sorry long story.....So I got a notice in the mail a while ago that says my truck is due for emissions testing. I had no idea what to expect because CT hasnt had emissions testing for a long time and they just started it back up.
I went to a local shop that I know pretty well, they said they couldnt do diesels though. I asked "so they just plug in and see if its throwing any codes right?" The guy said yeah thats all they do.
So I thought I was all set. I went to the diesel test place, give the guy the paper work and 20 bucks (I made sure I paid with cash, didnt know if it would help or not though), and he has me sit in the waiting room while they pulled the truck into the big shop. I turned around and looked through the window into the service area and see them backing it up onto a dyno and looking under it.
OH GREAT I thought...well theres your big ole' FAIL right there....
So they put it up on the dyno and strap it down. One guy gets in, starts it up and revs it up through the gears to probly 50mph or so. I see all the mechanics in the shop drop their tools and look up and gather around. I saw a couple of them plug their ears because the whistle was so loud (big metal-building shop so the echo was pretty loud) as the twins spooled up. :D
So the test ends and they drive it out of the shop, the guy comes up to me and Im waiting for the "wtf no cat, no EGR, too much smoke, fix it and come back". I ask if it passed and he said "oh yeah, no problem at all". He asked if the dual exhaust was all the way from the engine back (as we all know, no, its single and then splits into duals, not sure why it would make a difference on the test?) and handed me the paper work and sent me on my way.
I looked at the paper work and it passed with flying colors all the way across the board; as far as the CT DMV is concerned, its as clean as a diesel can possibly be.
Must be pretty high standards if a duramax with no cat, no EGR, big injectors, slightly lower compression, twins, and a tune can pass without even a question.
so, any of you diesel guys in CT, you've got nothing to worry about...just take it in as-is and dont waste your time putting the cat/dpf/whatever back on.
