I pull the edge and then program with the PPE and then put the Edge back on.

i let my buddy use my PPE one day....ran it on level 5 and turned the edge up to level 5......limped the trans in about 20 minutes...not a good idea

I had my Diablo Sport stacked with my Edge and limped the trans.

You can do it but your probably gonna limp the trans.

what if i have a build transmission?

Then do it up! But I wouldn't be on it all the time because there is so much timing in both tunes and could cause a blown motor. But it is doable.

I was going to say something about timing as soon as the built trans came up

This is my first diesel with an automatic tranny and it's probably a dumb question, but what do ya'll mean by "limp the trans?"

You limp your Allison,
:( when you dont have a built up tranny, stock tranny will only handle a additonal 100 HP max! Limp mode is when the tranny computer senses to much power and torque and tells the engine to power down.

and the clutches start to get burnt

Ok, so what do you do to, I guess, reset the tranny when this happens. I'm all stock but about to put the PPE on it and plan on running the 90hp setting. Just wanna know what to do if it does happen.

Hey, to all of you that have experienced a "limp". Can you tell us what if any DTC's were tripped?

yes....the check engine light will come on and there will be a P700? code....I know there's a P and 7 something in there. To reset it get a scanner and clear the code. When you limp it you will be stuck in 3rd gear but will also have reverse. Turn the truck off and back on and you have all the gears again but still have to clear the code. Every time you limp it, it becomes easier and easier to limp again.

Thanks for the help. At least I'll not be surprised, lol.

You can clear it with the PPE. I limped mine once, you just have to get out of the throttle a little when shifting from 4th to 5th.:D

I guess I don't understand why we are stacking programers on these trucks? PPE Hot +2 will take you as high as your motors enternals can go. EFI LIVE will take you far past that point of enternal failure. With the money that is being spent on 2 programmers you could get EFI. The timing you will be pushin with stacked programers will not be safe in the least.

On the "Allison can only handle 100HP stock Max" is off. It is recomended that you don't exceed that number if you don't plan on doin a trans build. Mine has held up to some bigass tunes, for 2 years since it was new. But then again I am waitin tell failure to build the Alli up.

^^^makes a good point about stacking

It goes into limp mode when it detects slippage in the clutch packs. When in limp mode, it will only shift up to 3rd gear and will defuel.

After reading all of these posts, no one has said in so few words.... That a transmission only limps when it detects a set percentage of difference between the input rpms and the output rpms thats when it goes into a limp mode. The factory's objective is to save the transmission from burning itself up with slipping clutches (when you couldn't possibly have felt the slipping). The Problem is that if you have limped it once, chances are you will limp it again, sooner than later. The limp is a result of a worn transmission not a good gauge as a place to stop turning up the power. Once you have limped it, the damage has already been done. Dont get greedy and you should be able to drive the stock trans a good long time.
