I as I mentioned in proir post my 6.5 is completly stock. I bought the truck to replace my 99' 5.7 gasser. I pull 11,000 boat in Las Vegas in 110 degree temps over the mountains. From what I have been reading, I need to make some major changes to keep this baby alive. Better exhaust, Improve my intake, Improve transmission cooling. These seem to be the the biggies. What am I missing?

gauges! mountains and 6.5L's mean high egt's.
Considering how dry it is there, possibly water injection, look at what Heath sells.

All of the above and take the upper part of your fan shroud off and make sure you don't have leaves or other debris between the rad and the a/c coil. If you do, I've been able to vac it out by just unbolting the upper rad mounts and leaning the rad back a little. You don't list a year but if it has the single thermostat setup you could upgrade to the dual with H.O. water pump. '95 and older came with single Tstat, '96 could be either way, and '97 came with the dual Tstat.

All the '95 and up here in Canada have dual TStats for some reason....

....Oh? How come all the ones out here have the duals then?
We got a '95 in the shop right now with duals?

I found that adding a cowl induction hood really helped out both of my rigs while towing in the mountains. The raised cowl allows alot of heat to escape instead of being sealed in like the factory setup.

I put header heat wrap around the downpipe when I installed new exhaust and have noticed a considerable drop in temp underhood during the summer.
