hey all. first off this is my first diesel. I am no stranger to mechanics but this is throwing me for a loop.
it is a 1997 1500 with the 6.6l.
The truck starts and warms up fine, and off we go. This problem is intermitent.
I will hit a hill, merge on a hwy, or pass a slow car or just put the foot down and I dont have any power. engine hits around 12-1400rpm rattles and pours black smoke ( unburnt fuel I guess?) the check engine light comes on. ( I dont have a code reader)
then it is like it drops a gear, rpm comes up smoke clears and power is back.
any advice helps

sounds like your wastegate , but fill out a diagnostic checklist in the stickies section of the forum and post it up . it saves us throwing ideas at you.
