Bought a full transgo for my truck and I am wondering if it is worth the money to put in if I don't replace any of the clutches or put a better tq converter in?
Everything inside should be in great shape as it hasn't had a programmer until the last 1500 miles and I haven't been beating on it.

Deep pan, new filters, and fluid are all going in either way.
It is going to cost me about $350 for the work above to get done. Good price?

I want to be safe running the PPE on 3. I really want to turn it up to 4 and just leave it alone. I know about being easy on the 4-5 and 5-4 shifts but the wondering how the first 3 gears will hold up on 4....
I am not going to turn it up any more than that. 4 is the last on my current programmer anyways. Just want around 380-400rwhp.

No pulling, not going to be hitting the strip, just a daily driving towing a max of about 4K during the weekends.

Thanks for the info:)

Are you pulling the trans yourself? How many miles does it have on it now? To do the full kit the trans will have to come out and be partially torn down to gain access to the C1/C2 assembly to pull it apart and install new springs in the C2 and drill a hole and install 2 plugs. Don't see how anybody could do it for $350 and do it right.

I too was thinking about installing a full transgo for my truck and I am wondering if it is worth the money to put in if I don't replace any of the clutches or tq converter? I'm looking for quicker, positive shifting?

At least put as good converter in it if you do this.

Truck has 68K on it.
The labor for putting in the shift kit, deep pan, filter, and fluid will be $350. He is a mechanic buddy of mine that I used to work with that works on my truck when I can't do it.

Like I said I don't want to go crazy with the truck. At least feel good about the tranny holding lever 3 and preferable level 4.

Thanks :)

If you can get all of that done and done right for $350.00 then yes I would say its worth doing. After pulling mine a few times already, I certainly would not even consider doing it again myself for $350.00 pulled/installed... It would make more sense to save a couple more bucks and buy a good converter, even a good used 3 disk would be a huge improvement..

Problem is it more than a few bucks..
Still on the fence on what to do
Maybe not bother and just run level 3 on the PPE and tow on level 2.
I am 100% confident he will do it right. He has worked on quite a few allisons and has rebuild a ton of transmissions.
So 350 is a good price to put that stuff in?

Sounds like a good price to me. Like mike said, u should upgrade the converter. It would be a waste to not upgrade that while you are in there.

find a good used triple loc from ats or something, trust me man, since it will already be out, you mine as well. while an additional 500 bucks does sound like a lot, it will save you some headaches in the long run

Agreed, it saves headaches in the future, and the truck will run like it should. it's not just a durability issue, it's about putting the power to the wheels as well, the truck will be a night and day difference with a good converter.

if the clutches are burnt at all i would at least relpace them with stock ones..when I had my 03 I put the full transgo and new oem clutch packs... They arent that much.

$350 is a great price for that work. I would try and get your monies worth from the guy and put in a converter while your in there.

Thanks guys! Love this forum! Would of just had him put it in if I didn't post this.

I have decided to wait for now and just do the trans service.
I also ordered a leveling kit and guages and going to have him put that stuff in.

Thanks again I will be keeping my eye out for a tq converter and some alto clutches for the right price.:)

Several years back I had Merchant's truck on the dyno. It had a NEW stock converter and Transgo kit. It would not hold the Hot Juice. My opinion is save your money until you can do it right.

Kurtis,

You made the right decision.

weird, because mine held 525rwhp and 1025 torque. That power was used for pulling and daily driver. Guess I was just lucky. But yes, as they said saving your money and getting a suncoast kit would be much better.

Thanks guys!

One other thing...
What about doing the Jr. part of it while the pan is out?

Will it help much? Then just save the rest of the kit when I get better clutches and tq converter?

Thanks

Not really a JR won't do much for a 5 speed. You would need a full transgo kit.
