: Pyrometer - How Hard to Install?
escholten 05-01-2005, 11:25 AM Need some help determining the difficulty of installation for a Pyrometer. I think I get the inside setup, plan on mounting the gauge in a pillar mount. What about the connection to the exhaust what is involved there? Also has anyone used the second mounting spot for a pressure gauge for some Firestone Ride-Rites?
Thanks in advance
noreaster 05-01-2005, 11:43 AM did u look in the do it yourself section? if not check it out, just make sure you get a good tap & not a cheapie
shuffman 05-01-2005, 11:50 AM I have BD-Powers X-Monitor that gives me both pyro and boost in a pillar mounted digital display. The pyro is post turbo mounted and seems to work just fine as I add 300' to get my manifold temp. I was a little leary tapping into the manifold incase any filings accidentally found their way to my turbo. Hope this helps.................SWH...

TheBac 05-01-2005, 02:07 PM Look up "Hoot Method". Proven to work.....http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=892&highlight=Hoot+Method
Idle_Chatter 05-01-2005, 02:47 PM Pyrometer installation is no big deal. There are some excellent "how to" articles already mentioned I have installed pyros in both of my exhaust manifolds now. The cast iron material is very easy to drill at slow speed, makes small chips, using a dab of grease and running the engine makes it nearly impossible to get any significant debris into the manifold, and you are on the *exhaust* side of the turbo which is very stout, has relatively large clearances and deals with extreme heat and carbon during its entire service. Do be cautious in the use of the NPT pipe tap, as the material you are tapping is thin and you DO NOT want to "overtap" with the tapered tap and make it impossible for your threaded bushing to seal without running out of threads.
Brad97 05-01-2005, 03:05 PM 1. take off the passenger side inside fender well cover. It is mounted with plastic snap fittings. It will then give you clear view of the exhaust manifold.
2. Determine the correct size drill and tap for the probe you are going to install.
3. With the engine idleing to create a positive pressure to blow the chips out, slowly drill the hole in the rear portion of the manifold.
4. With wheel bearing grease lathered over your tap to catch the thred shavings and even with the engine idleing tap out the hole to install the probe.
5. Screw in the probe, run the wires and you're ready to read the temp.
Good luck,
Brad
McRat 05-01-2005, 03:09 PM For those worried about chips damaging the turbo...
It is thin (.125") soft cast iron. The exhaust turbine (and vanes on the LLY) are Inconel. You could probably dump all the chips into the manifold without doing any harm. Keep in mind that thin iron chips are actually flammable. They will burn up, and are much, much softer than the turbo parts.
kbstinky 05-01-2005, 07:45 PM Bottom line is, if I can do it, anybody can do it.
So get your tools and get with it.
The hardest part is taking the fender liner off.
Good luck
craneman 05-02-2005, 05:30 AM Anyone have pictures of going thru the firewall into the cab?

MrsSpoolin 05-02-2005, 03:22 PM You mean the wires?
craneman 05-04-2005, 11:16 AM Yes. What are the different penatration points people are using to run the wires and etc to the cab.

here is a pic of mine, look for the yellow wire.

Searay90 05-04-2005, 01:49 PM Try this link and look under the posts I made. Shows the intall I did on two trucks, including where we ran the wires thru the fire wall.

dmax4u2nv 05-04-2005, 04:42 PM anyone know the size of the tap and drill bit for the banks? thanks.
coyotekid 05-04-2005, 04:45 PM I installed my first one via the "Hoot" method, and if I can do it, ANYBODY CAN! I had some great help from a friend, but it's just not that hard. Trust me, me with a wrench is about like it would have been giving Ghandi a shotgun. Yes, I'm that handy.
I did three last Saturday in about 1/2 hour.
