In the last week or so...i've started to hear a noise that sounds like tire tread whine(mud grips) on my 02 CC/dmax 4x4, 56,000 miles. Funny thing is i have newer factory 245s on it. I know they don't make to road noise like mud grips do,..so i'm starting to think...wheel bearing,...but which side & or front or back. You can start to hear it at about 25mph ( sometimes worst than others) The pitch seems constant, maybe somewhat higher at higher speeds. Whats the best way to check out my theory?? also how involved is it to replace a bearing(s)?? I have a extended service contract w/a $100 deductable....i may go that route. thanks

Check the axle lube levels.
Jack up each end (put on stands)and grab the top and bottom of front tire and see if u get any movement, on the rear use a pry bar under tire and see if u get any movement up and down.
If the problem is in rear or u need to change the rearend lube take the axles out and see if u detect loose bearings or rough rotation.

My left wheel bearing went out a month ago. No noise, but "shimmy" and a bit of a knock at speed. I jacked up the lower A-arm to check for play, had noticable play top and bottom tugging in and out, also had a nasty, grindy rotation on the jack.

What idle chatter said. guess the left front is prone to failure. mine went a couple of weeks ago. $258 with good buddy discount... 380 something from the dealer.

One suggestion from working at a tire store for six years. Check your tires...they may be cupped up. You will see wavy spots on the tires if its real bad. Place your hand on the tread and move your hands down the tire to check for the cupping.
If this is the case, starting rotating (about every 4k) your tires more frequently and check your shocks. On trucks only the front tires will cup up, not the back tires. On front wheel drive cars, it is the opposite.

That sounds just like what mine did. I got a new one from Eric. Good thing I did cuase it went down hill fast....I'd get it fixed ASAP It's about as hard as changing the inside tire on a dually...

Update...5-13-05 wheel & brake place checked er out & sure nuff the left front is on it's way out. (it's not loose yet though) he also said the right side is a bit noisey. He told me to wait for a while & till it gets a tad worse & maybe the right will go too ...oh did i say that i have an extended warrantee(that everbody said not to mess with) It has a $100 deduct per vist. I 'll try to get both sides at the same time. That will justify paying for at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the incured cost of the warrantee.):h & i've only had it 4 months
