I'm sorry to announce a shipping delay. First of all let me state that if anyone here objects to what will likely be a week to two delay before I can ship, I will gladly refund your check if you so request.

The reason for this is an on the fly engineering change. Initially I was going to use an push nut(retainer for non threaded rod) that looks like thishttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/96B_94803a027a.gif

I thought this would hold the Clevis in place tight enough to retain it. Problem is that I couldn't get it in stainless. When I went to install the first finished set onto my truck, I took off my prototypes. I began to flex the pieces back and forth. After a few minutes I stressed it enough, it popped off. This made me quite leary of possible problems with these. I immediately called Hoot and had him do the same to his. His stayed on, but I'm still uneasy about using these.

So I decided to replace it with thishttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/ZD4_retainer.png

which is a press on retainer ring for non threaded rods. It will give me a 360 degree clamp action vs the two prongs on the flanged push nut. The Clevis at 3/8" should take an incredible amount of stress, but should something cause your gate to flex the straps too much(not likely but still a possibility), the hats could pop off. This just wasn't acceptable to me, plus the new press ring is available in a stainless material. These should provide the security I(and we) all want and need. The catalog also claims these can be used where a groove(for a C-Clip) or a hole(Cotter Pin) cannot be used, although I have no stress rating for it, my guess is that it's less likely to pop off since it must be pressed on.

Now this isn't as pretty as the flanged cap, I'm also going to add this to complete the finished lookhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/FA7_newnut.gif

This part has a few more flanges for grabbing and is also available in stainless. Not that at this point it will do more than cover the pin end, but I like the more professionally crafted look.

So what all this means is that I need to order some more parts since these weren't in my original plans. I don't expect to receive them until late next week with the Holidays.

This will also have a minimal effect on pricing for the next batch roughly a $1 a set. It's roughly $30+shipping for these two components with enough to make 25 sets(the original caps were $17 with enough to make 50 sets). It's a small price differential, but since I go back to everything in a stainless material I think it's worth it both for safety and for longevity. Obviously for those that already sent me checks, there will be no adjustment on your end. Just one of those things I need to suck up for development costs(if anyone needs 90+push caps I'll let them go cheeeeeep). <IMG onMouseOver="this.style.cursor='hand'" onMouseOut="this.style.cursor=''" alt='Click on image to open in new window' onClick="window.open('smileys/Ermm.gif', 'Image', 'toolbar=0,location=0,status=0,menubar=0,scrollbar s=1,resizable=1');

WHAT? You want to make it BETTER? I don't know about that.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif No problemo, Rick - you are really making efforts "above and beyond the call" on this little "hobby project!" Well although I'm making little money on this, I just hope that when these do finally ship and one of you guys happen to be in my neighborhood to stop by and buy me a beer.

This project went from fun to work in a flash. I don't regret getting myself into(at least not yet). At the least I hope I don't get sued! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif

Maybe a lawyer here could give ya a standard disclaimer like Edge and others have if you go extreme on your program.

CYA----military lingo.

Tony,

While I'm not concentrating on the second run as of yet(because the first ones haven't shipped as of yet http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif), I can honestly say there will be a second run if not a third and so on.

I pretty much expected the responses I've gotten so far, but I hate the fact I'm running behind schedule.

Jake I appreciate the offer but I'm doing the finish work at my employer and once again the liability crapola pops up.

Isn't there a lawyer type somewhere in the anals of these pages that can give a brother a hand??? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

I truly hope this is my last delay on this project. Hopefully these will be worth the wait for everyone.

VR,

I hope I'm in on the second run as well. Any Improvements you make, feel free to pass it on in the price, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say You should not have to take the hit on this. I also commend you on your hard work and efforts to provide us with a high quality product, in what spare time you may have.

Well I never tried to make this a money maker for myself. The only reason I'm even making a few bucks is to pay back myself for the materials I've already vested in. With the initial sets I'll break even if my math is any good, with the futures, well it'll take a lot of these to buy myself an attitude, but maybe a deep tranny pan may be in the future.

I'm still planning on doing some type of pre-ordering with the next batch to try and cover everyone here. While I think these are a nice replacement I don't expect to sell more than 100 sets, and mainly to the hardcore users of their tailgates. So it'll be a short run train, but hey won't we all be cool with shiny tailgate straps on our new trucks??? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Rick,

I'll be in Tomah WI, actually Ft.MCcoy for winter testing on or around the 10th of Jan for three weeks. If that's near you I'll pop for that beer.

Well that's actually around 160 miles away from me, but hey if you're free on weekends, it's a short jaunt to Kennedy's place from where you're going to be.

I could always plan a weekend for a little GTG and hand deliver yours. There's quite a few WI people on this forum now. Maybe a little diesel party. Any weekend in that time is good for me except for the weekend of the 19th(my wedding anniversary).

It looks like my replacement parts will arrive at my doorstep tomorrow. Anyhow, I can't promise to get out all sets this weekend, but with any luck on Friday I'll try to pound out 10-15 sets and start getting these out to you. With the holidays you never quite know what can happen, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed to mail all initial sets out before the end of year and start taking orders for the second round early in January.

Ok, Victory;

What is it you are making? Cost & benefit? Always interested in good stuff for my truck. I assume VR Straps is the name of the product?

BTW, have you designed a good logo for your product so folks can put "VR Straps" on their sign?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Good Luck,

Might be good to revise the name to VR Stainless Tailgate Straps.Edited by: hoot

Hoot,

Nah, too long of a product name, I need something short and catchy. Once I get some sets out and eventually(hopefully) break even on this project, I may have a little contest to have someone come up with the best name for these. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

Anyhow, cost of these currently stands at $47 a set shipped to your doorstep(I'm contemplating rounding up to an even $50 but that probably won't happen) just in case I come across other changes on the fly.

These are stainless steel bars to replace the tailgate catch cable which several people have had break on them. As for benefits, mainly for corrosion resistance which I believe to be the biggest cause of failure of the 'aircraft cable' GM, Dodge and Ford currently use. As for extra strength holding, I cannot nor will not make any claims to additional strength. I don't know the weight capacity of the tailgate rated from GM, so I won't make any claims to capacity of these.

If you scroll up a few msgs you can see what they roughly look like unassemlbed.

On the upside, I got the new hopefully improved pieces today. The new press on retaining ring, and cap. The cap looks more like a button than anything which should look pretty nice. The retainer rings are smaller than expected, but since they grab 360 and aren't load bearing but to keep the gate strap from flexing too much they should fit the bill. I also am sitting on 100 padded mailers that I bought, so I'll have to sell at least an additional 75 setshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif some point down the road.

I'll get as many done as I can Friday/Saturday as time allows and get them in the mail.

VR;

sounds like a good product. After I get my secondary oil and fuel filters ordered this will be next on my list.

Appreciate any feedback on this site from customers once they start using this!!

thanks.

Deadeye,

Believe it or not I'm waiting for some overall feedback as well. So far only Hoot and myself have used these. I was going to make a few personally and send out as sample but stainless steel is quite difficult to work with.

Demand for these has been much higher than I initially expected. I believe these will be quite useful for those that are heavy users of their tailgate, but not much more than a safety net for the occasional user.
