: glow plugs
mississippi 05-05-2005, 07:56 AM i am new here so hi to all. i got a question. i got a new lly 05. starts fine and runs fine. just noticed when engine is cool it takes about 10-12 seconds for the glow plug indicator to go out. ive driven other diesels at work and two friends have duramax's a couple of years old that i have driven and that just seemed like a long time to me for the light to go out. manual says they are fast heat glow plug system. dont seem real fast to me. once the engine is warm the light may flicker for a millisecond but everything seems normal then. any inputs?
aka108 05-05-2005, 08:48 AM Glad to have you aboard. Don't think my glow light has ever been on more that 3 or 4 seconds even on the few 22 degree mornings during the last winter here.
Carson Smith 05-05-2005, 09:43 AM Glow plug module, this seems to be a fairly common failure since my dealer had it in stock.

mississippi 05-05-2005, 01:48 PM ok.....here it is. called two dealerships, one being where i bought the truck, and talked to service. both said it was ok, go figure. anyways, guess i got 3 yrs to try and tear it up. thanks for the input.

I wouldn't settle for anything less than a replacement Glow plug module. :grd:
mississippi 05-06-2005, 09:22 AM 22 seconds on the stopwatch......taking it in monday mornin......
aka108 05-06-2005, 09:47 AM Way too long. Call GM customer service while you are at dealer if you catch a load of baffle-garb.
96vette 05-06-2005, 05:50 PM I agree that is way to long, mine at 0 degrees outside temp this past winter didnt stay on for 3-4 seconds tops, and now its 60-70 degrees about 1 second and during last summer it would just flash or so fast you couldnt see it.
BLUEHERON 05-07-2005, 10:30 PM Same here. Last winter was rough here in the northeast, but my glow plug light NEVER stayed on longer than 2-3 seconds. Also, I didn't use the block heater at all either. Definitely take it back.
mississippi 05-11-2005, 07:54 PM update...........took it in monday. had to wait until monday evening for the engine to cool for them to see the problem. tuesday they ordered a glow plug module.......todays wednesday.......no word!!!!! i REALLY want to drive my new truck!
Wolford 05-11-2005, 08:41 PM keep us posted with what happens
casnmas 05-11-2005, 09:06 PM Welcome Mississipppi, I have had my 05 lly for one month now. The glow plugs are so fast I sometimes forget to even look down and check. One to two seconds at 38 degrees is what I have been experiencing.

mississippi 05-13-2005, 12:59 PM :ro) picked it up from the dealer today.......replaced the glow plug module and gave me no static. worked out for me this time. thanks for all the input.
mississippi 05-23-2005, 04:31 PM update........picked my truck up that friday. saturday morning it still had the same problem with the light stayin on. first thing monday it went back to service again. replaced power control module. no help. they said they finally found a loose ground wire for the glow plug module somewhere somewhere near the module. that was a week ago and it is workin fine now. light might come on long enough to see now.
dieseldavesr 05-23-2005, 10:31 PM they should have caught the bad ground right off the bat, watch out for that service dept.,they are playing the guessing game.enjoy your new truck, have a wonderful spring and summer.:)
lly engines use faster quicker glow plugs

mississippi 05-24-2005, 08:28 PM yeah dave i know what you mean. there are a couple of things that they have done or said that i have made a note of. i am an aircraft mechanic by trade. i dont know diesels well, but i aint stupid around a wrench, i know some bs'in when i hear it. i got my eye on 'em. hopefully i wont need them again. i think the only reason they r/r the glow plug controller the first time is because the tsb said to. i dont think they even really knew if they had fixed it or not, they just assumed they did and didnt check it with the engine cool. it seems to be fine now. light hardly ever comes on and then just for a split second. one thing, i love drivin that truck!!!!!!!!! sweeeeeeeeeeeeettttt
