my 04 duramax has 16000 miles on it and the turbo went out. I had it at a dealer about a month ago because it was surging under a load and I told them it was the turbo. They told me it was my tires. I was left without a vehicle when there was a sound similiar to an angle grinder grinding metal under the hood. The pickup started backfiring when I stepped on the accellerator. My concern is what could this do to the motor?

How does a diesel "backfire"?

JimNot sure myself, but let me tell you my story. Bought the truck new. First day took it to work. Out of work for the day and headed home. 10 MPH through the company parking lot. Get out to the road, get about 20 MPH and one of the loudest BANGS (backfire??) I've heard in a loooong time. Truck keeps running so I head for the dealers with less than a 100 miles on it. Explained the details to them, and the only reaction was, "Hummmm, never heard of that before. Let us know if it happens again."

The truck is just over a year old now, has 36,900 miles on it, and never BANGED? again, ...so far. Predator says all the injector's are in balance, runs like a top. Haven't had even one problem like some of the other guy's on here have talked about. Still madly in love with my D/A.
