I feel pretty stupid but I just wanted to pass on a little bit of info that might save some of you a little pain and suffering. I had a gooseneck hitch installed yesterday and it could only be installed in one place which is about 3 to 4 inches in front of the axle. At first I thought that was great but when I was backing up and almost to a jack knife position I heard a loud pop. It was my rear window. I have an extended tongue on the 5ver so I didn't think it would be problem. I was wrong. So, if anyone is thinking of getting one of these hitches be aware! They are probably fine in a long bed, at least with the extended tongue.:o:

 There are easier ways to get the rear window slide open...grin. :joke:

Sorry to hear that, though. I just picked up my travel trailer from storage last night for our first outing with the new truck. I'm certain I'm going to forget something stupid and tear the hell out of my truck or trailer... Hope not.

Sorry to here that but you are not the first to of done that. I don't understand why it could not be mounted where it was suppose to be. I have a Draw-Tite in my EXT Cab SB and it went just as directions said. I also have the quick slide so I can slide it back 10" as well if needed. I checked mine real close and I don't think I would of had to have the quick slide but I feel better with it.

i use a gooseneck adapter on my fifth, it has a 5 " offset. also, with an extended kingpin I can back at 80* and the fifthwheel is not close to the cab. i researched and tested all of this before any regular towing..............

i dont want to have to get out to manually operate the slide, or take a chance and forget it either. I also willnot spend $2000 on an auto slider when my $500 solution works perfectly. i take the rig offroad as well, and have great articulation. my buddy has since switched after following me into elk country and said his hitch sounded like it wanted to rip out of the truck with only minor terrain undulation.

Otis,

what kind of adapter and hitch are you using, any offset ? My B&W turnover ball only goes one place, and no problems. sorry to hear about your luck. look into Pop Up industries, at the RV1 adapter and worry no more

your hitch is supose to be a couple of inches infront of your axle. it is set there to distribute the weight more properly.

I have to watch my gooseneck while backing up. I'm suprised they didn't warn you. I can go ~70-80deg. with my horse trailer, and have had no issues with it. I just have to remember to watch it.. :^)

Mine is a "draw-tite remove-a-ball", it's mounting rails are under bed, installed into pre-exsisting holes in the frame. It places the ball just in front of the rear axle (~4")

Thanks for the sympathy guys. It is a Colibert and mounts the same as 02B12S said his draw-tite does. It will work for me just fine, I just have to remember to watch it.

You can also have an "extended" extended tongue built.
