i was wondering if anyone has had any axle problems with bearings or gears because at my work over the past 3 months we have rebuilt axles on aprox 8 new trucks ranging from 100-10000mi on them from the 04-05 model year and 6 of them were duramax's
one of our techs called gm on one of the duramax's with a frt axle failure and they told him they are common because the frt axle is to weak to support the truck in reverse because of the power of the engine
also if you could specify if you have a duelly or a single rear wheel
thanks

Makes ya wonder if GM is considering a SFA then if they are having problems. I haven't had any problems on my HD,but I have the 6.0 gas to.

hubs are a very common problem of gm the hubs on a buick rendwzvous last about 20k mi and seem to go in pairs they are even on backorder from gm
however on the trucks i am talking more about inner axle bearings and the gears

1 rear axle seal only. i voted for a rear problem. didn't know you were looking for bigger issues... maybe disregard my vote. seal not a biggie.

sorry i double checked i was off on the # of axles we did we have had 3 d/a possably a fourth i can't recall i overexagerated a bit
1 frt axle d/a replaced all the bearings and gears
2 rear axles which we replaced the bearings and one we replaced an axle houseing because one of the ends broke off
in addition to these we have done atleast 1frt and 3rear axle rebuilds for bearings or gears on gas trucks
one of the frt axle jobs was so badly worn the truck wouldn't move when in 4wheel drive
most of the trucks that have required overhaul have been for noises in the axle which i have to admit is hard to notice in a duramax between the engine noise and the trany wine
also polar bear sorry to disapoint you but i'd like to keep my place of work to myself

I am posting the response for my dad's 02 DA single rear wheel. Had a carrier bearing go bad at 37000 miles! He found it just in time, tore it down and found one roller had gone bad, rest looked good, but the bearing started spinning on the carrier. Removed bearing and knurled carrier for a snug press fit, replaced all of the bearings, filled up with redline 80/140 synthetic. Also found a chunk missing on one of the rear disc pads at same time.:(
I had to replace the rear axle housing on my 02. They claimed I was hauling to much wait, which I hope is not the case I just trippled the pin weight on the truck. It happened at about 45K miles and they covered it under warranty. It was only noticed due to a rear axle seal leaking.
I was disapointed at the time.
