Ive seen quite a few pickup trucks around here just blowing black smoke out like crazy, why is this? what have they added? is it safe for the engine and tranny?

not enough air to burn it... if they are blowing black once the turbo [s] are spooled, then the engine is over fueled and will increase EGT...

or just very poorly maintained

Lots of fuel is injected in low boost situations to make the turbo(s) spool up faster and most of it is unburnt diesel hence the black smoke. Any aftermarket power adder besides bigger turbo, exhaust, and intake will make a truck blow more black smoke (fuel plate, injectors, lift pump, etc)

Black smoke is unburned fuel need more air if you have things setup right that

black smoke can be turned into more horse power. What I mean is heavy black is not getting you any more power just wasteing fuel.
