is way too much for the year even considering the condition. The reason I was drooling like a kid in a candy shop was because it was/is absolutely clean, no rust anywhere. I verified that a pipe fitter had purchased it from his father who was a manager at a chevy dealership. The guy figured it would be his last truck purchase and because he drove the company work truck all the time hardly used the duramax. It was get this, never driven in Winter and garaged so remained spotlessly clean. He sold it because of an ugly divorce. I carfaxed it and had the VIN run through a dealership. It was a dealer selling it, the warrantee would have been complete bumper to bumper electronics to mechanical to seals for four years. I suppose even though I didn't buy it I must have been nuts for expecting to post a question without being characterized as someone who doesn't care about the money side of things and goes around taking it in the pants :-) I'll be watching to see if the dealer does get the $ he is asking. Thanks for the site and information. E
dmrodco 07-09-2009, 04:59 PM I just bought this 03 with 124K on the ticker for 15.5K. took it into chev for new injectors. service manager says it shoudl be good to go for a good long time. :D its the LS model and is nicly equiped. bags w/compressor b&w hitch.
carter_44 07-09-2009, 05:36 PM they want way too much for that truck. ill sell you my 02 with lots of toys right now for 15k. 155K on ticker and it runs hard. you can find lb7s all day withing 10-18k depending on miles and options. ill find you an lbz with under 80K miles and toys for 23k.
dsskywalker 07-09-2009, 05:46 PM I posted this same question posed differently in the intro thread but time is tight so please forgive me. Buy it................................................
EricJD 07-09-2009, 06:53 PM I've too seen some newer trucks with under 100k for 23K and up. There's a beauty of an 07 with decent options + cap with only 50K on it, guy wants 36k. If I had an extra 20K sitting around I'd probably pick it up. There are several 02's, 03's and 04's around too all in the 22K range but with 70K miles +. Yes I understand that 70K isn't anything for a diesel, but remember my original question was having to do with a very close to new old stock '02 with only 9500 miles. I see alot more duramax crew cabs trucks out West and South for the prices you've mentioned and having decent miles but I'm not buying long distance. Recently an '06 came up here for a firm 27K. It has a low 38K miles and is pretty well loaded. That is a reasonable price for the market up here and it's a nice truck. I need a long bed, it's a sb. I'd much rather an '06 instead of a first generation duramax. Currently I'm considering an '03 w/104K loaded with everything I want for under 14K. It may be pretty crusty underneath so might not be what I end up with. Even knowing the '06 is better in many respects, 1/2 the amount of $ leaving the house is still 1/2 the cash. I'll repeat one more time for anyone coming in without reading the first post carefully, I just wanted a reality check on an 02 with 9500 miles. I had a little voice saying it was nuts but wanted the cold water spashed in my face. What else can I say but; "bullseye".
Jim659 07-09-2009, 07:17 PM With a little homework you could get a pretty decent '06 or '07 for about the same money right now.
EricJD 05-12-2010, 05:42 PM Ended up w/'06 CC LBZ w/38k miles. Posted pics in garage.
