If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the 4-71, 6-71, and 8-71 Roots style supercharger developed for big diesels like the "over the road" diesel rigs or something?
Has anyone thought of trying one on the Duramax?
Would it work?
I'm sure that it would be very expensive, but would it be an alternative just for somthing different?

If I remember correctly, they were actually exhaust extractors on large diesel engines. Inovative hot-rodders modified them for use as superchargers for gas engines.

They are for Detroit Diesels which use a two stroke design. They push in air at BDC so it replaces the exhaust and you get a power stroke every rev. Kinda like what 2-stroke gas motors do with the crankcase (use it as an air pump to flush out the cylinder).
The 6-71 happened to be just the right size for Chevy V8's, and they were cheap.
BTW, the 6-71 means it's for a Detroit Diesel with 6 cylinders, 71 cubic inches each.
They are not particularly efficient since they were not designed for pressure increase...just low-ratio. Modern screw-type compressors are much more efficient and are used for air compression in commercial compressors.
Thanks.
I knew that they were made for the diesel, but wasen't sure what for.
Thanks again,
