: I need some quick help form guys running with cranked torsion bars
tgeisick23 05-05-2005, 05:22 PM Does anyone here run with their torsion bars cranked all the way up? If you do, when in 4-wheel drive does your pickup pull excessively to the right, but drive normal in 2-wheel drive?
For some reason my pickup is acting really funny in 4-wheel drive. First off it has a vibration that is noticable through the floor boards, and then when I step on it to accellerate the steering wheel vibrates and the truck pulls hard to the right. It actually pulls so hard to the right that the tires squeel and leave black marks on the road. I took it into the dealer cause it seems to be getting worse. First they blame it on my truck being out of alignment, then they say that it is from my torsion bars being cranked up all the way. Said it is "torque steer" and it is normal.
I need some help or advice quick cause this does not seem "normal" to me.
no problems with the cranked torsion bars, and have done aobut a half dozen so far including some green keys. Are your fender heights close driver to pass side ?
cant see how 4x4 and cranked t bars are associated, other than a problem at the CV axles ? how do they look ? torn boot ?
difference in 4 high vs low ? fluids look OK in t-case and diff ? the angle change for the front drive shaft is not enough of a difference cranked to have an impact. Try a different dealership..........
J-HEFF 05-05-2005, 11:24 PM I've got mine cranked all the way, and I've never had any issures running in four wheel drive. It's been very smooth for about 30,000 miles now.

tgeisick23 05-06-2005, 12:21 AM Well now I am confused. I thought that maybe it was because of the center link was moving and allowing the tires to toe in. But if that were the case I would think everyone with cranked t-bars would experience the same conditions I am.
What size of tires are you guys running?
So you guys have noticed no difference in the way your truck behaves in 4-wheel drive before and after you cranked the t-bars?
skinny 05-06-2005, 01:35 AM You might get more help if you put your truck info in your sig. How many miles are on your truck? I had some probs with my truck when I cranked the t-bars, I needed new pitman and idler arms and stablizer. Truck wouldn't stay in alignment.
akdiesel 05-06-2005, 03:31 AM When you cranked the bars up did you have the front end aligned?
I have had a battle with some work that needed to be done with my dealer since my bars are cranked up.
Torque steer may be an issue here.
tgeisick23 05-06-2005, 09:11 AM Yep I had it realigned right when I put my wheels and tires on, and that was when I also cranked the t-bars.
Heres my truck info: 2003 chevy extended cab short box duramax with 21,000 miles. I am runnning 33x12.5x17 tires, rancho shocks, and t-bars cranked all the way up.
I haven't really had any problems with aligning the truck. Seems like it just recenlty started acting funny in 4-wheel drive, because I never noticed it before.
ssduramax 05-06-2005, 09:15 AM one question to add to the mix. when you are running in 4x4, and it is vibrating and making black marks and doing the torque steer, what are you doing with the truck? drag racing, pulling, off roading? need some info...
ChevyHDGert 05-06-2005, 09:37 AM Is it possible to get the alignment back to factory specs with the torsion bars cranked all the way?
Or can they just get it close enough without turning down the bars?
PEVOMAN 05-06-2005, 09:49 AM U can get around 3 inches max...BUT this is beyond front end alignment limits + your factory shocks are over extended. At 5-7 turns you will get 1.5 to 2 inches & you can still have the front end realigned.
btfarm 05-06-2005, 01:27 PM I was told back in 2000 by a guy with alot of experience to never go more than 5 turns up over stock. Don't know for sure how he knew that but I followed his advice for all three I've had since then. '00 2500-3.5 turns 265-75R16, '03 2500HD-3.5 turns 265-75R16, '05 2500HD-5 turns 285-75R16 and no problems...Yet
running 315/70R17, no problems to date and I use 4wd often. did your fluid look OK when replaced, any significant metal shavings ?
tgeisick23 05-06-2005, 01:47 PM one question to add to the mix. when you are running in 4x4, and it is vibrating and making black marks and doing the torque steer, what are you doing with the truck? drag racing, pulling, off roading? need some info...Well it was raining out and I had 4 wheel drive on the first time I noticed it pulling to the right. Then the next day when it was dry I kicked 4-wheel drive in to see why it was doing this. That's when I saw the black marks.
U can get around 3 inches max...BUT this is beyond front end alignment limits + your factory shocks are over extended. At 5-7 turns you will get 1.5 to 2 inches & you can still have the front end realigned. The factory shocks are over extended when you crank the t-bars all the way up. But I put on ranchos and also made a 1" spacer to move the bottom shock mount up. I imagine you can still align the front end cause the place never said anything about having problems aligning it correctly. Plus I have driven about 10,000 miles with them cranked and haven't noticed any odd tire wear and it drove good and straight down the road.
I have done a little research on this and it seems like the condition is caused from the center link moving thus causing the wheels to toe in. This condition is even worse when the t-bars are cranked. So it looks like Super Diesels center link is the only fix for this. That or don't use 4-wheel drive any more.
