sorry long story.....So I got a notice in the mail a while ago that says my truck is due for emissions testing. I had no idea what to expect because CT hasnt had emissions testing for a long time and they just started it back up.

I went to a local shop that I know pretty well, they said they couldnt do diesels though. I asked "so they just plug in and see if its throwing any codes right?" The guy said yeah thats all they do.

So I thought I was all set. I went to the diesel test place, give the guy the paper work and 20 bucks (I made sure I paid with cash, didnt know if it would help or not though), and he has me sit in the waiting room while they pulled the truck into the big shop. I turned around and looked through the window into the service area and see them backing it up onto a dyno and looking under it.

OH GREAT I thought...well theres your big ole' FAIL right there....

So they put it up on the dyno and strap it down. One guy gets in, starts it up and revs it up through the gears to probly 50mph or so. I see all the mechanics in the shop drop their tools and look up and gather around. I saw a couple of them plug their ears because the whistle was so loud (big metal-building shop so the echo was pretty loud) as the twins spooled up. :D

So the test ends and they drive it out of the shop, the guy comes up to me and Im waiting for the "wtf no cat, no EGR, too much smoke, fix it and come back". I ask if it passed and he said "oh yeah, no problem at all". He asked if the dual exhaust was all the way from the engine back (as we all know, no, its single and then splits into duals, not sure why it would make a difference on the test?) and handed me the paper work and sent me on my way.

I looked at the paper work and it passed with flying colors all the way across the board; as far as the CT DMV is concerned, its as clean as a diesel can possibly be.

Must be pretty high standards if a duramax with no cat, no EGR, big injectors, slightly lower compression, twins, and a tune can pass without even a question.

so, any of you diesel guys in CT, you've got nothing to worry about...just take it in as-is and dont waste your time putting the cat/dpf/whatever back on.

HA! It's similar here in Nevada. As long as you've got the appearance of pollution gear it doesn't seem to matter how much soot she blows, it's still a pass.

First time I gutted the kitty, restored my truck to stock (with the exception of the Finger stick and egr blocker) and it passed, second time I forgot about it and passed with better numbers than my first go round while running the Predator on 65!

Third time was with EFILive, I debated on tuning for less smoke but decided what the hell and let it fly.. again passed (albeit slightly worse than stock on particulates).

I've gotten over my fascination with the big ole cloud of black love and have a fairly smokeless tune in it now and have no plans to change it for smog this year.

Dura thanks for the report on Ct emissions. I have to go in August and was unsure what to expect. If your truck passed mine should go through with no problems.just curious , where did you bring your truck, if its close I'll head over to there.

I was thinking the same thing. The service manager comes back and asks you If they can push the truck hard because all the guys in back have a pool started. :)

Thanks for the update. I just have the EGR blocked and a predator tune in, but my plan was to give it a shot as-is and just go back if I fail since they give you 3 attempts to pass. Sounds like I should have no problem passing though.

Crazy that passed... I am curious about the emissions testing... We do not have that here.

Who is liable if your truck throws a driveshaft thru the wall or the government sanctioned employee doesnt strap your truck down right?

Can you ask to see the shops insurance policy and refuse the testing if the policy does not cover your vehicle in the event of an short bus shop hand or even due to aftermarket additions to the truck?

Makes me nervous when somebody is obligated by law to turn the keys of their pride n joy over to a government employee (basically)...

Funny thing is that these people aren't "government" employees. CT scrapped it's own emissions programs because the firm sub contracted to do it was so corrupt. Now, the state uses approved service centers. The Firestone shop near me does the tests.

I took my 94 Suburban that hasn't had a tune up since I bought it and has a bad catalytic converter and they failed it......Cause? Faulty gas cap...

I just think its better to have friends that do the testing... No testing just some paperwork filled out and done... This jiffy lube strapped down the d-max to their dyno and they couldn't load it enough it was burning out on their dyno! Haha that was funny.. It is a joke! So easy to get around!

texas has to hook it up to their computer so it can pull your vin now. Before I could just call a buddy and get him to put an inspection sticker in the mail.

CO emissions is the same way, they strap your truck to a dyno and run it through a series of mph changes. What makes me uncomfortable with the shop I go to is that the waiting room is in FRONT of the truck! Only thing that separates the truck from the waiting room is a 2x4 wall....

Costs us $60 a test.
My truck blows less than 1% particulate every year. This year I'm taking it in with some EFI love to see what happens... :D
