I have an 04.5 Silverado (see sig) with 22,000 miles, and I am interested in getting the same truck, but in a crew cab so I don't get pressured into offing my truck when we decide to have kids. I went to the dealer today to see what they could find and to get a trade in value on my current truck.

Those cross-eyed crooks told me that 24,000 is the best they could do. He went on to explain that this is traditionally a bad time of the year to try to trade in a truck (couldn't explain himslef though).

NADA values my truck at 34,000 private party/30,000 trade in.
Kelly Blue Book values it at 32,000 private party/ 29,000 trade in.

Am I crazy for expecting something in the 28-29k range?

Anyone want to buy a truck?

nope, make the dealer, salespuke, pull it up online and print it out. that way you tell them exactly what you want. my dealer does it for me here, but i have purchased 6 vehicles from him over the past 10 years. they gave me exactly what kbb and edmunds said the trade in value was worth. the owner was cool as i have known him for many years. the salesman was new.

Never pay more than 1 or 2 hundred over invoice and never trade for less than blue book.

My 2 cents

I will never trade-in a vehilce. Why do so when you can put the profits into your new rig  . Most dealers will get you either on ther trade in or new purchase - they got make some dough.

Hell, you must have the same truck as me, cause my trade in is 28.5k and I can't sell it for that! 19k miles! I had one real good bite, but when he took it home, his wife said she would not drive anything without leather! And brought it back begging for me to take it back--it was only a day--and I know him! I'm a nice guy. It is a buyer market dude.

I have the same truck(extended cab) even the color and paid $32k new in May 2004. Really could not see paying $28k for a year old truck when I could get a new one for $4k more? Maybe thats just me. Blue book of $34k no way and I wouldn't pay out $30K to sell it for that either. Buyers market.

By the way why not wait until the kids are born before worrying about there needing doors that open the other way?

Bad time to sell now. Trucks are plentiful, you can pick and choose what you want, and still get a screamin deal, brand new.

Why not let them work the numbers and see what the bottom line is.....then work with the price of the new one from there?

I work at a used boat dealership so its kinda the same thing with boats. You will hardly ever get "blue book" or "NADA" value. Buyers just dont pay that for boats or trucks when they can get a new fresh boat or truck for only a few grand more. I paid 34k for my brand new 05 crew cab, why would I buy your truck which is only an ext cab and used for 30k? When I got rid of my 02 Sierra ext cab KBB told me average trade in was 15k and retail was 18k, but I only got 12k on my trade in.

The sales manager at my dealership is a friend of a friend. Long story short no sales @$ck the sales manager opened the big black book and got out the invoice. The sticker for the truck I wanted was 48900.00 invoice was around 43,000.00. I fliped through the book a little when they went accross the parking lot to appraise my 00' 1500 with 150,000 mi. on it. Anyway mark up on a $38,000.00 truck was about $4k. Good luck and Remember IF YOU DON'T SEE THE SALES MANAGER YOU DIDN'T GET A GOOD DEAL!:ro)

Shop it around at other car dealers and get bids. Usually a "used car lot" specializing in newer top quality trucks will give you the best price.

Depending on state law, the trade-in price is deducted from the new vehicle sales price to lower the sales tax calculation.

Here is how to get the lower sales tax. Negotiate with your GM dealer to get the best sales price on the new vehicle. Next, get the best bid price on your old truck from any car dealer, usually a truck specialty store.

Get both of the dealers to agree to the following: Trade the old vehicle in to the GM dealer at the bid price, then have the GM dealer immediately wholesale the old vehicle to the used car dealer at the bid price. This way you get the sales tax advantage, the best possible price on the new vehicle, and the best possible price on the old vehicle. The new car dealer is happy to do this because it will make it possible for him to sell a new unit and not cost him any more than if you paid 100% of the sales price of the new vehicle with cash. The used car dealer is happy to do this because he gets a nice truck in inventory for the same price if he brought it direct from you. It does not cost either of them any money. It is a win, win, win for all three of you. I have done this a couple of times.

man oh man... thats low... I just traded my 2003 1500HD crew LT with 36 on the clock... got 23K in trade.

Here is the fine print...

MSRP 2005 Xcab LLY/Allison LS pkg 41500
Vendor/supplier disc. 5600
purchaes price 35900
trade in allowance -23000
taxable goods 12900xstate tax=13803

Now as someone started to mention.... when trading, the savings in tax are an additional benifit, its a state law that influences customers to trade it in and avoid the hassle of retailing it. in my case, I saved 1610 in taxes from buying it outright

Im in the car business, not in sales, but Im always in the managers' tower where the real numbers are flying a round... kinda like a fly on the wall:cool:

Ive come to realize, and some think this is ridiculous, that if you know its a good deal, take it and leave the extra 3-400 or 500 or whatever little left there may be to the dealer. A good dealer will always welcome you in and be genuinely helpful when you need service and ultimately another vehcile. On the other hand, if you beat every last nickel out of them, they will never forget it. My deal as illistrated above, wasnt the best deal on the planet, I probably left 1000 dollars on the table but it was a laydown. I told them what I wanted, they gave me a trade price, and purchase priice and i was like :grd: ... because of this I feel like Im welcomed when I go into the store, not like "there goes that mother f&^*(()^% "which is said more often than anyone might think....this positive attitude goes a looonng way.

When I bought my 2004.5 I really didn't need the truck. I had a 1/2 ton that was getting the job done. So I went in with the attitude of, I really don't need the truck. They told me they were going to give me $9,500 for my trade in, a 2000 1500 RC LB 5.3 with 40,000 miles. Truck was in excellent condition and had new tires to boot. When the sales man told me how much they wanted to give me for my truck I stood up, told him have a nice day, and started to walk out of the dealership. :D I thought the salesman was going to have a stroke.
He called the sales manager over, and he straightened everything out. Ended up getting $13,500 for the trade in, and some other goodies for the DMax. :muahaha:

Maybe for dodge but the dmax isn't sitting on a lot of lots and they only give $1000-1500 rebate.
They where up over $4500 on rebates last summer, so the demand is up.

Haggling for the new truck price isn't an issue, my wife works at GM.

I will visit some other dealerships to see what they have to say. What gets me the most is that I have bought 2 trucks from them in the past 20 months. And now they don't want to do jack for me. Unfortunately my dealer no longer works there so now I'm dealing with some kid. I really don't want to go through the song and dance of selling it private party, I just don't want to roll negative equity into a new truck.

give me more info on the truck...reg cab? ext cab? 2 wd? long/short bed? i'll tell you exactly what that truck is work..i work for a finance company and I have the kelley blue book here. Keep inmind a dealer will always give you wholesale and not retail...and will never give you what the kelley blue book shows cuz they always take like 1500 for dealer prep to resale the vehicle.

Trade in values are VERY subjective. Bottom line, is you have to really compare what the dealer is giving you for what he is selling another truck. I don't care if he is giving me $1 for my trade in, if he is knocking $20,000 off the purchase price of the other rig...there is a lot of difference on "invoice" pricing between different dealers. All I care about is which one has the best final price (then I compare that to what I EXPECT to pay invoice for on a new truck, minus what I could outright sell my vehicle for).
