: front end 'clinking' and locking rear diff....
I just noticed today, when in 4x4 when take my foot off the gas there is a clinking which sounds like its comming from the front drivers side. Also... when i a moving slowy and turn sharp its like it hit the brakes. It comes to a complete stop with out even touching the brakes... and Also... when i am turning sharp my rear tire kinda spins sorta.. more like the rear diff becomes locked. And all this is in 4x4. What are you guys thoughts on this!!!
Thank you for all ur input!! (in advance)
94duallyman 05-07-2005, 11:19 PM Sounds like a CV joint going out. Mine does the same thing, and I was told to replace that axle.
what about the rear tires... and the stopping thing when i turn sharp?
And you only have this problem in 4x4??
94duallyman 05-07-2005, 11:29 PM That CV boot that goes over the joint probably has a leak in it, and all the grease leaked out, causing that joint to dry out, so when you turn sharp it puts in a bind, causing the clicking and stopping. As for you back tire, it seems to me it is spinning to try to get the truck to move. For some reason, my truck does that to, it acts like the rear end locks to posi in 4 wheel drive, why I'm not really sure. Hopefully someone else will give some ideas to, I am sharing my experiences. Hopefully you get it straightened out. LOL my truck has been down for about 3 weeks now, so I know how you feel when there is something you can't exactly pin point. Hope this helps.
So is the CV joint and axle all one unit???
is it safe to drive in 2wd like this??? or how about even 4x4?
yaeh it does help alot, and makes sense too.. Thank you!
94duallyman 05-07-2005, 11:46 PM Yes, the axle and CV joint is made together, the CV joint is that big rubber boot you see behind your front wheel, that allows you to be able to turn the front wheels, kinda works like a universal joint. I found one for about $125 dollars, haven't had the pleasure of changing it out yet. I heard that it wasn't to bad, just time consuming and having some patients, LOL. It should be safe while in 2 wheel drive, but I would change it as soon as I could, it could start vibrating and cause the front differential to sprain some leaks, or hurt other things in your front differential. It isn't vibrating while you are in 2 wheel drive going down the road is it?
Could this CV joint thing cause any sorta wheel alignment issues??
No its not vibrating in 2wd when i am driving.. however 4x4 yes!
94duallyman 05-07-2005, 11:56 PM I'm not sure about the alignment issues, but I would try to stay away from using 4x4 as much as possible until you get it replaced.
Well I took a look at my truck today and the CV joints seem to be fine.. However... i found 2 things..
1) the drivers front tire had a bludge on the tread(think it seperated)
2) the front drive shaft had a LOT of play where it connected together(the spine area)
maybe worn out splines??
Wait! Don't spend any money. All 4X4's except late 90's and newer with autotrak transfer cases have locked differentials in the transfer case. It is completly normal for your truck to stop moving when you turn on hard surface, because your front and rear axle are fighting each other inside your transfer case's differential. Look up ackermans angle on google and you will understand how this works. When you turn all four of your wheels are rolling a different amount and unless you are on a surface that will allow slippage like dirt, gravel, snow there will be binding in your transfer case. This is why the owners manual says not to operate 4WD on hard dry surfaces.
Your splines are only about 1.5mm wide if there was alot of play where the splines are your driveshaft would already be toast, and your 4WD wouldn't operate at all.
In my experience driveshaft splines almost never go bad. U-joints are the weak link of the driveshaft check them out, less than $20 at the Zone.
When your truck is off your 4WD is disengaged, as there is no power going to the locking mechanism on the front axle, this would allow your driveshaft to turn by hand, and could be the play your experiencing.
BTW, where did you find an electronic N/A 94?
bowtie 05-12-2005, 07:52 AM Check the play in the drive "slip joint" by trying to move it up and down. That where those wear at and they do wear out and cold cause the drive shaft to try to bind, but would only be a real problem as it gets real worn.
Replace that tire you found bad and I wold replace ALL 4 at the same time unless they are low miles so you don't get a two different size tires causing you problems.
The seperated tire might cause the vibrating you feel.
the play in my driveshaft that i am exactly talking about is where it connects from the driveshaft and the flange off the transfer case(the splined area). Even when I had 4x4 engaged and I was under the truck i could basically shake it or wiggle it in that area.
But.. if that is not the problem, where do you think it is?.... the U-joints??
would that be the cause of this 'clinking' sound??
..and for my 94 NA I was just looking for a GM diesel for a while and at a good price. Found one at a average price about a hour away from my town, mananged to talk the dealer Way down in price(long story) and pick er up. To me it didn't really matter turbo or not, Just really wanted a diesel.
