Ive heard that you can hold the wastegate open somehow and have the same effect as a smoke switch. Does anyone know how to come about this and if it would cause any damage to anything?

Vice grips on actuator arm open it by hand and use the vice gips to hold it open

have you ever tried it?

Take your c clip off the arm going through the turbo

I don't think it will work because the mass air wont be seeing enough air to fuel it enough to make it smoke. It might throw a code too

Trucks gonna code no matter what you do... Its gonna throw an under boost code if you undo the waste gate or a MAF code if you unplug it... Unplugging the MAF won't make it smoke because the desired air flow table's will take over and they follow actual air flow. Best way to do it is through tuning. And you don't need a transmission to have smoke. And most of us didn't "blow" our money on mods for our trucks, we save or pennies and do our research so we spend our hard earned money the best way possible.

You got it champ...:rolleyes: Hell I am in the middle east and don't even get to see my truck but 30 days a year if that. I graduated in 04 and worked my ass off to get where I am today. You don't have alot of money? Most guys with EFI will throw a tune in your truck cheap as hell. I do it alot when I am home 100 bucks for the licence and you have your tune. As stated above you don't need a tranny to make smoke. The library at this site has a couple really good smoke tunes. I will be sure not to warn of any ill efects these modifications will do your truck and you or hard earned cash.

Yeah i know how to work hard. I work construction. Im just asking if anyone has ever done it. I really wasnt wanting to break my turbo arm or whatever it is with the vice grips. If i could all I really want is a 4 or 5 position switch with mileage, towing, race, and smoke tunes. Im not really sure where to get that for under 500. But what are you doing over in the middle east? Im thinking about joining the Army and going to sniper school and eventually being a green beret.

Like stated have sombody tune your truck with efi and get a dsp 5 switch you would have around 150 in it I think. Thats what I did Just find sombody with efi and you whould be smokin in no time.

I'm DOD. Find someone to tune your truck it's an LB7 right? So you can get a DSP switch and 5 tunes for under 500 buks easy.

Id say go ahead and use the vice grips :rolleyes:....just make sure to come back here and report your blown turbo after you do it.....search "Juice Grips" and you'll find out why. Look at the oldest threads from 2004 and 2005 first.

If you want to get smoke for cheap just buy an edge juice with attitude off of ebay that will get you started.........

if you want smoke, get a banks bighead wastegate and turn it all the way out so the shaft is really long...this will essentailly hold it open, the guy who put it on my truck before i had it put it in wrong so i was only making like 12 psi of boost, and i didint know, and i put my quad 135 on and is smoked like a BASTARD! didnt even run that bad...but once i got a guage i saw and turned her back up to 30psi, now i have a f'd up tranny...lol.

haha my truck actually died the other day in the middle of a main road during rush hour. I had a clogged fuel filter so i changed that and got on my way. Im going to start changing it everytime i change my oil and oil filter now. how much do banks wastegates run for?

Banks Bighead Wastegate Actuator is about $215 or so. I did the same thing when i first put mine in and it smoked a lot! Re-installed it right and it runs like a champ now ;)

lb7 ran a air line with about 40psi with a switch in it and my truck will smoke the hwy out as long as i want it to!! plus no codes pop up! ran the air line between the ppe valve and the waste gate really dark smoke

haha this thread is funny.......they all are........now dont get me wrong i love smoke......and lots of it........but never ever ever.......lock your waste gate open......that is there for a reason....(overspool + help build boost to keep temps down)......your gonna run real hot.....then your gonna hear a loud bang/pop and your gonna smoke as much a a pro street puller.....only yours will be white haha.......im gonna add a smoke switch to mess with my buddies out at the farm and let them think im pushin 10000000000000+hp....but i would never think about the waste gate idea on a D-Max......i tried it on my old 6.5turbo and it got so hot so fast it wasnt funny.......

i would never do it now that i know the specs on it. the air tank idea is a good one i cant see any huge problem with it.

Can someone explain to me how holding the wastegate open will "pop" the turbo? What actually happens?

it CAN lead to over spooling it....your not actually gonna blow it apart.....but it can snap the shaft or kill the bearings or both........seen it.....
