My buddy has a 01 cummins that he has to crank on a long time before it will start. It starts fine when its cold though. It just had a new aftermarket injector pump put on a month ago and this is when the trouble started. He needs to know what is wrong soon because he has to go on a long trip and doesnt want to get stranded. thanks for any help

Was the lift pump replaced, pressure needs to be checked from it going to the pump. New inj. pump could be screwed up also.

Might better yank that aftermarket pump and put an OEM pump back in it.

^^^ what he said .
Make sure the lift pump is working by a fuel perssure test and the filter is clean. But Ive allways had to replace the injection pump with that issue.
Usually casued by lift pump failure. Dodge DONT like not having been fed fuel to the injection pumps

That is funny because my 99 Do_g_ excriment was.... I ran around for about 10 months without the lift pump working it only put out 135 rwhp but that didn't tell the re&res at the dollarshop anything. My injectors were peeing out of two at 2600 psi so been there......

Check that when you bump the starter that the lift pump runs for about 25 sec.
Check fuel pressure should be about 15 psi a mechanical gauge tee ed into the top of fuel filter will work well.
If it is an 01 cycle the key( but dont' start) 3 times and code/s will come up.
I think that there is a check valve just before the vp44 this could be bad?
If not check for loose fuel connections ( some where is pulling in air, or check alllll of the flaired connections maybe some dirt or material stopping it from sealing?)
Cross threaded fitting on the vp? or if o-ring twisted ( I forget now) not in place?
