: K & N causing problems?

Just before leaving on vacation a couple of weeks ago, decided I would install a K & N air filter. Two hundred miles down the road, refueled at a questionable station. Twenty miles down the road, I made a pit stop and checked the air in my air bags. When I tried to pull out onto the hwy., it went into limp mode. Got a message to clean the particllate filter. Also one that said reduced engine power. Called a dealer and he said to just drive it and it would clean itself. Sounded good to me so off I went. It cleard up and seemed to run ok but mileage dropped to between 6 and 7 (towijng a camper at 10K #). Had been running around 11 mpg. Made it another 160 miles and into a dealer. It was a Saturday and no diesel mechanic working. This one and the first one told me it was from letting it idle while airing things up. Said he could regen it but GM would not cover it and would run $200. I shut the hood and hit the road again. Service Engine light would come on and after 50-75 miles would go off. Made it another 150 miles to another dealer. He said it had set the Mass Air Sensor code. But said he could not replace it unless it was actually acting up when I brought it in. So, back on the road I went. Still getting terrible mileage. My guess is that when I installed the K&N, it was heavy oiled and it sucked it into the intake and covered the MAS. I thought I might clean it but am not sure where it is located. There is a small electronic device about a foot down the intake tube from the filter. I pulled it out but was afraid to spray a cleaner on it. There is also a device on the intake manifold that might be it but I didn't mess with it. I am not in a small town with not dealer within a 100+ miles and a 1000 miles from home. Any feed back and ideas would be appreciated. I even caught myself wanting to pull into a Ford dealer and trade. My first Duramax was an '02 and just didn't have many problems with it.

It's the small electronic gizmo about a foot past your airfilter on your intake tube. I have heard similiar problems from others about the oil from the K&N filter coating Mass air flow sensors. I am running the Banks Ram-Air kit for about 15,000.00 miles with no problems. I would bet money on it, it's your K&N system that is causing the problems. They make a Mass airflow sensor cleaner that you can get, which should temporarily solve the problem until you put the factory unit or another air intake system on. Good luck.

I have the K&N filter (replacement filter only not an entire air box)in mine and have never had a problem until a few weeks ago. Got 3/4 of the way to Panama City Beach(300 miles into trip) and stopped for lunch. Got back in fired it up and realized everyone was not ready so I shut it down. Finally got back on the road and into limp mode it went. This has been the first and only time this has happened. Kept on going down the road and the limp mode and DPF message went away but the engine light stayed on. Put a fresh tank of fuel in it once we arrived and have had no problems since.

I have over oiled a few times myself, and noticed that before I installed.
I take a clean old tee shirt and dab it like you would a babys behind, to get excess oil off.
Here is the thread discussing simular problems.
When I did this reply it was 10 down from yours.

The trick question is, was it a aFe ProGuard 7 (7 layers of filtering)or the standard aFe (5 layers) quite a difference with filtering.
The K&N is a different material which does not appear to hold together very well with turbos, and only has 4 layers.

I have a filter only that I took off my 06 and want to put in my 2009 lmm , what if I blew out filter with an air hose and just put in dry............?????????
Don't want problems only got 386 miles on it.

Its the standard-5.But I should say,it does not kick a light like the K@N,just blows smoke.as where the stock wont.

With my diesels I have only run aFe Proguard 7`s since 2003.
Before 03 I didnot feel comfortable especially with K&N based on the issues my company had with them.
Mine does not blow any smoke, but it does breathe better than stock.
You have 2 more layers of filteration v.s. aFe standard, 3 more layers v.s. K&N.
The K&N and aFe standard will flow, a little more air v.s. the aFe 7.
I would have to say because of that you get the smoke.

With them (only)costing $70, I have 2 and clean at my leasure.
That way my down time is minimal at the most 10 minutes.
The clean and oiled one sets in the box for several months wrapped in plastic bag.
Before I install it, I take a clean old tee shirt and lightly dab the filter to remove any excess oil.
Never, has there been any problems.

I`m assuming your talking about a aftermarket oil type airfilter???
If so DO NOT install dry and/or blow it out with a airhose you will blow holes in it.
After washing it just let it dry out naturally.
I use a larger plastic dish pan and cover it with a old clean tee shirt to keep out crap.
This is why I have 2 filters, washing, drying and oiling at MY leasure and minimal down time with the vehicle.

I feel you will be satisfied.
Two suggestions: If you get the pro7
One:
Keep the standard aFe clean oiled in a plastic bag in the box.
When you feel its time to clean the 7 and if your pressed for time, just install the 5 temporarily and clean the 7 at your leasure. Like I have mentioned earlier.
Two:
I use a clear grease the type for swimming pools O-rings and such, it comes in small tubes plus it does not dry out from the heat.
A light film on the airfilters rubber seal the section that goes into the intake only.
It makes it easier to slip in and I feel gives you a better seal.
Pretty much all airfilter manufactors techs say this is not needed, but they are not the ones fighting to put them in.

The K&N could be kept for emergency use only, or sell it.

It appears your one that likes aftermarket airfilters, you will be happy.
I use to have to clean mine every 4K, worked in dusty conditions.
Retired now so that will change, and how I do mine its not a big deal for me anyway, no real down time anyway.

In Feb 08 after I swapped out and installed a clean airfilter, I had a check engine light P0101 after 20 miles.
I went to the dealer and found out even vehicles with stock airfilters was getting this code.
There was a re-cal on the maf sensor for this issue and I have not had any since.

If someone has a code/checker the tech told me that glitch codes will happen, he suggested for me get a code/checker clearer.
And keep track of the code #, of course I bought one then and have not had any codes since.
He states if the same code comes up again, then most likely there is a issue and get to a dealer as soon as you can.

K&N now has a MAF sensor tester because of so many claims about oil fouling the MAF. If I remember correctly, they will test any MAF that you send them. The dealers usually dont have a tester and it is an easy sell on there part. The MAF cleaners that I have seen are just contact cleaner.
