: Engaing Electronic 4X4
ap_coach 06-08-2009, 11:20 AM When I click 4hi I have a loud cluncking sound. I read that this is due to the driveshaft needing to be greased. Is there anything else I should check while I am down there. I might wait a few weeks and prevent the pump rub problem while at it.
lizzard 06-08-2009, 11:55 PM It's probably just your servo on the front third member engaging the axles-----mine does the same thing . What you worry about is when you don't hear that noise:D
ap_coach 06-09-2009, 08:24 AM So it's normal for there to be a loud clunk when it engages?
Tolliwacker 06-09-2009, 06:54 PM How fast are you going when you engage?
ap_coach 06-09-2009, 10:50 PM 5-10 MPH. Owners Manual says you can be going up to 55 MPH and engage though I don't.
greif03lb7 06-09-2009, 10:52 PM Mine did this and the forks in the transfercase where bad and I ended up putting a new one in because the cost to fix was not to much diff.
Tolliwacker 06-09-2009, 11:13 PM If you are accelerating, the drivetrain is under a load. Sure the manual says you can engage at the speeds indicated, but if you lift off the go pedal when you do, it makes for a smoother shift. Give it a try and see if it helps.
I never shift when under power, or a load on the drivetrain, but I have not been in any situation where I had to.

ap_coach 06-10-2009, 08:32 AM Will try on my way to work this morning.....thanks guys
ap_coach 06-10-2009, 10:19 AM going about 10 MPH, let off pedal so no load, LOUD CLUNK. Might be time to pull it out and take it apart.
Will be a few weeks but we shall see. Might do the pump rub issue fix while I have it out.
Tolliwacker 06-10-2009, 07:54 PM If you have it out, and fdo not do a pump rub fix, you are wasting a great opportunity, order the Riverside Gear plate or M/A's Pump housing, then pull the case and check it out.
tidbit080 06-12-2009, 08:01 PM Ok I was just talking to Tolli about my truck. The grease on the driveline pertains to, say you are at a red light and when you release the brake to take off there is kind of a clunk and thump (this being in 2wd) then the driveline needs greased. mine used to do the same thing. I dropped driveline and thoroughly greased the splines inside driveline where it slides into transfer case and problem solved. Dont htink it is gonna help your 4wd clunk however I just tore mine down cause I also had a loud clunk when engaging 4hi. I found the mode range fork (the big one ) damn near destroyed and my inner, middle and outer mode syncros where very worn. This will definitely cause the clunking. Also check the mode slider for wear, mine was ok. I definitely agree with Tolli on the pump rub issue. Mine showed just a little wear from the clip but I installed the riverside rub plate for 65 bucks and no more worries. The mode range fork was hard to find but found mine at Inland Truck Parts in omaha, NE for 50 bucks lol. Total for everyhting was under 200. Best of luck and hope this helps! Thanks for all your advice Tolli:)
ap_coach 06-13-2009, 12:51 PM Alright guys...tidbit sounds like he narrowed down my problem. I will be checking into this shortly. THanks guys..
tidbit...how long of a job was it?
tidbit080 06-14-2009, 10:23 AM Took me about 45 min to pull the case and about an hour to tear down and inspect everything. Not bad at all it is pretty straight foward
