: How to get GM Dealer to Replace all 8 injectors
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 02:24 PM Ive come to the conclusion that my injectors are bad, im gettin 13 mpg, 15 when I really try (keep it under 2000 rpm, grandpa accleration, used to get 24+). My engine seems to run hotter than normal. And still seing the blue smoke, only with the banks chip. Talked with Banks Tech and they say that the Six Gun is aggravating my injector problem, which is the reason for smoke. My dealer says everything is fine and suggests geting better fuel from a differnt station. Im goin on a long road trip soon and I dont wanna drive 3k miles with bad injectors, i need to get my dealer to replace them... any ideas, tips on what to say?? Thanks
duramaxedout 05-05-2005, 02:34 PM The stealer needs to put the Tech 2 on your truck and check the injector balance rates. Anything above a 6 is considered bad according to the GM TSB. My opionion anything above 4 should be considered bad. This will give them all the info they need to decide if they are bad and need replacement. How is your oil level, is it high? I thought the TSB calls for replacing all 8, but a lot of people here are saying the stealers aren't doing it that....sounds case specific. Just remember...."he who screams the loudest wins"!
DuraZak 05-05-2005, 02:40 PM You're correct, they just did one of mine that was overfuelling and it was reading 12 during idle conditions under load.
has anybody confirmed that the presence of a chip (Edge/Banks) actually accentuates or causes injector failure? Any tech's care to comment on that?
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 02:58 PM Yeah my oil dipstick has oil on the wire shaft when cold, its way past full.
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 03:26 PM also, my engine makes a really systematic clicking at idle, INJECOTR??
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 03:27 PM has anybody confirmed that the presence of a chip (Edge/Banks) actually accentuates or causes injector failure? Any tech's care to comment on that?
Yeah is this true, i love the exra power but if im gonna be chewin up injectors.. maybe i can live without it, i bought the diesel for reliability
03duraHDmax 05-05-2005, 03:28 PM Make an appointment at a different dealer. When making the appointment tell them it's for a leaking injectors (not poor fuel milage). When you go to drop off the truck and talk to the service writer, tell him that you have a friend who is a tech at a GMC dealer (maybe out of state). Tell the writer that he looked at your truck and said the injectors were bad. He showed me that there is diesel fuel in my oil (which is a quick sign of a leaking injectors). He then plugged in a hand held computer (don't say tech 2, play dumb) and ran a balance test on the injectors and said they were out of spec.. Then explain your milage and smoking problems.
To be safe - I would remove the Banks Six-gun if possible. They may see that and say your SOL.
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 03:37 PM Yeah, ive had it out for almost a month. Should I ditch the intake too?
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 03:40 PM Is the reason that my oil level so high because i have some #2 in my crankcase??
Chevysrus 05-05-2005, 03:43 PM Is the reason that my oil level so high because i have some #2 in my crankcase??
YES YES YES!
03duraHDmax 05-05-2005, 03:56 PM You can confirm #2 in your crankcase by laying your dipstick on a dry paper towel. The #2 will move towards the edge of the oil puddle.. And don't forget your nose. You can probably smell it pretty good.
neverenuf 05-05-2005, 04:00 PM I just told them I had high oil level, loss of power, smoking, oil on ground, oil smells like diesel fuel. They should know just from the description what the problem is. Take you Banks off for sure and probably the intake too. I left the thermowell in the ex. manifold and they didn't say anything. Do a search on injectors....it doesn't seem like the Banks, Edge or others has anything to do with injector related problems. Mine went at 60K miles.
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 08:25 PM I used my predator to take my balance rates
After Driving home and my engine had about 35 min to cool to 185 degrees at idle they were
1) .99mm
2)-1.54
3).21
4)-1.08
5)-1.13
6)-1.94
7)-2.0
8)-1.86
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 08:27 PM Drove it for 15 min to the gas station, and back... plugged predator in
1)6.33
2)-5.38
3)4.26
4)2.21
5)-2
6)6.47
7)-5.14
8)3.47
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 09:04 PM Hey 03HDDuramax, I tried your paper towel trick...
My oil is a grayish color, in the middle of where i set it on the towel its blackish, then it gets lighter as it goes out. Doesnt smell too much like diesel, though. But you can definetly tell. Also, on my dipstick the "oil" goes almost 1/3 of the way to the little sealing ball on the dipstick, about 1.5 in from the little reader on the bottom.
Took a sample of the oil from my brothers 01' Silverado 1500 5.3, the oil has about 2100 miles on it and its still golden brown. Very differnent than mine
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 09:05 PM Actually, after smelling it about 10 times it does kinda smell like diesel.
Victory Red 05-05-2005, 10:11 PM If you're motor was warm on your #1 are out of whack. I had one that was reaching 8 and had all injectors replaced. The engine does need to be at full operating temp when testing rates, also check them in drive(apply parking brake) and at idle in park.
Good luck to you.
johnnydeesduramax 05-05-2005, 10:21 PM took mine in for the same problem and they only replaced the drivers side four, kind of a 1/2 a$$ job if you ask my wife.
JhnZ71 05-05-2005, 11:14 PM for the first set of readings, it was in neutral. The second set it was in drive with the brake pressed
BH in AZ 05-06-2005, 03:08 AM Since you have diesel in the oil, I think it would be best not to drive the truck any more than absolutely necessary. The oil is diluted and that cannot be good for the engine.
As far as changing all eight, there is a TSB from GM posted on this site somewhere stating the requirement for replacing all 8 on a LB7 engine. Maybe another member knows the post and can provide a link.
You may want to consider having oil analysis done just before every oil change. Do this 2 or 3 times after having the injectors replaced. The idea is to look for high metal content resulting from engine damage. If the numbers are high, you will have something to present to GM. Hopefully you caught it in time and everything is ok.
Good luck.
WHO00KNOWS 05-06-2005, 09:24 AM This is something that is covered under warranty correct? I just bought a used 2002 2500hd and am researching stuff i should be looking out for.

dollyo11 05-06-2005, 09:59 PM My turn: 90 miles from home started smoking a little under load, noticed that the car behind me was using windshield wiper and it wasn't raining.. fuel down from 1/2 to 1/4 in 90 miles// oil pressure down to about 20lbs//pulled off freeway and checked what turned out to be the diesel level in crankcase// yes I think I went from if to when on this one// lucky dealer was only 5 miles away from me and he has all parts in stock //75k miles// says it will be done Monday pm// Next!!!
POGIE 05-07-2005, 09:02 AM Put The Truck Back To Stock And Get The Injectors Replaced.
JhnZ71 05-08-2005, 08:53 PM Another question, i have about 4 buddies with LB7's and there engines are about 1/2 as loud as mine like knock... I dont mind it but is it bad. Also, there is a considerable amount of black smoke when i start from a stop...overfueling?? I keep checking my injectors with my Diablo and sometimes there reading all perfect and sometimes there way out of wack.
JhnZ71 05-08-2005, 08:54 PM Can someone show me where that TSB is i want to go to the dealer armed, my apt is on friday.
