: replaced injection pump, now what?
Cen-Taur 06-08-2009, 06:52 AM I just put a rebuilt injection pump in my truck and now it won't start. It's a K3500 diesel, 95.
How long does it take of cranking to get it to prime up and fire? Can I use starting fluid on it? All the diesel starting fluids I've looked at say do not use with glow plugs. My mechanic said try removing the top piece of the intake to expose the plenum and spray WD40 in there to start it but that had no effect.
What can I do?
Thanks in advance! :-)

Whatever you do, do NOT use starting fluid !!! Did you install the new IP in the same position as the old IP ?
.
Remember, patience is a virtue. Turn the engine over, let the starter cool down and repeat. After a while, your batteries may need a recharge. Make sure the ignition key is off when hooking up or disconnecting the charger.
.
JMJNet 06-08-2009, 09:29 AM It will take a lot of cranking. NO starting fluid aka ether. So you need two good fully charged battery. Make sure there is no air before the IP. You have to push all the air out before crank will happen. Also make sure your LP and OPS are good to supply fuel to the IP.
pgguru 06-08-2009, 10:56 AM Just in case you did not know you have to Loosen the Metal Fuel Lines from the Pump to each Injector one at a time and turn the motor over until you get fuel. Air in the lines will just keep compressing and the injectors will never pop.
94C1500 06-08-2009, 10:06 PM The injectors will pop from pressure whether its air or fuel and bleed the air even without cracking the lines. More than likely you dont have anything leaving the IP.
Why did you change the IP? Did you get new PMD too? What is the LP pressure? during crank the LP is powered by the LP relay and triggered by IGN switch, so OPS is not a player yet. can you put truck in gear and turn key to START, does LP run?
Do you have a scanner to set the timing, did you put it in the same position or at least as close to vertical as possible?
Cen-Taur 06-14-2009, 05:48 PM I replaced the pump because I was having issues and after trying to replace the Accelerator Position Sensor (pedal assembly) and the PMD, still having the same problems, my mechanic said it was the IP, and apparently it threw some code about the IP being bad as well (he says) so I replaced that.
I put the pump as 'level' as I could.
I'll check the LP but the truck ran before I tore it apart so I don't suspect there's any issue there.
94C1500 06-15-2009, 12:02 AM Check the codes yourself, all you need is a paperclip.
Dont trust mechanics diagnosis.
Bison 06-15-2009, 12:32 AM Pull the Ip inlet hose, and prime LP till fuel at the IP.Hook inlet back up and loosen all injector lines you can get to,crank engine till fuel appears at the injectors(if not, check for power at the fuel shutoff solenoid, and make sure it works)tighten line nuts. The engine should fire in a couple of seconds cranking.if not, than the IP is way outta time.
You have no need for startfluid at all right now.If you're not knowledgable with its use, dont use it.
What where/are the codes, before and after IP replacement?
Your mechanic dont seem to do you no good.
Cen-Taur 06-15-2009, 12:49 PM Hah, I went out and cranked on it a bit more (20 seconds, then 90 seconds off, then 20 seconds then 90 seconds off) on the second 20 seconds of cranking I could see some smoke 'oozing' out of the exhaust and could smell diesel soot so I knew we were getting SOME fuel into the chambers and it was getting toasted by the glow plugs, then on the third time I cranked on it, about 10 seconds it fired up and ran smoothly. best of all, when I revved it it didn't stick at 2K RPM or rev uncontrolably. hoorah! I fixed it!
Now I'm doing a full brake job and installing air suspension and we'll be rollin on.
Thanks for everyone's knowledge and pointers!

JMJNet 06-15-2009, 01:15 PM Glad it is fixed. I know it takes lots and lots of cranking since the oil pressure has not built up yet either.
