: Is All This Electronic Stuff Really Any Better?

i keep hearing stories of electronic injection pumps costing in the thousands to fix/replace, etc and i wonder if they are really any better? I just recently bought a fully rebuilt IP for my 6.5 n/a for $250 and couldn't help but think i would never buy any of this new electonic stuff, it would cost too much. I have also heard many stories of duramax engines lasting no where near as long as 6.2/6.5, although i am not an expert that's just what i have read.
I see all these fancy trucks driving around, they must be like $50,000 to buy and i wonder if they are going to be on the road when they have 300,000 miles on them?
I bought my step van for $2500 with a practically new 6.5 engine and it has only 100,000 miles on the rest of it - and i have heard of at least some of these same rigs (former postal trucks) getting 500,000 miles on them, sometimes with the original 6.2 engine.
I guess what i am wondering is if these new, high tech turbo diesel with electronic everything even compare to the older ones? Not only did i get a great deal, but fuel costs me nothing since i run B100 in the main tank, which i make myself, and SVO in a second tank which is heated and has severeal heat exchangers in the line to keep the veggie oil hot before it hits the IP. It is not as easy to do this with the newer diesel engines, so i have heard.
Anyway, i would like to hear some opinions on this matter, just out of curiosity. thanks!

I'm running ~30% yellow grease in with pump fuel and I've found if the oil gets dark enough it will throw optical codes like 18, ect but 30% mix is light enough that I've already done ~3000 miles on this mix and I love the smell of my exhaust. I feel like I'm leaving a trail of breathable vapors instead of toxic death.
The DS-4 is a pain sometimes but not unmannageable. I paid $23 for a 5521 core that looks like it was replaced solely to fix the PMD, seller said it stalled, tried the PMD on my truck and verified the driver was spazzing out. It's my backup pump now.

Wanna know somethin' that will make you really start prayin? :uhoh2:I took my kids in a fire house last year, and one of the trucks were drive by wire for the accelerator. . . Whattya do when Engine 4 is sittin' there, with the guys ready to respond and someone's gotta get out their code reader because the Service Engine light is on.:drop_mout

Just what we need, right? Limp mode to the scene, whoppie!

The DS4 pump is much more reliable than the reputation it has earned due to early mfg problems. It won't outlast your DB2, but its not nearly as troublesome as some make it seem.
