: How does 6.2 to with 6.5 turbo?

I blew head gasket on 98 6.5 turbo.
I'm thinking about replacing the longblock with early to mid 80's 6.2 instead of newer 6.5 for economical reasons.
I know some of you had 6.5 factory turbo setup installed on 6.2 motor.
Does it do okay or did it blew the head real fast?
I also heard it would be ok if the boost is kept around 5 lbs, not so sure though. I have to decide on what engine to look for real soon.
Help me decide!
Thanks,

you will be fine with the 6.2 engine, the banks system that came as an option were limited to about 8 psi.

IF you keep with that as a max you will be fine. The 6.2 has a little higher compression than the 6.5 so cant take as much boost. Also it will start harder.

Other than that everything just bolts up, esp if you already have all the pieces needed. Should be pretty straight forward.

If you have an auto trans, it will be easier to stick with your 98 injection system.

Good luck!!!

Thanks for your input.
I think 6.5 turbo would push about 10 lbs stock?

I also lost the oil pan from 6.5 turbo engine, Do I need to go look for 6.5TD oil pan or just use one from 6.2?

Thanks,

they pans arn't interchangeable. except for the 92-93 6.2, which uses the 6.5 pan. different crank and seal

the banks kit goes up to 9.5 psi boost at full load when you get the 6.2 block just so you dont end up mad down the road pull the pan and check the bearing webs make sure theres no cracks since its turbo'd it will have more stress so if theres cracks cooking down there its about ready to blow apart

oh ya.....dont get an 82.....it has coarse thread injectors and they dont make turbo coarse thread injectors...

83+ and you can screw your 6.5 injectors right in.

you will also be tearing apart the front of the motor to put your serpentine system and updated cooling parts on the 6.2. Its nothing difficult, you just have to swap front engine covers, water pump, coolant crossover, and all the accessories.

Thanks for your inputs guys.
I'll try to stay away from 82.
Is there any place where I can see pictures of damaged bearing webs or broken cranks, so I can see the stress points to check?
I probably won't know exact year or miles on the motor as I'll be junkyarding. Anything else to look for other than the injector thread and the oil pan?

There's a couple of threads in this section with pics of the cracks and broken cranks...... "Death of the 6.2" is one that comes to mind right off.....

if you get the right belts you dont need serpintine belts

i mean if you get the proper sized V-belts a serpintine system isnt nessesary

I think the easiest thing to do is to move everything over from 6.5TD to 6.2, or whatever motor I'll be getting.
I found a 94 6.5TD in a 94 C3500HD at the yard, somebody took off the intake and it's full of water now.

Why on earth would you take off a perfectly good serpentine setup for a crap V-belt setup?????? V-belts suck-period. :o:

I heard about the write-up somebody did on 6.2 in late 90's truck, I've been searching without any luck. Can somebody point me to the post?
Thanks,

I'm sorry for the confusion.
My Truck is a 98 with 6.5 TD. It would be the easiest to use all my original components on incoming 6.2.
Thanks,
