: Head Gasket or Injector Tube ????
TDIBUG 05-03-2005, 09:19 PM She has all the classic signs of a head gasket failure, loss of coolant, pressurized coolant bottle and it tested positive for combustion gasses.-:t
It's a 01 w/120k on it. The only service issues to date were the injectors and they were just replaced about 8 months ago @ 98k miles.
Since it's out of warranty should i just pull the heads and get it over with or try injector tubes?????
I have 12 years GM dealer experience but got out before the 6.6's came out. I have done my time with the 6.5's but they looks like a walk in the park compared to this one.
Oh ya did i mention this isn't even my truck, it's a good friends.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Joe
I hope your luck is better than mine. I had the same symptoms and this is what was discovered.
leeekblad@msn.com 05-03-2005, 10:48 PM Mine had the same symptoms. Injectors went at the same time. 114,000 miles. GM went good on injectors with no problem. After a lot of *****ing they went 50% on a $3900 head gasket job. They pulled the engine to do it. Sent heads to a machine shop for testing. Heads tested good. Replaced both head gaskets, new bolts, etc. Parts are expensive and it's supposedly a ***** of a job. I opted to let them do it in case there is more trouble, I might have a case. Good luck.
TDIBUG 05-04-2005, 12:19 AM eman, ouch. I hope it was under warranty.
If we tear it down and find something like that it will be sitting upside down in the dealership showroom.:badidea:
TDIBUG 05-05-2005, 10:43 AM Anyone out there done there own head gasket job. Looking for a little advice before i jump in.

TDI - you might want to pm dmaxallitech about this (he's in michigan as well)
He's done one or two ;)
dmaxalliTech 05-05-2005, 11:13 AM Yea, been there once or twice or .......
TDIBUG 05-06-2005, 10:27 AM Thanks Partsguy662
I will PM him to see how much beer a job like this will take. :D I knew it was only a matter of time before i was into one of these Isuzu's. I dont have much hair left from the 6.5L day's. If i had a dollar for every injector pump i have changed i would be retired):h Wish me luck
Joe
TDIBUG 05-24-2005, 12:16 AM Finally found time to tear it down:eek: It was the right headgasket, rear cylinder.
The rear cylinder on the left side was about to go.
We also discovered that not all of the injectors had been changed as stated on the dealer invoice. Remember it was in just 8 months ago for a crankcase full of diesel and coolant loss. The ones that had been changed were not the same part number as on the invoice. Acording to the parts department there have been severall changes in update injector part numbers????
He had a little talk with GM Customer service today. They were very interested to see what was removed from the truck.
TDIBUG 05-25-2005, 01:10 AM Got smacked down by GM today:rant: They give us the old you should have taken it to the dealer, how do we know you didn't just switch out those injectors with some old one's you had laying around.
Didn't even bother arguing with them. We just ordered a $600 top end gasket set and are going to :grd: . Screw em. Oh and by the way if you see a black 01 Max for sale in Michigan, dont buy it.:D
Pictures here (http://www.getdieselpower.com/my01dmax_files/headgaskets/)
dmaxalliTech 05-25-2005, 10:28 AM TDI, the part numbers dont mean anything on the injectors. Look at the build dates and the body casting numbers. Those should be inline.
TDIBUG 05-28-2005, 12:11 AM Great pics hoot
Took the heads to the machine shop today to have them checked for straightness. After a quick cleanup they noticed that the heads had rings worn into them from the sealing ring of the head gasket. Most cylinders were not too bad but the rears are pretty deep. Anyone know if they can be milled. Looks like .003 to .004 should take out most of it.(fingers crossed) New bare castings are about $500 each. Anyone check piston to valve clearance on one of these yet??
Thanks Joe
dyindmax 05-31-2005, 06:24 PM TDI,You should have said!
If you see any Dmax for sale on a lot anywhere,
"Don't buy it"

I will be surprised if we don't start seeing more problems with head gaskets.
Still have not found anyone that has info on resurfacing a DMax head.
It looks like we are going to cut them .003 and see what happens:eek: If time permits we will clay it to check piston to valve clearance, shouldn't be a problem.
Joe
dmaxalliTech 06-01-2005, 09:07 AM I wouldnt cut the heads
If there is selectable head gaskets that are required for fit, then any changes in anything will be critical. You will not be able to make up the differnece with the thicker head gasket
TDIBUG 06-05-2005, 12:17 AM Got the heads back today. We are going for it, they were cut .003. The head gasket thickness is a calculation of piston protrusion. The distance from the piston bowl to the head surface will not have changed.
Now we wait on a head gasket set, it's been on backorder for almost 2 weeks. I see a Cummins in this guys future:lol:
