: Towing Mileage and Vehicle/Trailer Weights
tbyrne 06-18-2009, 01:03 PM I took a little road trip from MA to GA to pick up a car last week and noted my mileage throughout the 2200 mile round trip. The truck is an '07 crew cab, long bed Sierra HD and the trailer is a 32" aluminum car hauler with a V-nose. Cargo was a '67 Mustang convertible and I only had a couple hundred pounds of stuff in there.
Truck weight - 7380
Truck, trailer and car - 16120
I believe the car weighs about 3200lbs so the trailer by itself is about 5300lbs.
On the way down, my mileage ranged from 10.8 - 12.1 MPG. The best leg of the trip was from MA to around Carlise, PA. I went 402 miles on 33.2 gallons. All of this was hand calculated and I filled it to the rim each time. Travel speed was mainly in the 65-70 range. Started going over some hills/mountains in PA. The next 2 stops gave me 10.6 and 10.8. That was going over all of the mountains along route 81. Speed ranged from 65 to 80 at times. Mainly stayed around 73.
Mileage went down after I picked up the car but it still wasn't to bad. That averaged in the 10.5-10.8 range. Sames mountains and everything, just in a different direction. My speed continued in the 65-80 range depending on the area.
I'd usually have Tow Mode on and paddle between 5th and 6th gear. I'd run 5th while climbing and would sometimes forget that I was in the gear for awhile. I'm happy with that. Mods are PPE programmer on Level 2, AFE induction and a turbo back exhaust. Mileage unloaded is usually in the 15/16 MPG range for mixed driving. Higher with all highway.
JIMMMY 06-18-2009, 01:36 PM Let's makes this a thread for posting Towing Mileage and Vehicle/Trailer Weights - Since that is the title of the thread....
Pulling a 5,000 camp trailer my rig averages 13mpg.
DanielT 06-18-2009, 02:37 PM Pulling 8,000# trailer on green motor running 55-62 averaged 13.4
Included 2 6% 3 mile long grades
RINGNEKS 06-18-2009, 02:42 PM My last camping trip two weeks ago I was 7.7 going down and 9.5 coming back, this was hand calculated . I'm roughly towing 11,000-12,000lbs and have 11,000 miles on the truck. Also my speeds on that trip were 90% of the time at 65 mph.
GlockWRX 06-18-2009, 02:52 PM I tow about 12,000-13,500 lbs depending on the load. On flat ground I get around 10-11 mpg. On mountain passes I'll get 8.5-9.5.
Ultramafic 06-18-2009, 06:00 PM Mine ranges between 10.5-12.5 depending on terrain per tank off the DIC. I usually dont bother hand calculating since I still have to put fuel in to keep going...
My trailer weighs in around the 12000lbs mark and is a high profile 5th wheel type. I take it pretty easy 60-65 miles/hour when towing.
All stock and about 11000 miles on truck.

greif03lb7 06-18-2009, 06:09 PM I got 13.2 coming back from minn to ia only 250 miles pulling a 40 foot tandem dual goosneck unloaded that weights 9k. I was very happy o that was cruise set at 70-71 the whole trip all hand calc. My dic said I was getting 19.
05 dmax 06-19-2009, 07:32 AM Cruise @65 mph yields 10.5 mpg pulling to Disney every year. 5er is high profile and tips the scale at 12,700. Truck weighs ~8,600 with family and 90 gals of fuel. Have 40,000 miles on truck.
pwork 06-19-2009, 10:09 AM Towing boat in Sig ~6-7k w/gear and gas averaged 13.1 from Nashville to Knoxville last year w 5k miles on the clock (got 9 the previous year with my 1/2 gasser). Get 11-12 around running town to the lake and back. Highest unloaded was 20 w/o regen, 18.5 w regen.
chinook47 06-19-2009, 11:55 AM GCW is 25K, 5er weighs 16500. Run 65mph, last trip from Olympic Peninsula, WA to Yellowstone, Tetons, Frt Range of Rockies near Colo Springs then I70 to Grand Junction then home (Oly Pen) was 4300 miles at 10.4 mpg. Was 10.7 until Oregon.
Have just over 20K on truck and 2/3 rds have been towing at this weight and mpg has been right about the same. Feels more powerful the more miles on it. Second D/A, first was 03 2500HD, pulled same trlr, about 16K then, had better mpg.
D_R_C 06-19-2009, 03:15 PM My 5th wheel weighs 13.5k, truck solo ave mpg 14.0, I live in the desert 1200' elevation,120 degrees in the shade in the summer.
Towing 8.0 mpg, ave round trip 360 miles from 1200' to 7200' and back, so we have some pretty steady hill climbing to do.
Ave mph 65-70 and never above 5th gear towing,:D "Because I can".
ponch 06-20-2009, 04:06 PM I get between 8.8 - 9.7 towing a 1700lb 5th @ 62mph all Hand calculated
SIK LMM 06-20-2009, 04:27 PM I get around 12 MPG towing my 38' toyhauler (15,000 lb). Before I lost the DPF I was getting only aroun 9 MPG.
jim87vette 06-20-2009, 05:05 PM I just got home from a 1350 mile trip a couple weeks ago, hauling Toy Hauler 5er (13k approx wgt.).Many steep grades on trip drove mostly 55-62.Had 9.9 showing when I got home no hand calc all Dic figures.
Aahhyes68 06-20-2009, 08:25 PM 10.3-10.8 hand calc'd with a 14K/40' 5'er, bone stock.
I want to tune and lose the DPF but there are so many options/variables I'm skeered to pick one :o:.. Kennedy's ECM tune sounds interesting but .
Edwin 06-21-2009, 12:01 AM I have followed mpg posts about towing for 2 years, and of course have my own experience towing a fairly light travel trailer or a 6' x 12' single axle trailer loaded with 2 street motorcycles, or an 18' motorboat on a single axle trailer.
It seems that the real mpg killer is not weight, but wind load. By that I mean the size of the frontal area of whatever you are towing, and also the aerodynamic shape (or lack thereof) of the trailer.
My dual axle travel trailer weighs only about 5000 lbs loaded and watered up, and I get around 10 - 12 mpg pulling it. I see that many folks towing much longer and heavier trailers and 5th wheels get around the same. My travel trailer is shaped with a slant from the bottom to the flat front window, and then a slant up to the roof. This is not a particularly smooth airflow. It is about 10' high by 8' wide. 80 sqft of wind load.
I get about 16-18mpg with the motorcycles which sit below the air stream over the truck cab, and about 16-18mpg with the boat, which has a good aeordynamic shape, but weighs 6000+lbs.
Anyone else seen the correlation between aerodynamic shape and mpg, more than just weight and mpg?
badinblack 06-21-2009, 12:43 AM Headwind makes a huge difference for me. I tow between 12-13k depending on amount of quads being hauled. 38' Flat ground is 8 with a headwind, 9.5 without. Hearing the stories of guys going from 9 to 12 by losing dpf and adding a tow tune really makes me want to do so. But its hard to give up a warranty.....especially when your spouse is out of work due to this chit hole economy.
05 dmax 06-21-2009, 06:32 AM Hearing the stories of guys going from 9 to 12 by losing dpf and adding a tow tune really makes me want to do so.
I pulled the same trailer before and after the DPF on the same 1600 mile round trip. MPG's might have jumped .3-.5 and thats still questionable. I truck is much more fun to drive and seems stronger being able to breath but I can't claim a 3 mpg increase loaded or empty just because the DPF fell off.
lawn king 06-21-2009, 09:35 AM I never checked my milage towing, this trailer/ machine weighs 6000 lbs. I will have to check it out.
Lofti7 06-21-2009, 09:47 AM towing my boat around 8,000 I get around 13-14 i gained around 2mpg by losing the dpf and my egt's are alot lower
WellShooter 06-21-2009, 01:01 PM Anywhere from 8.5 to 12.5 GCW 20,500# depending on elevation change and wind angle. Last week I had a tailwind going and coming so it was 12.5. As any trucker will tell you a quartering or side wind is worse on fuel mileage than straight on.
tim742000 06-21-2009, 01:24 PM I tow a 47' Weekend Warrior toy hauler and when its fully loaded it weighed in at 24732 lbs . my total weight on the set up is 32587 and i get right around 10mpg
badinblack 06-21-2009, 06:37 PM ^^^^^^Jeezus
D_R_C 06-21-2009, 07:46 PM I tow a 47' Weekend Warrior toy hauler and when its fully loaded it weighed in at 24732 lbs . my total weight on the set up is 32587 and i get right around 10mpg
I have never seen a 47' weekend Warrior toy hauler
That would not be a legal length 62' total unless your towing with a Geo tracker.
gvw 24732 gcvw 32587 and 10 mpg.
It would have to have at least 4 axels, 8 tires with E rating for it to be even sold.
Man I want a hit of what your smoking :smoke2:
Sorry, I could not resist this responce.
tim742000 06-22-2009, 07:28 AM i had to order the trailer to add the extra feet and im 64' 7" end to end and the trailer was a lot heavier then i thought it was going to be. i have 20k on the truck and have gone thru 1 set of breaks so far. 3 axles with 21 k worth of tires and it only has about 19.5k on the axles the rest on the pin.
D_R_C 06-22-2009, 04:55 PM In most states and mine 62' is the MAX total combined length.
You might want to check states out you travel in, otherwise someone will be setting on the side of the road with a RED tag plastered on the vehicles.
tim742000 06-22-2009, 07:03 PM california has 65' max. just check today since some jack A*S in a big rig tuned into me and the HWY patrol and i had a nice conversation.
badinblack 06-22-2009, 10:39 PM Post some pics of that beast!
