: Who tows with chip and no other upgrades?
mjohnson97045 05-03-2005, 04:37 PM I just bought a Edge Juice for my LB7 on Ebay for $260. My plan is to get exhaust and make no other mods so I can unplug the module when I take it in for service. I still have several years left on warrenty.
The problem is I will not be able to afford exhaust for at least 6 - 12 months. When I tow I am usually between 17 - 19K GCVWR. Does what can I do to tow in level one and minimize the risk of any damage. I have a buddy who tows at about 20K with a superchips in level one. He pulls 20 minute mountain passes with his foot on the floor and so far no problems. I have read that superchips makes more heat than the edge so I am hoping I will be ok.
Thanks in advance
moakster 05-03-2005, 04:50 PM Dont know about the Edge Juice as I run a Predator but most of the programmers and chips say it is safe to tow in the lower HP programs. I tow in the 40 HP tune which is close to the Edge level 2 I believe. Have had no issues with the 40 tune and pull a 8K travel trailer around the country during the camping season. Up to the mountains and hauling#$@ across the desert to California nver a problem.
The only other mod I would recommend, which is free, is the swiss cheesed air box.
On my LB7 I can run level 2 with no major EGT problems hauling heavy loads, I do have guages on the A pillar. I would be careful just keeping your foot into it on real long grads though. I wouldn't run that way even if it was just stock.
blnagel 05-03-2005, 10:01 PM I tow my 5er on the level 5 at most times. If my EGTs temps raise I drop it down.

dieselfumes57 05-04-2005, 12:22 AM damn! you outbid me!
dieselfumes57 05-04-2005, 12:23 AM oh and level 2 should be ok with that weight

I'm really surprised that you can tow in level 5! I'm not talking about the tranny since you have the same setup I run, I'm talking about exhaust temps. I can hit 1200° with my Predator in the top tune empty just pulling interstate hills between Whitehall and Billings! I think the Predators generally run really hot though.
What have you done to your exhaust specifically?
Hired Gun 05-04-2005, 08:22 AM I tow around 20,000 to 30,000 3 to 5 times a week during different seasons, and I run level 2 with no problems.

You calling me a liar! :D

I just pay attention to my EGTs and if they get @ 1250, I drop it down and the tempsdrop safely. The only thing I have done with the exhaust is remove the muffler.

coyotekid 05-04-2005, 04:21 PM Good to know--and I really wasn't insinuating that you were a liar!:D
I'm gonna have to try the Juice/Attitude combo, that's all there is to it.
neverenuf 05-04-2005, 04:46 PM I run the Banks in level 2 with my rig. Temps will reach 12oo on the big hills, but no higher. I have a K&N filter and factory exhaust.
I use Juice level 2 on hills and sometimes level 3 on interstates or highways with no hills. I have my pyro post turbo so when the temps get near 1000 I back off. Usually holds around 900 degrees while pulling hills. I did not install the attitude as the juice is easily removed before taking to the dealer. Guages are a must for towing IMHO. I still have stock exhaust as my mechanic told me that if you put a banks monster exhaust next to the stock Duramax they are almost identical with the banks being 1/2" bigger in diameter. I may change the muffler at some point but the stock exhaust has not dampened my trucks performance.
BlueDMax 05-05-2005, 12:54 PM "...put a banks monster exhaust next to the stock Duramax they are almost identical with the banks being 1/2" bigger in diameter"
Yes, but a 1/2 inch IS significant. It results in a 30% increase in cross-sectional area. Granted the stock muffler adds a lot of resistance as it is baffled and has some 2 inch diameter paths.
Mitchagain 05-05-2005, 01:12 PM Used to tow with stock exhaust at level 2 and depending on the hill my EGTs could climb through the roof. Keep the speed down and the gears lower and you won't have a problem. Would not go higher than Level 2 for towing though. If you can't afford an exhaust mod, you'll hate the price of an Allison!
Tsckey 05-05-2005, 01:21 PM If you’re mechanically inclined or have friendly connections to a muffler shop, you can install a straight-through 4" muffler and get most of the benefits of a full exhaust system for a fraction of the cost. I tow at very nearly the same weight as you with my Juice on lvl 1 and have been pleased with the EGTs, which are slightly lower than before installing the module (I don’t have the Attitude either). But, I do have a pyrometer, which I would not be comfortable towing without, even in stock tune, since in the summer with the A/C on at high altitude EGTs can climb into the red zone.

Frank Blum 05-06-2005, 11:56 PM I towed 11K miles with my 10K 5th wheel in tow on level 2. On the long big hills in OD it would occasional go into the red if I didn't go down to 4th. If you are towing without gauges with a chip you are asking for a problem. Later! Frank
