I'm not sure if this is the right category to start this thread, but if not, then someone will surely let me know.

Has anyone ever replaced the sound absorbing insulation on the firewall without pulling the engine. If so, how much difficulty did you have? Mine is in poor shape. However, both my front fenders have the new stuff on them and it's MUCH thicker material - very nice, except I'm not sure I like the idea of not having the plastic backing anymore.

Thanks,
SnowDrift

I took it out of the '94 and it only got slightly louder. I'd consider putting it back, if it didn't cost a fortune.

ive been wanting to do the same thing, mine is britle and falls apart. i checked on the same pieces for my fender while i had them apart, and they were over $100 per fender for the insulation....too much for me! i would hate to see the cost of the firewall to replace it.

This is something I would be interested to know. I bought my (new to me) '91 2500 not more than a month ago. It had been sitting since 2001, and apparently a racoon had decided to make a nest on top of the engine. Besides the coon poop EVERYWHERE...it's material of choice for the nest was the readily available insulation material. Tore the hell out of it. I've taken it to the car wash twice, and now as luck would have it I'm replacing the head gaskets. I'm still finding insulation, and poop everywhere. The valley of the engine was 2" thick in the stuff. I think if I wind up having to pull the engine someday, I'm going to spray the whole of everything under the hood with rubber bed coating.

isn't that stuff just for absorbing chemicals?

My buddy used this paste crap that he painted the inside of his car with. It came in a 5 gallon bucket and you just brush it on with a normal paint brush. I don't remember the name of the stuff, but I will ask and see if I can get a web site. It's supposed to work really well on sound and thermal insulation. Stay tuned......
