: Why do our duramaxs not sound like 18 wheelers?
RUNNINHORN 05-06-2005, 11:40 PM I was pulled over tonite on the side of the freeway on a phone call, finished, and had my windows down and absolutely loved the way the 18 wheelers sounded flying by at 70. When they were on it, and on the jake brake, they sound very loud. Why dont our trucks sound the same way? Even straight-piped my truck sounds nothing like those, just wondering..........
partsguy662 05-06-2005, 11:45 PM Well, for one thing, cubic inches...there's no replacement for displacement...Most of the semitruck motors are in the 750-1000 cubic inch area...That's one reason
The other is that a V-8 diesel sounds entirely different from a I-6 diesel...
If you had your eyes closed and heard a duramax go by, straight piped, then a cummins, straight piped, you could pick the two apart easy, without ever seeing the truck that they were in.
RUNNINHORN 05-06-2005, 11:51 PM thanks....so how many CI are our D-max's?
partsguy662 05-06-2005, 11:53 PM 403 (give or take 1 or 2)
RUNNINHORN 05-06-2005, 11:56 PM man, too bad a CAT C15 wouldnt fit in our trucks.......id even take a C7 or C9
WilliamBos 05-07-2005, 01:02 AM A Mercedes MBE 4000, gobs abd gobs of low end torque, lower than CAT or the Cummins, and that deep throuaty rumble!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

rolloffhill 05-07-2005, 01:15 AM I've got a 10 wheeler with a 3176 cat, (which is a little gutless). I straitpiped it so it is pretty loud.:) Load me up with about 40-45k stand on it and she roars, it's great!:ro)
MXdiesel 05-07-2005, 01:59 AM Same here, that sound is an obsession! ):h I absolutly love the turbo whine of the peterbuilts and similar trucks. I want to get my truck to sound as much like a semi as possible. and i would like to mention, JAKE BREAKS ROCK!!
Paul Clancy 05-07-2005, 09:00 AM Buy a dodge. I test drove an 02 cummins and my god it was loud and sounded exactly like a full size tractor (and rode like a farm tractor). Told my brother who owns/ops a new kenworth and he said his nieghbours dodge is far louder than his semi at idle. BTW he was very impressed with my dmax.
CrazyDaze 05-07-2005, 10:42 AM Runninhorn, I agree with you 100%! There is nothing in the world that sounds better than a heavily loaded big-rig hauling about 80K pounds down the highway with straight pipes! Turbo screaming, the low bellow of massive amounts of torque being dispersed out the exhaust!
Before moving to GM, I worked for Caterpillar truck engine in Novi, MI. After any type of heavy repair, we would put the truck on the chassis dyno and give the engine a good test. I would strap the truck down, get her up to temp in direct drive, and really make them scream! WOT is about 1800 rpm on a 3406 Cat. We would be a WOT the whole time unless there was a problem during the test. Then we would drag them down to 800 RPM at WOT and slowly work our way up to WOT again recording all the data at 100 rpm increments. And I will tell you what...there is nothing like the sound of a big I-6 blasting out almost 6000 ft/lbs of torque at 800 rpm while at WOT. It's a very sweet sound!
As for the Jakes...we used to have contests at the shop to see who could get the jakes adjusted so they would make the loudest clap when engaged.
Anyway...I-6's are the whip!!! But I absolutely love my V-8!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rockon.gif
nwpadmax 05-07-2005, 01:13 PM ...and i would like to mention, JAKE BREAKS ROCK!!
Yeah, except the ones at 120 dB that go right by my house at MIDNIGHT. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif
Those suck. The doggone windows rattle. There is one straight-piped Pete tri-axle that is especially bad.....the kind noise ordinances are written for.
There is maybe a 1/2% grade in front of my mouse ending at a stop sign. And they're empty. There is no excuse whatsoever for that.
The Macks have something called a Dynatard (sp?) that's one tenth as loud.

could you fit a Detroit MBE 900 in our trucks?
Diesel Dragon 05-07-2005, 02:34 PM I drive a truck with a C-15 rated at 550hp and 1850ftlb and believe me in the beginning when I first got the truck I liked the sound and noise of the jake but after 9 years it's getting old. If anything I'd like to put better mufflers on to quiet it down even more. The sound may be good while the truck is passing by but sitting in there for 10 hours a day it get's to you after a while.
I'd rather be sitting in my V8 Duramax for 10 hours a day and relax a little more.
converted6.6 05-07-2005, 04:43 PM I believe you on that one. I've got a new Kenworth T-800 coming in July. C-15 Cat 550hp 1850 ft/lbs, fuller 18 spd,16000lb front axle/46000 rears, 52k air susp,double frame, polished wheels, tanks and dual stacks, Black clearcoat paint,leather interior, I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
noreaster 05-07-2005, 05:06 PM some of the best sounding exhaust ive heard have been big diesels on boats. mostly macks, cats, & volvos.
RUNNINHORN 05-07-2005, 05:42 PM wow on boats?
are any of the entry level CAT's or Detroits light enough to swap into our trucks?

It just wouldn't be cost effective, runnin.....
Maybe a 3126 cat would fit....
But, the wiring and such associated with such a swap....yuk
Nothing detroit made (other than the 6.2 or 6.5) would be fiesable..
Although, it sure would be cool to have a 8V71 in the truck!
noreaster 05-07-2005, 06:38 PM in maine they race lobster boats, they cram the biggest motor that they can fit in the boat & modify to the point of having to rebuild after each event. craziest ive seen was 4 turbos on an e9 mack from a big rig racer. ic for each turbo & twin 10 inch stacks.

yea, not many things i do are "cost effective" :ro)
What do you think a 3126 Cat swap would run? $15k?
RUNNINHORN 05-07-2005, 08:30 PM any idea why GM doesnt offer the 7800 Duramax in the HD trucks?
RUNNINHORN 05-07-2005, 08:34 PM any idea how much our Duramax motors weigh dry/wet?
Wolford 05-07-2005, 09:18 PM 7800 is kinda large for a Light duty pick-up.
RUNNINHORN 05-07-2005, 09:28 PM 7800 is kinda large for a Light duty pick-up.
oh really?
RUNNINHORN 05-07-2005, 11:52 PM do you think an extra 400 lbs in the front is do-able? Im seeing the Detroit MBE 900 and the Cat C7 are both about 400 lb's heavier than our duramax's. Just contemplating a swap later down the road..........

once i get married though in November, i think all this "playing" will come to a halt:(
WilliamBos 05-08-2005, 01:19 AM I dubbo about the MBE 900, But The Mercedes MBE4000 is a monster, and I love the deep throaty rumble!! My Dad's 05 Freightliner has one!! I love it!!
If I had a money tree, I would put one in a 2500HD, and have another stockHD (D/A, and D/ZF-6. )
Take care
Will

the 4000 is a beast, bad ass, but still 800 lbs heavier than the 900, and dont think our front end could support a 1 ton motor:(

Truer words have never been spoken.....unless you're like BMDMAX and get a wife with a serious need for speed http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Git-R-Done now.....when you get married it can be like an act of congress to get your truck all pimped out....

great choice and great choice in shipping!:D When are you going to be installing it? Id like to see it if possible when you either install it all, or get it all done. Let me know, maybe i can run up the road one weekend and take a gander at it.......
rolloffhill 05-08-2005, 11:33 AM I gotta get a pyro probe from banks, then I will do the install. Probably going to be about 2 weeks before I can get it installed.:( He wanted to make sure I got the right one, so he said wait till you have it in your hands. Oh well I guess I'll have to wait a little. But I have waited this long.:D
