: ATS vs Suncoast
njduramax 05-03-2005, 10:54 PM Thinking about upgrading the transmission on my truck before getting any goodies. Just thought I would ask for some opinions on one against the other. This might be a stupid question, but what are the ramifications regarding the GM warranty? Thanks in advance for the comments.
Mackin 05-03-2005, 11:03 PM Well
If you alter the stock transmission you are your own warranty other than what the transmission builder offers.
The rest of the drivetrain is dealer specific. Some don't care others are sticklers some wont even know.
Mine thought I had a sixth gear or additional modules (their comment) when the converter locked
Don't ask,don't say policy applies
ratlover 05-04-2005, 10:24 AM Tell us exactly what you want to do with it.
Dont ask dont tell exactly. You could make up some BS about you cooking it towing and talking to some guy saying the stocker sucks and it would happen again so you decided to upgrade. Make yourself sound like a dumb uneducated guy that got fed a line of BS and you fell for it. They will just laugh behind your back while you are getting the last laugh. A SC is a little easier to hide from the dealer but you shouldnt have a problem.
njduramax 05-04-2005, 10:45 AM My intention is to have this truck for a long time. My main goal would be to increase the life of the transmission, more heavy duty. I do plow snow over the winter, and do move skidders and mini-ex machines for a company when they are short on trucks, not a daily occurance, more like 5 or 6 times a month.
I think the worst this that could have happened is finding this forum, I also want to add an edge once the tranny is done, so something that will hold the power of the tuner is something else I am after. I also have a secondary car, but the truck is what I drive most of the time, about 25k miles a year.
Thanks in advance for the comments.

dmaxalliTech 05-04-2005, 12:24 PM Dont let the dealer touch the trans after its done. Dont need them playing with it. Warranty like Mac said is up to you and your installer etc.
As for which one. Do the reading, look at your budget, find some trucks to ride in if possible and decide for yourself IMO.
Both work very well, both can be made better then the standard kit with some of the things that good installers do.
IBDMAX'IN 05-04-2005, 01:48 PM I have my own one sided opinion about which tranny to go with. I would say go with the ATS naturally because I have one and love the way it performs, I would also say go with ATS because it has the co-pilot which you WILL need for it to handle big power.
Now if you really liked suncoast which a lot of people do, then you could just add the co-pilot later. There are a lot of guys here running that combo and it seems to work fine. Just my one sided .02
On edit: Joe Webb with suncoast did let dmaxallitech send me some of BMDMAX's stock c4's to go in my ATS tranny. Says a lot about his personality!!
ratlover 05-04-2005, 01:59 PM Do you have an thought of trying to run 12's in the 1/4 or use a bunch of drugs or otherwise make stupid power or run it at the truck pulls? Or would you be happy with just 100HP over stock and use it as a work truck?
njduramax 05-04-2005, 03:38 PM ratlover - i think you got it best... 100hp over stock and work makes the most sense to me. The real focus for me would be reliability. Work comes first - but it should be able to handle the extra power when called upon. After the tranny is done - i do plan to add an edge w/ attitude for play.
ratlover 05-04-2005, 03:57 PM Dont need a copilot then IMO. Transgo and a good converter from ATS Suncoast or TTS. A suncoast trans would do you fine too IMO. Were are you located jersey I assume? A Transgo dosnt require the clutches to be yanked(trans does have to come down ect.) but it would be a very good idea IMO to look at all the clutchpacks and replace if necissary and at least make sure all the steels and frictions are lined up when you get it back together. By the time you pay someone to go that far though its not much more to go to a stage 3 suncoast though. A good lump of your cost will be in the R&R. If your just going to do a transgo kit and have a local guy do it for you make sure he hass all the clutch packs sitting there in case and if they are fine and send em back if you dont need em. Or you may be able to do it yourself if you have the tools and equipment. Call or PM Mike L, he can get all the parts you need zapped your way and provide on the phone tech if you run into a snag. Or find a good builder in your area or make a road trip.
Edit: Remember its better to have too much than not enough. I plow snow and drive the piss outa my baby. I stated out thinking I might add a juice, then I added a juice and put it on level 1 "WOW! I dont even see my self going over the 90 HP level if that!" Next it was the 125 juice.....now look at me:eek:
pepperidge 05-04-2005, 04:16 PM both can be made better then the standard kit with some of the things that good installers do.
So a good installer will do a better job than having it installed by the Manufacturer?
fill me in please...
cause I was thinking about taking the 3 hour drive to see Joe...( for a SC-V )
What about ATS? can you get it without the ugly purple paint?
