: Predator / Edge Question
LarryJewell 05-04-2005, 02:56 PM Will Running Around Town With Edge On Power Level 3, Low Fuel Boost Level 5 And Stacked With Predator On 65 Hp Hurt A Stock Tranny On The 04 Lly, Also Have Cool Duels, No Cat, Blocker Plate And Finger Stick In Place, And Afe Stage 2 Intake And 33 X 12.50 Super Swamper Tires. Ive Been Running Around Like This For A Couple Of Days And Tranny Temp On Stock Guage Never Gets About 175 And Engine Temp Runs Around 192, And Avg Egt's Around 600 - 750 Unless I Put My Foot In The Pedal. Just Want To Play It Safe, Tranny Upgrade Wont Happen For Another Year Or So. Any Help Would Be Appreciated. If These Settings Are Too Aggressive, What Settings On The Stack Would Be Safe. Also, Since I Put On The Afe Stage 2 Intake, I Cant Blow As Much Black Smoke As Before.........is This Normal.
lakingslayer 05-04-2005, 03:20 PM I wouldn't run the pred over 40hp tune and play with the edge levels. With that said I'd then keep the edge at level 2 or lower with locked shift defueling. Stacking the Edge and Predator doesn't necessarily give you a straight hp + hp addition so it may be safe to push it a little higher with the edge but I wouldn't chance it without any dyno numbers. I wouldn't go over an additional 90hp with a stock tranny especially with larger tires. Just my .02.
Now I've run the Edge on all levels with the 40hp pred tune. I have noticed more slip in 5th gear on the edge display. I have not limped the tranny yet but I know it's just a matter of time.
NCMIC 05-04-2005, 03:23 PM then i wouldn't stack it at this time. someone posted that a safe increase in hp for the tranny for an lly was around 50hp and 80hp for the lb7.
if you start going into the limp mode, then i would back it down until you are ready for the tranny upgrade. people are limping their tranny's at the 85hp level with their predator. i know that the edge has a tranny safe mode, so i hear about, that might protect you for now.
someone else here may be able to help you better with the edge.
Kennedy 05-04-2005, 04:07 PM The Edge on 3 is about it. MAYBE level 4. I'd load the stock tune with the Predator and use just the Juice.
No stacking on stock transmission is the best advice I can give.
LarryJewell 05-04-2005, 04:08 PM I Never Have Limped The Tranny, And Temp Seems Ok, I Havent Really Paid Any Attention To The Attitud Moniter For Transmission Slipping, If The Tranny Isnt Getting Hot, Should It Be Safe?
LarryJewell 05-04-2005, 04:16 PM What Tranny Upgrades Are Recommended For A Stacked Tune, Is It As Simple As Say A Bully Dog Shift Kit, Or Does It Need To Be More Complex?
LarryJewell 05-05-2005, 08:42 AM come on guys, out of 128 hits only 3 give any info!!!!
LarryJewell 05-05-2005, 11:23 AM Still No Advise?
Kappa9012 05-05-2005, 11:36 AM shift kits are not enough to handle stacked programmers. Most on here are running highly modified trannies, which generally include new torque converters, clutch packs, and a few other parts.
dmaxalliTech 05-05-2005, 12:02 PM I have seen a Pred 85 hp hurt a stock trans. Stacking is a no-no in stock trans land.
BD shift kit will be worth less the fluid you drain to put it in as far as effectiveness goes.
Save your money for a trans and play at your own risk until then.
LarryJewell 05-05-2005, 12:51 PM is there any wat to tell if you are hurting the tranny, or does it just sneak up on you, like i said earlier, my tranny temp stays pretty low
NCMIC 05-05-2005, 03:06 PM my take on it is that it sneaks up on you. i don't think it will run hot.
mgmack 05-11-2005, 08:06 PM I run the predator 65 hp tune alone on a stock allison and haven't limped it yet. I have used it in T/H mode and normal mode, 20,000 mi., no problems yet. I raised the top speed to 120 but was wondering how many rpm's can the LLY handle safely?

Others can correct me if I'm wrong but IIRC I read somewhere that the Duramax was developed with an rpm range upto 4,500 or 5,000 rpm safely  . The Allison tranny on the other hand is limited to 5k input. The TCM will not allow anymore than 5K input. My 8.1 gasser w/ Predator I set the rev limit to 5,500 rpm but it would never pass the 5,000 mark. Further research answered my questions about the TCM limiting my engine RPM.

I ran mine for 6 months with the Edge J/A on 5 most of the time with 37" tires and lots of abuse,towing,burn-outs,ect without the slightest problems other than some lazy shifting. Then out of the blue on a trip to Indiana towing my box trailer it limped. It continued to limp more and more often over the next few months until the Suncoast upgrade. So in my opinion it does sneak up on you. Also everyone I've talked to about my truck is amazed my transmision lasted as long as it did considering the circumstances.I would run the J/A in no more than level 3,by it self, until you get a full tranny,Suncoast,ATS,DTT,or have one built with TTS's convertor and parts.
