: The Death of a Duramax
super72chevy 06-27-2009, 11:39 AM So the other day i was on my way home from work, going through a little one horse town. I rolled into the throttle a little heavier than normal bringing it up to 65. All of a sudden POP loudest sound i've ever heard my truck make, ok check engine comes on, i pop it in neutral and shut it down because white smoke starts pouring out the tail pipe.
After I shut the key off it proceeded to start running away, pouring white smoke out the tail pipe clouding out a 2 lane highway completely. I start franticly running around. Weather it was the right thing or the wrong thing to do I unplugged the ecm. Needless to say it kept going. Its source of fuel was motor oil and it was pouring it out the tail pipe.
While my truck is running away WI's finest state patrol shows up thinking there is a forest fire, because I have 2.5 miles of the highway completely smoked out.
After my truck fineally shut down i do a walk around on my truck, raw engine oil is on the ground right by the tail pipe, I crawl under my truck and there is oil running out of some where. My first thought was F*** my block is toast. Nope, its running out of the intercooler pipe on the drivers side of the truck. Without tearing my motor apart I think my turbo is TOAST.......
Any input would be appreciated.
super72chevy 06-27-2009, 11:49 AM It started just fine after being filled back up with oil, with the quadzilla hooked up on the diagnostic side. Truck was running perfect for the most part, burning all the oil out of the exhaust from the previous altercation it had. Running smooth strong all that, pop the throttle just enough to change rpms. maybe got to 900rpm and then random injectors start shutting down and the motor dies. Doesnt leak oil out of the intercooler pipe while the motor is running, turn the motor off and it starts pouring out. The motor has good oil pressure when it is running.
scramHD 06-27-2009, 11:52 AM Holy Crap..........
Has any one worked on it lately?
super72chevy 06-27-2009, 12:28 PM I just changed the fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, and changed oil. But that is all un realated.
mannytranny 06-27-2009, 12:51 PM Did you dump all of the oil out of the intercooler and associated piping?
super72chevy 06-27-2009, 12:55 PM That is my first plan of action today, but im almost positive its going to dump more oil into the intercooler and piping again if i dont find what seal it blew out or if the turbo is completely hatched.
dozerboy 06-27-2009, 06:40 PM The turbo most likely. If that ever happens again block off the intake that the only way to shut a runaway down.

Unrelated however curious. Have you ever tried to kill a runaway dozer? My dad tried once with a phone book and it ate it right up and kept on running.

I've heard of people trying sweatshirts and things and just making it worse..I mean by all means do what you can but, keep your fingers out of that tube! From what I hear it turns into an INDUSTRIAL vaccum...

That's funny you guys mentioned this, like you were reading my mind:rolleyes: Seriously though is the vice grip method the best way???
LovetheDirtyMax 06-27-2009, 07:48 PM What would cause something like that to happen? The increased boost?
Jasondt2001 06-27-2009, 07:52 PM Turbo's use engine oil to help aid in cooling and provide lubrication; when seals go bad they can DUMP engine oil into the cylinders... with diesel having such high compression it CAN burn straight motor oil...
Then it becomes a run away... the oil is burnt in cylinder and as the motor is still 'running' so is the turbo...sucking oil into the engine.
it causes a HIGH RPM 'runaway' - there's not much you can do to stop it except starve it for air.
Black 5 06-28-2009, 04:01 PM Are there any warning signs for this happening to the turbo?
jbrown1132 06-28-2009, 04:09 PM  never thought of that happening. that would really suck!

if the seals go out of the turbocharger gradually it would burn oil before it went completely bad
if i were you id yank the turbo off and pull it apart, ill bet you be able to fine a riped/torn/failed seal somewhere inside
WHTDMAX06 06-28-2009, 05:27 PM if you get lucky like a story my father told me about one of the guys at work that just did work on the governor on an old mechanically injected deere motor and I guess that was not the problem and it ran away on him. Well he decided to stuff his sweatshirt in the intake and it got sucked in and clogged/stopped the turbo from spinning and shut it down. Needless to say he needed a new sweatshirt and a new turbo.
super72chevy 06-28-2009, 10:25 PM problem found, compressor shaft in the turbo broke in half. The oil was getting pushed through the turbo to the intake side of the motor causing it to run away. I am looking at purchasing the garrett 3788r turbo, all around it seems like it would be the best option to prevent this from happening again. Also I think it would work well with the set up i am running.
DMAX_MXR 06-28-2009, 10:28 PM It should but I hear they Bark easily when you throw some fuel at them, fleece or danville mod the turbo to fix this problem iirc and I think they go for like $2800 but dont quote me on that.

I had the same thing happen to my truck.

Horsehaulin 06-29-2009, 07:06 AM Glad to hear you found the problem and that it is not a major one. Yes this is a salty damage, but one that can be fixed!
Mark (http://www.danvilleperformance.com/) and his crew will take care of you, they make a few tweaks to the turbo and ship your way fast! Good guys to work with.
