: Smoked a Duramax, Duramax blew up.
nebuniram 05-06-2005, 04:41 PM Friend of mine wouldnt stop braggin about his 2003 duramax and how it was so fast and how he would blow my doors off anytime. Well guess u can say he finaly got to me so we lined up. I got about 2 truck lenghts on him when I looked in my mirror and saw him belching smoke from his tailpipe http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/wtf.gif at which point he stopped and pulled over to the side ....... I stopped and came over and we opened up his hood and saw oil/diesel coming out of the bottom of the truck, checked the dipstick and it was way over full and smelled of diesel. Looks like Injectors gave out on him http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/Throwup.gif ........ He didnt want to drive the truck home in fears of ruining the engine so I had to tow him home with a tow strap..............Dodge towin a Chevy http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif ....... Truck is currently at the dealer.......FWIW Both trucks were 4wd launches and both were stock trucks except for mine has 315 tires. Mine is a 2004.5 dodge ram 2500 auto.

Tell me another.

McRat 05-06-2005, 05:50 PM Don't get too excited just yet. Your injectors are made by the same company using the same design. :D
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 05-06-2005, 05:53 PM Well, goes to show you it takes a failed injector to let a ram win... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
If you call that a "win", http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/stirthepot.gifmore power to you.

True, but they are not fully identical as you cannot take an Injector from a D-max and swap it with a Cummins, but even so the failure rate is significantly less on the cummins.......not saying it wont happen to me....., just wanted to tell what happened as you all do when the shoe is on the other foot. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

There is one thing that the HPCR Ram Fails in.
'Full Authority Injection Monitoring'
DC Cannot test injector balance rates...... so when do you guys know you have a problem?
Delphi/GM can see them in real time.
Wait... just wait..

You are right, BUT it is not as if DC does not have any way of testing injectors, they have what is called an "Injector Kill test" in where one can shut off eachinjector individually and therfore eliminate by process of elimination. Its not as if you are monitoring your balance rates daily on your Duramax or maybe you are due to expected failures):h , usually you hear a knock or you have excessive smoke or your "Crankcase is filling with fuel" , all of these symptoms can be troubleshot with the Injector kill test.

Yes, and when they do that, DC comes back with "everything is within spec"
4 of my Dodge buddies over at the Bombers have injector woes on their HPCRs
and they are all 'within spec'
1 friend redid all 6 injectors, problem solved. 3 others have mysterious EGT's/ Oil Dilution/ and or poor perf/mpg.
So.
There we go.
Personally i could care less what monitor was there... the technology is just too darn expensive!Censored

GM's are pretty trick. Most the cars/trucks they monitor crankshaft acceleration rate in realtime and determine how much torque each cylinder fires with. They can isolate individual misfires for troubleshooting, or more importantly, balance the injectors for optimum economy and emissions regardless of mfr'g tolerance variations between cylinders.
One thing Chevy has spent their money on is computer engine management. Nobody else has caught up yet.

I guess they knew something we didn't?

Not according to the poll on TDR a few months ago...:Nothing_f
ockgator 05-10-2005, 12:13 AM Imagine that, a chevy pushing a dodge with a strap
Fis Teck 05-13-2005, 11:53 PM Time will tell what the cummuns injectors will do. The duramax has two or three years of useage more then the Dodge does. In that time { 2 OR 3 YEARS } we will see if they are better or the same.
